  • Hammock camping is awesome and I love it. But there is a bit of a learning curve in order to have a good experience with hammock camping. It also takes a bit more work at camp to get your shelter setup than a tent. However, I feel like the sleep I get out of a hammock is worth the extra time I spend on setting up my hammock. Plus, I'm one of those guys who likes to fiddle around with my hammock once I'm at camp. I'm always looking for ways to improve my camping experience. If this sounds like you then hammock camping may be right for you.
This video describes the two different types of dog shelters I use when I go hammock camping with my dog, Sherpa...
    1. Dutchware Pup Tent: This is a lightweight option with easy setup. It gives Sherpa great flexibility of getting in and out of the tent as she wants. The only thing I don't like about this option is that I don't have access to her during the night. I would like to be able to pet my dog and make sure she is okay. This option keeps her secure and safe but also isolated from me. And one of the reasons I bring my dog is because I want to spend time with her. So that lead me to option 2...
    2. Grand Trunk Bug Net Shelter: This option requires a bit more setup and weighs twice as much at the Pup Tent but it is my preferred option. I like how it provides an enclosed space and allows me access to my dog. She is able to easily get in and out of the shelter. And what I really love about this option is that my dog likes to get up early in the morning to go out and pee, and this option allows me to unzip the bug net and let her out without me ever having to leave the warmth of my quilt and hammock.
Those are the two options I have explored. I'd love to hear different ways that you might provide a shelter for your dog when you go hammock camping. I'm always looking to improve my setup if possible.
    Thanks for watching!

That was exactly what I have been considering - taking our pup for a first time camping adventure. Really appreciate the multiple option reviews

I enjoyed this and had wondered about hammock camping with a dog. Both shelters were nifty, but I would prefer the larger one that allows better dog access. Sherpa is a beautiful dog!

I really appreciate you sharing this. I have developed different things for my best buddy, but I think we both share the same love for our dogs. I, too, find myself reaching out of my hammock to scratch my Golden's head in the middle of the night.

Well this is ironic, this Vid answered a question I had in your "5 tips" episode.
I've always wondered how a dog would do in their own hammock (say a HH Scout Zip), hung below yours, like a gear bag. I'm sure it would need some mods, the most being training your dog, at home, to use a hammock.
When Gifford and I would go on an overnighter (tent camping), I would put booties on his paws, Ruff Wear makes some with Vibram soles and a boot tread.
Gifford was my Lab, 15-1/2 years old.
Now just a place in my heart and a file in my brain. I miss him so much.
Watching Sherpa brings back some terrific memories.
She is Beautiful! Full of joy and love.

Thanks for your comments. I love hearing about folks and their dog camping experience. I like the Grand Trunk option because it protects her from the mosquitos. I recall a trip to the Wind River Range to the Titcomb Basin and there were tons of mosquitos at our campsite and Sherpa was begging to get inside the bug net and away from the mosquitos. So I think having something hang below your hammock like a gear bag but I do like being able to protect her from the insects too, even though it is a much heavier option.
      Thanks again commenting!

HI - Thanks for the vid. Could you tell me if the grand trunk is long enough for an 11ft onewind hammock? Many thanks.

Hey! My Dutch Netless hammock is 11 ft. and it works with that very well. So, I would assume that it would work for your 11 ft. onewind hammock.
I think it would even work with a 12 ft. hammock based on the room I have in the Grand Trunk but I've only used my Netless hammock with it.
