Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
Every step of the way we walk the line
Your days are numbered, so are mine
Time is piling’ up, we struggle and we scrape
We’re all boxed in, nowhere to escape
[Verse 2]
City’s just a jungle; more games to play
Trapped in the heart of it, trying' to get away
I was raised in the country, I been working’ in the town
I been in trouble ever since I set my suitcase down
[Verse 3]
Got nothing' for you, I had nothing' before
Don’t even have anything for myself anymore
Sky full of fire, pain pouring’ down
Nothing you can sell me, I’ll see you around
[Verse 4]
All my powers of expression and thoughts so sublime
Could never do you justice in reason or rhyme
Only one thing I did wrong
Stayed in Mississippi a day too long
[Verse 5]
Well, the devil’s in the alley, mule’s in the stall
Say anything you wanna, I have heard it all
I was thinking’ 'bout the things that Rosie said
I was dreaming I was sleeping' in Rosie’s bed
[Verse 6]
Walking through the leaves, falling from the trees
Feeling like a stranger nobody sees
So many things that we never will undo
I know you’re sorry, I’m sorry too
[Verse 7]
Some people will offer you their hand and some won’t
Last night I knew you, tonight I don’t
I need something strong to distract my mind
I’m gonna look at you ’til my eyes go blind
[Verse 8]
Well I got here following' the southern star
I crossed that river just to be where you are
Only one thing I did wrong
Stayed in Mississippi a day too long
[Verse 9]
Well my ship’s been split to splinters and it’s sinking' fast
I’m drowning in the poison, got no future, got no past
But my heart is not weary, it’s light and it’s free
I’ve got nothing but affection for all those who’ve sailed with me
[Verse 10]
Everybody moving if they ain’t already there
Everybody got to move somewhere
Stick with me baby, stick with me anyhow
Things should start to get interesting' right about now
[Verse 11]
My clothes are wet, tight on my skin
Not as tight as the corner that I painted myself in
I know that fortune is waiting’ to be kind
So give me your hand and say you’ll be mine
[Verse 12]
Well, the emptiness is endless, cold as the clay
You can always come back, but you can’t come back all the way
Only one thing I did wrong
Stayed in Mississippi a day too long
#BobDylan #Mississippi #LoveAndTheft
You can always come back, but you can’t come back all the way. One of the best lines on ageing ever written.
Everyday ,I wake up in the heart of this giant gift shop ...this song is... so true ..boxed in here ...
This might be his most brilliant song.. Which is saying something.
I can't believe I've gone this long without hearing this amazing song. Imagine having a song this good, NOT make the original album! Dylan is a singular wordsmith among us mortals.
This song is a straight masterpiece.
Ye man good wording doode
And his ragged lived it voice makes it all so real and touching.
If I ever go to Mississipi it will only be for a day and pray that it's not a day too long.🎉🎉🎉🎉
Dylan is the most accurate prophet to make music about life.
I hear ya brother
HEAR HERE!!!
I think Leonard Cohen came the closest to Bob in that department, even matched him with his best songs. Dylan's sheer volume of quality output is utterly beyond compare, however.
So many decades past, and here he comes with another Johannah.
So lucky to have grown up with his music.
The emptiness is endless, cold as the clay. You can always come back, but you can't come back all the way... 😱
This song soothes the soul. It keeps doing it
this song is a pearl he made this masterpiece in full maturity
My favourite bob song. No doubt my most played and something i come back to regularly in my life when i need it. Reflective and comforting in every way no matter how many times ive heard it.
Wpw
Bob Dylan's greatest song
One of many 🤟🏻
Stuck in Mississippi 14 years...
You can make enough to live comfortably... But never enough to actually escape! True story😳😁
Pure poetry.
