Finally I got my hands on EVGA NVidiai GTX 1070 FTW edition. Custom PCB, proper power management, out of the box overclocking, RGB, silent fans, VR ready - it is all there. Beast of a card.

is the top PCIe x1 slot between the CPU cooler and the GPU still usable or is it blocked by the cooler? Nobody seems to be filming a straight-on perspective, just angled ones :)

Usable but just about. GPU does not obstruct it as it just has a back-plate. CPU cooler I have does not reach the slot to cover it - I still have around 3cm to play. You can plug in a bunch of cards as long as they are not extending beyond the back of the slot.

just a plane firewire card in case i can not get a thunderbolt to firewire adapter to work from the Asus ThunderboltEX II card - too bad most motherboards do not feature any native firewire connections anymore

stellan0r check Digitus DS-30201-3 4-Port 1394a PCI Express Card Firewire. I bought it on Amazon for €15 and worked very well for me for grabbing video footage from old camera. I needed no drivers and the card never gave me any issues. Plug and play. Data rates decent too - 100/200/400 Mbps.
