How about a double layer floor so you can slide a pad in.

Shawn, thanks for everything that you and your family do. We always look forward to watching your videos. Extremely informative and always very intuitive. you probably don't realize how much money you save the people that watch your videos, let alone all of the problems that gets solved ahead of time before heading out on a trek. Great stuff love the pup tent,we will have no problem letting everyone else know that they would more and likely use this just like we would. Take care, you guys are great. Love the Ledbetters.

Thanks Dutch for thinking about our friends! I've looked for awhile for just this kind of set up to no avail. Once your dog gets used to it they will love having their own "Pup" tent to crawl into. The split magnetic door that some have suggested sounds worth checking into so they can come and go at will!

Wow that thing is awesome! Might need to get this for my beagle .Hmm I do worry about the bugnet ripping with one swipe though. Maybe no zipper at the bottom. Leave it loose? Kinda like a dog door. that way the lead can stay on the dog.

Ha! I was just thinking "Why doesn't he just attached that to a tarp CRL?" LOL. Actually, since my dogs carry all their own gear, carrying a separate RL would not be an issue. Funny thing is I was thinking about this set-up last week while out for a couple nights with my dogs. I had remembered when one of the guys from Dutch was sharing this in a MYOG group I'm in. Glad to see they are considering putting this into production. Love Dutch & Co.!!!

A single pole on the front (doesn’t have to be large at all) tucked into 2 small pockets or 2 or so pull outs on the sides and back may create a little more room and reduce flapping in windy conditions and reduce anxiety/stress on your dog. A place in the bottom to slide in a piece of blue or similar foam pad (protected from dog and ground) would make it easier in the colder months for your dog to regulate his body temps as well while sleeping.
Looks like a great start. I have been just getting into hammock camping this past year and am thinking of attempting to take one of my dogs with me and eventually would like this to be an option for him if he wouldn’t try and tear the door apart. I like the idea of magnetic closure so the dog doesn’t feel restricted and can come and go as he pleases.

  • @agashamnon
    @agashamnon 5 лет назад +12

Wouldn't mind a leash attachment point on the inside. Maybe extend the line coming down from the hammock through the top enough to make a loop to attach the leash to. Then you could leave the door open while you're messing around at camp but close them up at night and never have to mess with the leash

That's pretty awesome. I have been using the grand trunk mozzy 360 for whenever my pup comes backpacking with me. It does the job but it's heavy as a rock. Kinda like the puppy palace. I like that style because the dog is in there with me and I can clip her leash to the hammock so she doesn't bust through the net and take off after an animal in the middle of the night. Just wish it was lighter. If Dutch can make a net similar to the bird's nest but for one hammock and designed to go to the ground, I'd be a happy guy.

This would as you mentioned, be an interesting idea for a human tent as well. here's my question, is it big enough for say a ULA Catalyst to fit in it? I don't have a dog, but it would be cool to keep gear in.

This is a great idea. My dog has very short hair and gets cold super easy so I usually have to sleep with him in my hammock and an 80lb Doberman pinscher on your chest all night isn’t the most comfortable thing ever. I will be buying one once it’s for sale. Thank you for making something like this Dutch!!!

I was going to say the same thing. Plus it would feel to him like he's under your hammock like usual.

  • @TieWolf

I love this idea for dogs that are trained to stay put when told and are accustomed to different environments like this.
I love that I could stow gear in there as well as my dogs to keep my gear off of wet ground. It sorta makes this multi-purpose in a sense.
Getting ready for a trip to Rock Island, WI this summer and while it's not a true backpacking trip this time around, my pups are new to camping. The other dog "tents" on the market are quite heavy and built more for the agility and sport dog crowd that need a shaded spot for their dogs at events. I am super happy to see this come about. I had been hemming and hawing about a safe place for the pups at night that isn't bulky or super heavy. There are lightweight popup "kennels" that you can purchase for about $20 at walmart and I have used those before, but I am excited to compare the Dutchware pup tent to my experience with the pop up kennels. The kennels in question are quite cheap materials, but have rigid wire in them to give them shape without a tieout - with that, they are bulky.
Thank you for the video on this product!

Good morning Shawn 👍🏻👍🏻 Nice review !!! I think the ridge line idea under the tarp is a great idea with the tent opening facing the same as your hammocks to the side view not the front view, but you would differently have to get your pet used to the tent. Thanks for sharing, enjoy and have a Great week !!! Danny

if it was water proof on 3 sides, it could almost act as a pseudo door for 1 side of your hammock. perhaps shockcord to help eliminate the sag when you climb in the hammock.