How many other artists 40 years into their career could crank out a similar masterwork? Nobody.
Van Morrison Chris Rea, Mike Scott, ???
Not even close!
Nobody even comes close to Dylan
Not even Paul McCartney has managed it. I think the only other person who could write stuff this good long into their career was Leonard Cohen.
@@squamish4244 Townes Van Zandt.
Nail on the head ,
My theme song !!! brilliant; Dyln
So glad I can hear this on RUclips. Bob Dylan is arguably the best songwriter of the last century
I don't think there's an argument about it. Guy has written like 750 songs, and he's still going. A lot of his throwaways would be masterpieces for most artists, and that's actually been proven over and over! I think Bob Dylan is the best songwriter of all time. One day he might be overtaken, but it's gonna be a long time
@@Official_KC I very much doubt the world will exist long enough for anyone to overtake Bob Dylan...he's unique with a God given talent nobody else will ever possess.
@@Official_KC u are on the money there , nobody will surpass Bob😎
A masterpiece ’.’, my favorite Dylan. ‘All my powers of expression, and thoughts so sublime, could never do you justice, in reason or rhyme.’
That line, coming from Dylan, wow, but anyone can say it, and it will be the truth. Yes, that specific line has nailed my soul since I heard it the first time. Wish I could say or write something as beautiful. And: I'm gonna look at you 'till my eyes go blind. Dylan is a gift, to live his times is precious.
@@mauriciovargas3913and you know it😎😘
What makes the song the best for me is the tight rhythm section. Just the bass line alone is worth the price of admission for me.
I listen to it whenever im lost just to get back on track.
This song + Where Are You Tonight + Tangled Up In Blue + It's Alright Ma.. + Carribean Wind + Brownsville Girl etc.. etc.. (Bob entered my world in 1983. All these years later I'm not sure if I am living out parts of his songs or if he has a direct line to my life and is fretting it into his creative magic). What I actually think is that he is super sensitive and highly intelligent. You can't write songs like this without an unparalleled capacity for compassion and insight into the trials of your fellow man.
if youre into elston punch in bob dylan 370 songs
You know what, I think it's my favorite Dylan song. At least in my top 3. Masterpiece.
BOB DYLAN 🎼➖from morning to evening 🎧🎶VERY EASY WITH YOU 💜💜💜
Its so relatable. Im in another state of mind, every time I hear this song. An artist for everyone and all times.
Love Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum. That’s what made me pick up the album. Sounds like something he would have done with the Traveling Wilburys. 😊🎸🎶
My favorite song he has released this century. In the top 10 or so of all his songs. It's so poetic and sad.
20 years! One of my favorite Dylan albums and songs!
Wonderful song. Bob gets better and wiser with each passing year.
'Stick with me baby, stick with me anyhow. Things will start to get interesting right about now' - prophetic lyrics for an album released on 9/11/2001.
This fellow Bob Dylan is very good
The most perfect song ever, not even an exaggeration, can listen at any time and feel and think something new and I don't even speak about music like that, this is just perfect
And there are 2 alternate versions from this song that are just as amazing than this one
Well spoken let the music carry your amaganation. Let your mind drift
Agree - Epic Song
I agree, I feel the same with this song!
@@rich185 True, all versions are great. I somehow prefer 'Unreleased (Alternate) Version #3', though. Do you have a favourite?
What a beautiful an perfect song sung by Dylan.
I have loved this legends music all the 56 years of my life .
I'll go to my grave loving this music.
I just pray his music is played at my funeral
I've (sometimes) hoped I'd die before Bob; I got friends & family that have had serious concerns about his death on my health & well-being for decades...
...maybe he's Methuselah Rivisited.

