  • Timex. Originally made in my home state of Connecticut now make some of the coolest watches under $100. The iconic weekender, the Waterbury, the Fairfield, the list goes on! I'm not sure that I can think of another watch maker offering such great timepieces at such a bargain, Timex has the market cornered. No, these won't likely be handed down from generation to generation. However, they look cool, work great, and won't break the bank! Timex rocks.

    Reviews of clothing, boots, and accessories for men, along with style advice and life philosophy. I've been working with my hands for my entire life as a mechanic, tow truck driver, and eventually a licensed electrician. Being a blue collar guy, I look for certain elements in a product: is it durable? Is it high-quality? Will it perform well over its service life? Whether boots, pants, jackets, or tools I believe it's best to buy once and cry once by getting the best you can afford. With so many options these days, choosing the best product can become a difficult decision, but that's where I come in. Helping you stay stylish, rugged, and handsome.
    I don't care where it's made as long as it's made well, and allows you to buy less and buy better.

    I love how loud the tick is on my timex weekender, it reminds me that time doesn’t stop, it doesn’t slow down, it doesn’t care. It’s a reminder to get my ass in gear and put in work. Get after it and take souls along the way as David Goggins would say.

    Really glad to see a RUclipsr push a brand with actual heritage and value over some cheap junk just because they're sponsored.
    Obviously you're not the type that can be bought and that's part of the reason why this channel is so great and stands out when compared to others in the same category.

    I have quite a few Timex watches. My first was when I was eight years old in 1972, a mechanical child’s watch that helped children learn to read the time.
    I now have over forty vintage Timex’s including several prototype watches that came direct from a former employee.
    The new ones are wonderful watches, bullet proof with some fantastic styles.
    As for longevity, well, I wear one made in 1955 that at the time cost nine bucks and almost 64 years later it performs fantastically. Timex were never ever meant to be throw away watches and the new ones for sale now I can see still working in fifty years time with just battery changes.
    Since this video was made they have started to mine their back catalog with some wonderful watches.

    I just got a Timex SSQ Quartz Watch from 1976, (the boxy rectangular one). I had one back in 76 as a gift from my aunt who worked at the Timex factory in Besancon, France. I do not recall what happened to my original, but it is long since gone. One of the things I like best about it is the original metal strap by Timex. This thing just looks so awesome nowadays.

    I love Timex watches. I have a Flyback Chronograph, Analog Compass, expedition-gallatin, and a digital expedition compass. Also a G-shock and Seiko solar powered. I think even today Timex is an under appreciated brand. Some people complain about the tick can be loud. My personal opinion is that I like the tick. Anyway I to love Timex. To me (Timex) quartz watches are like the character actors of the watch world. Those other brands you mentioned are $h1t, they are cheaply made and have no to character to them.

    • @CarlMurawski
      @CarlMurawski  6 лет назад +2

      Well said. I once asked a watchmaker friend about MVMT and Daniel Wellington watches and he echoed your sentiment, saying they basically turn them away if they come in for repair.
      Timex is a brand that becomes addictive due to their low cost of entry and cool new designs with good build quality. Thanks for sharing!

      So true. The Timex ‘tick’ is so a thing for the brand. I can’t wear those suckers at night, it drives me nuts. Seriously though, Timex never gets its due. In the land of cheap factory made watches made by upstarts, heritage matters. Having a brand that is the recognized timekeeper of marathons and races around the world reminds us just how serious of a player Timex used to be. History’s truest work horse-a proletariat in our land of luxury brands. ☺️

    I shopped watches all over and ended up spotting an expedition model in REI. I've had better luck with Timex than a lot of more expensive brands. They've done a good job of zeroing in on what it takes to make a good value and the styling is much better than about anyone. By the way. Best Buy has Red Wing leather bands for Apple Watches that are also very nice. Red Wing is just down the river from their headquarters in Minnesota so it was a local connection.

    I am a big fan of Citizen watches. Any Ecodrive is a must.....no battery to replace. I have both Timex and Citizen, and cannot go wrong with either. I have seen some videos about Orient watches so those might be a brand to check out.

    I had a timex in the days when they were wind up only and they were truly terrible. They must have gained two hours in the space of a short bus journey of half an hour.I would never have touched them again but I am so pleased to see they have upped their game and they are now highly reliable and highly regarded.

    • @charlie-obrien
      @charlie-obrien 5 лет назад

      At least it was correct twice a day! Lol (groan).
      Seriously though, they are making great affordable watches with lots of varying functions. I have several that are superior time pieces and caused me to sell off a Seiko solar (never looked right, and the band was awful).
      You can jump back in for anywhere from $30 (w/ Indiglo) and up to the new automatic. All getting great reviews.

