The band sounds so dynamic and quick on its feet on this recording. It goes without saying that the songwriting is great. Could have been of Dylan's best if he'd have finished it.
The most complex and sophisticated of the Blonde on Blonde sessions. The band is on fire!!!!! Should have finished it and put it on the record or maybe this is a preview of the directions Dylan might’ve gone in, the song has several songs within it. Sheer genius!

He changed this song to SOONER OR LATER ONE OF US MUST KNOW. This was recorded in December of 1965 in New York. Sooner or later was recorded in Nashville in February 1966.
This is possibly a heresy, but I think the breakdown halfway through the last verse is somehow the only thing that could happen. The previous verses each build to their own point of extreme tension and are then partially resolved at the end of the verse. The 4th verse starts with even more tension building as it progresses. Everything up to this point has registered 10 on the genius scale, the band "hanging on by a golden thread" as Timothy Ryan's comment has it, but the remaining lyrics (as we have them in the 'rehearsal'version of the song) just do not, in my opinion, quite match the quality of what has gone before. Possibly Dylan was trying to re-work them as he sang - something only he could do! - and found the right words just would not come at the moment they were required. So he stopped. And then abandoned the song as he had done the best he could with it. What we have remains one of his masterpieces.
best comment regarding this take - but if you listen at the end dylan seems distracted by something and the band have begun to slow before he messes the lyric
@@fredfat3128 I've just listened again and I think you have to remember that the other musicians are having to follow Dylan's lead - when he falters they do as well.