Hello I really do appreciate you for being a big fan thank you for your wonderful comments on my post it really means a lot to me.I sincerely hope you never stop listening to my music…..❤️❤️❤️
An unusually infectious Dylan Top 5 genius tune conveying the universality of the human condition portrayed with sensitivity, intellect, lyricism and the wisdom of the Bard!
Jesus, he's great.
Being born in a year that makes your life concurrent with Bob is a blessing.

You do have something. Your gifts, and also if you have faith in Jesus, that's all you need.
"You can always come back,
but you can't come back all the way"
A pearl of wisdom for those contemplating the mistakes made in their past. Mississippi is probably Dylan's most poignant song about the wasted years, lost love, loneliness and the inevitable path towards the end. Finally in RUclips! Thank you Bob!
"Sometimes we push toooo far"
Masterpiece
I agree 💯
AMEN.
Great comment!
The GOAT
its hypnotic....the rhythm....the words...thoughts that I recognize without ever having been able to put into words on my own
Indeed the song is like a drug it gets me every time ✌🏻🤟🏻
We bow to you
What is amazing about Dylan is not just the proliferation of material, but how a a song can be very different depending on what version or take you listen to. Self Portrait changes drastically from a disaster to something deeply intruiging in this way. The guy just has levels and levels in him so far beyond almost any other artist.
"Mississippi" seems to encapsulate the core of the man''s life, an older man's resignation to the themes found in "Stuck Insde of Mobile". "You can always come back, but you can't come back all the way." What a line.
A very great song.
Good tune, right here!
Michael McLoughlin
This song could only be written by Bob Dylan.I think elegant is a good word for it.
Down to earth,elegance & truth.
why is this song so perfect?
This song is full of nuclear lines. For example: "Everybody movin’ if they ain’t already there. Everybody got to move somewhere". I think he means by this sentence that everybody will end (or being there already) up with JAH or satan. Dylan is a believer who uses many times wordplays alluding to Jesus, satan and himself/humanity. This song echos prominently Dylan's Gotta Serve Somebody. Same message same players.
@constantwireless3290 I think it is about fate. Everyone keeps moving endlessly until they reached somewhere that they belong to .
I love the line about "the corner I painted myself in"
I was completely unaware of this one until about five minutes ago. Where have I been???
It's lovely, isn't it. The whole album is good, and the production by Jack Frost (actually Bob himself) is great.
In my mind the final Dylan masterpiece.
The first time I ever heard this song was when it was covered by Sheryl Crow on her 1998 Globe Sessions album.
As a decades long Bobby D listener, I’m ashamed to admit that this is the first time I’m hearing this song sung by him. I never even knew it was written by him. It’s also interesting reading the comments here and learning that he released this album on 9/11/2001 when Sheryl released her album with this song on it a full two years prior. I’m definitely going to have to do a deep dive into the story behind him giving Sheryl first dibs on this song.
The way he sings
“ I have heard it all”
can never be topped.
Bob has
“Well my ship has been split into splinters and it's sinking fast, I'm drowning in the poison got no future, got no past, but my heart it's not weary, it's light and free, I got nothing but affection for those who have sailed with me”
Yes, I know how it feels.

Tungled up in blue, Browsville girl, Mississippi.
The focus is usually (and rightly) on the song and Bob's delivery, but this track shows what he can do with great backing musicians. On this, the bass is the passion and the drums are the excitement.
Incredible song. The drumming is absolutely perfect for the song. This guy knows how to play a song, how to lift and enhance a song. The best compliment anyone can give to a drummer. Pure craftsmanship and skill.
i love you bob
"So many things that we never will undo
I know you're sorry, I'm sorry too".
Thank you for putting this song on youtube, Bob. Grateful for the ability to share it.
Story of my life
Thank You Bob for this song!
The lyrics here are incredible, and Dylan wrote this song 35 years into his career. Not even Paul McCartney has been able to write anything matching his Beatles classics since he went solo. Bob's output has long since hit superhuman status.
Bob was turning 60 when he recorded this masterpiece.
"Things should start to get interesting right about now", couldn't be more right!
Dylan is unique
I love this song so much. . 😍😍😍

What can we say about Bob that no some one else havent say it
“All my powers of expression and thoughts so sublime”
When he sings “sublime” I just can feel the word. I feel what he means, but I dont know if I can explain
if I listen hard to the drums, and read the words at the same time, (thanks to Bryan Keisling), all of the mysteries of the other instruments become clear. The drums are on the bottom of the wondrous pile of sound. This man's two angels are so close to him.
Sublime, just perfect! Thank you Mr. Dylan 🙏
Every time I think Dylan is just below my favorite artists I come across another one of his masterpieces and have to slap myself back into reality...Bob is the GOAT of 21st century American music, thanks for letting us in on the journey.
I read every verse, every one is wonderful. There will never be any need to wonder who is the greatest lyricist in the history of popular music.
I totally agree, Bob has a unique store of incredible poetry, a GENIUS. HE has saved me so many times from feeling down. LIVE FOR EVER BOB.

Beautiful voice baby
Some people will offer their hand , and some won't ,.true enough
Finally found the original version
What a criminally under-rated song on an album which seemed to slip under the radar due to its release being so close to 9/11. For me, whole album is some of Bob's best work this century as he mastered writing songs that are both archaic sounding at times but always timeless, building on the same technique he utilized with Time Out Of Mind ("I was riding in a buggy with miss Mary Jane"), but was probably enabled by the 2 acoustic cover albums of traditional covers he did prior to that. In that sense, he was looping back all the way to say Blowing In The Wind, Hard Rain, or The Times They Are A-Changing - equally of the moment, but timeless. The man is a genius.
Great album..thanks for so much fine music❤️🌟❤️
When the album came out I was together with a girl that was a Jezebel and to make it short》I payed my dues and learned my lessons well,I think I was staying in...too long》Awesome song and album🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