    Hey, I have to agree with you. Timex is a great watch. My older brother found a Timex watch. Back in the 60's. It was an adverage looking watch. He wore it until he was grown and out of school. He gave it to me. I wore it for many more years. I had to replace the band a couple of times. But the watch never failed. Just wined it up and keep on trucking. I have a collection of about ten watches. One of them is a Timex I bought about twenty years ago at Kmart. It still works just fine. I wear it every now and then. Timex is a great watch. Where does Timex make there watches at now? I hardly ever see them in the stores anymore. Great video thanks for sharing. I hope you have a blessed week.

    • @CarlMurawski

      Well I know they started in Waterbury Connecticut but have long since moved their manufacturing overseas. This is likely why they're able to offer such great products for the price. I really like the fact that they just seem to get better the longer you own them, whether linked to memories or just cool patina.

    I grew up in Waterbury. I have a 38mm and 40mm Weekender as well as a 40mm Waterbury Classic. Although, I didn't live during the glory days of "the dirty water", I'm proud to wear these watches to pay homage to my hometown. Timex is a very underrated brand that gets a lot of unwarranted grief from collectors. I appreciate their style, heritage, and affordability.

    I know some collectors don't like Timex watches because of how they are made but they seem like a good brand in that they're made to be pretty durable and if you do break them they're fairly easy to replace. I know I would not want to wear a Rolex out how ending fence post. But I would probably at least attempt to do it with an inexpensive Timex.

    The main problem I had with the weekender was the band itself. On almost all of their straps the adjustments that hold the left over strap are static. So if you have a lot of strap left over, it will not be seated because the straps don’t move. Did you run into this problem? It seemed like the watch you had was two straps, not one.

    • @CarlMurawski
      @CarlMurawski  6 лет назад

      I know which strap you’re referring to, and it would be nice if they had a sliding retainer for smaller wrists. The one I have does have a two-piece strap and I have gorilla wrists so there hasn’t been a problem.

    I LOVE Timex. I have a Vintage one. There watches have personality and an unexplainable fun to them. I wish they would create self winding automatics again so we could have more of an interaction with the watch. They would do well if they came out with higher end watches. The hard ticking of a Quartz really bothers me 😐.

    For a 15,5cm wrist which weekender would recomend to me the 38mm or the 40mm? I am 1:80 tall and 42 years but I have slim wrists?
    Kind regards from spain

    • @CarlMurawski
      @CarlMurawski  6 лет назад

      It sounds like you may want to go with the 38mm. I know the whole "wrist clock" fad is hot right now but in my opinion nothing looks worse than a watch that overpowers your wrist. 38mm is still well within the realm of casual watches without going into classic dress watch territory and is actually a more traditional size. Even Rolex was late to add 40mm and larger sizes since it wasn't very popular in the early days of wristwatches.

    I've been looking at MVMT watches tho. Are they really not very good? To be honest I care most about how a watch looks but I don't want to be ripped off either.

    • @CarlMurawski
      @CarlMurawski  6 лет назад +2

      I think MVMT, The Fifth, and Daniel Wellington are severely overpriced for what you get. That said, I think the important thing to keep in mind is perceived value. If you absolutely love your MVMT watch and wear it for years without issue then its value to you is worth the price. This is something I hope comes across in my reviews is that the value of something is what you believe it is, I got a lot of crap in my Saddleback video from people who obviously love the brand. All I'm trying to do is prevent people from buying something that poses as a high quality product and suggest alternatives which may be superior.
      TLDR: If you absolutely love it, go for it!

    • @maurystanger5468

    I like the styling on these but it drives me nuts when a quartz watch second hand doesn't hit the indices...and I've never had a Timex that does. Also not a fan of the snap on case backs...very difficult to change batteries. Still, very glad they're upping their game. Nice video!

    • @CarlMurawski
      @CarlMurawski  6 лет назад

      I know what you mean, it's really nice to see a snappy and precise second hand. Of course, we need to keep in mind the price of this watch and it's intended purpose. Still it would be great to see!

      Have a $15 Casio MRW200H hits them dead on as does my $45 Casio MDV106 diver. The $15 Casio is so accurate I use it to set my automatics. Poor quality control on Timex's part.

    • @pilotavery
      @pilotavery 5 лет назад

      Timex chronographs have digitally adjustable hands that you can adjust to 1/10th of a second. Read the instruction manual to figure out how to fix that.

    I have several Timex watches and I hate them. Replacing the battery in them is a total pain in the butt. Unlike many other watches which have screw backs on them or unlike Casio which has small screws to hold the case back on some of their lower cost watches, Timex chooses to have a press on back on their watches. This is a royal pain to pry off, and an even bigger pain to put back on. Made in China. You get what you pay for.

    Honestly, the Timex of old represents the worst of American consumerism. Cheaply-built, disposable junk pretending to be something nice. I'm very glad to see the brand has been making actual efforts to improve its quality and reputation in the watch world as of late, but they still have a good ways to go before I would consider one for myself.
