  • On Sept. 17th, 2016 the Schemel Forum hosted its annual University for a Day lecture series.
    Dr. Kraus introduces us to the works of Damon Runyon, remembered today primarily as the author of the stories that became the musical Guys and Dolls. Kraus gives examples of how Runyon used his newspaper columns to characterize gangsters, night club performers and rogue politicians as a new kind of New York elite and discussed how his short stories give us a glimpse into the post-immigrant experience.

    Thank you for this. For my part, 'Straight-goers' speaking, in the same manner, is due to the Broadway characters (Along with their counterparts worldwide) processing all that's said, into their own mindset. Once interpreted thus, it follows that it will be expressed, in their own language. As the stories are from the perspective of these characters, it makes perfect sense.