I know I'm late to this party, but I have been thinking hard on better ways to integrate my dog into my transition to hammock camping. He's a smaller 25 lb guy, so it's not out of the question for he and I to learn to share a hammock, but not everyone has a small dog, and even for me, he won't be my last dog--odds are good my next dog will be bigger. What I want is a solution that is durable (can withstand a little canine abuse that even well-behaved dogs will sometimes provide), safe (protects my dogs from the elements: wind, water, bugs), and is secure (has some manner of ensuring that, if nothing else, my dog cannot wander off while I sleep).
Personally I'd prefer a heavier, stronger material than seems to be used in this prototype. For how small a pup tent is, using heavier, more durable materials wouldn't amount to a whole lot more weight, and I'd be happy to carry a few more ounces or more if it meant a more durable product for my dog.
We currently strap a Noz2noz Sof-Krate to our pack when canoe camping with our dog. It's acceptably durable even in its mesh, and while it's not as light as I'd like its weight doesn't bother me too much; however, it doesn't pack down as well as I'd like, and has no means of actually being a stand-alone shelter from the elements--we use it as a heat/bug retreat for him during the day in camp and take it into our tent with us at night. If we were to transition to hammocking, we might set it up under our hammock, but in that situation I'd be less than satisfied with its weatherproofness and security.

Tying it to the tarp with a shock cord great idea would probably alleviate a lot of that Slack since it would be static and not moving also have you ever seen those back door Nets with the magnets on them that you can just walk through if you put those on one side of that tent the dog could come and go as he pleased without ripping the mosquito net to pieces an internal leash attachment point would be great too or at least a hole to put my leash through Just a thought great video as always love your content keep up the good work

It's actually good for one side to be a bit lower than the other, you put your shoulders into the low side and it kinda pushes you back a little into the corner. It helps prevent sliding down to the middle

Thanks for sharing this. I’m so looking into it. Unfortunately, I made a novice mistake and caused my do to get bit my a copperhead. I will definitely look into this. Btw, it apparently was a dry bite and the dog survived thanks to me having Benadryl and a few others first aide skills. I felt horrible.

  • @TripleNickelOutdoors
    @TripleNickelOutdoors 5 лет назад

You could possibly attach it to the quilt hooks on some gathered end hammocks (i.e. chameleon, Dream Hammock). That would allow the pup tent to be closer to your hammock and make sure the tarp was covering it. You might still have to use that shock cord mod you thought of but at least the tent wouldn’t get wet.
Good stuff. Definitely a great idea! 👍

I also hammock camp with my pit bull, he weighs about 50 lbs. I really like to sleep with him IN the hammock. I have to put boots on him to keep his nails from tearing the fabric, but I think it would be interesting if there was a hammock design that would make it more comfortable to have a dog in the hammock or maybe suspended directly below your own hammock but still incorporate the same underquilt.

Would it be better to turn the front opening of the tent 1/4 turn towards you so the dog has you in his/her sight? Might calm the dog a little more. And you would have access to the zipper to open the door of the tent.

The human tent done in that teepee style and very light was made years ago. It could be used with a single pole or as you stated, a single ridge line. I like the idea of the dog shelter, however the zippers and no see um wouldnt last long with a large breed. Maybe an elastic entry where the tether could go in and out as the dog pleases?

I thought about that tent some more. In real use I think you will find it better if the door faces your hammock so the front is really under the tarp. Denali will be happier worshiping you that way and any rain will be less likely to blow in his front door. I'm not joking as my pups have all been happier when they knew where I was. It's part of their pack mentality.

If you use a ridge line, you can place the tent closer to your hammock, giving more weather coverage.

What about a guyline point in the center of the back panel to attach laterally to the tree, so at least one panel is in a fairly stable position? Or guyline points on the sides for trekking poles or large sticks? If you can't have a interior center pole like pyramid tents for humans, you'll need to create structure from the outside.

I had Dutch make me a birds nest single for my chameleon and discovered that on uneven/hill hang your dog slides on the argon. So only works on level ground. Hoping he comes up with a solution to sliding. I almost killed myself slipping in my socks on the argon bottom

Hmmmm, maybe some sort of very thin, but grippy mat cut down to size? Like a yoga mat, etc? That would be a DIY mod, of course. On the production side, maybe a double layer of his non DWR Argon fabric on the interior. It would ad weight, but the regular Argon is much less "slippy" and feels more like cotton.

I was also thinking some silicone caulking if u put some around the inside it would stop sliding. Saw that hack for people that didn’t want their sleeping pads sliding. Though I hate to do that to my gear 😬

I agree with the human version as I do not hammock but my boyfriend does. We could be closer. It would be nicer then cowboy camping under him. Lol

How about some magnetic strips in the center of the fly screen so the dog could come & go & the doors would stay closed afterwards.

For smaller dogs or ones the curl up in a ball when they sleep perhaps making it 3 sided (instead of 4)? It would certainly cut down on my weight/cost.

Wish my dogs were as chill as Denali but alas, hounds chase everything and make more noise than anyone in the woods wants to hear.

It might need a heavier bottom. I could see dogs' claws ripping it, especially on a rocky surface.

Looks cool but I'm scared my dog would claw through the material. This would be ok for very calm dogs that take everything in stride.

I should have showed that. It pretty much fits in your hand. About the diameter of a Nalgene bottle, but shorter.

My dog would definitely freak out & shred the mesh to get out. I expect one could slowly train the dog to be okay with a put tent

There are a lot of issues with this. You have to have a very well behaved dog to not have this shredded. With it connected to the suspension you run the risk of the dog jerking the whole thing while you sleep if it’s spooked or otherwise decides to it has to get out.
I don’t like the idea of the dog being separated from the owner. Something like the Cave Creek Pet Palace is more my style.
