This was great. I've never actually read Runyon's work, but you've made me want to give it a shot.
Great! Now I've got "Fugue for Tinhorns" running though my head
You know, I think I might like your "At The Source" videos the most. I get the feeling sometimes that people who aren't show people (fans, workers, or both) don't realize how fragmented an impression of things the rest of us can get.
OHMYGOD Sky's name is Obadiah!!!!!🤣🤣🤣
I'd also include "The Big Street", a dark adaptation of "Little Pinks", with Lucille Ball playing outside her manic, comic image; and Henry Fonda. Runyan helped produce, which may account for its relatively darker tones.
I remember seeing the Guys and Dolls movie as a kid and really enjoying it. I hope I can see a staged production someday (though it'll be hard to top Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra as Sky Masterson and Nathan Detroit. (Old blue eyes--swoon!)
Wasn't the Bob Hope movie The Lemon Drop Kid, which introduced the Christmas standard "Silver Bells", based on a Runyon story?
Thank you for the wonderful Nicolas Bentley artwork!
good show :) glad you popped back up in my feed I lost track of your show! now to go into the archives and see what I missed!
Good video.
Guys and Dolls is one of my favourite movies.
For me, it's a must record whenever it's on TCM.
I would like to read some of Damon Runyon's works myself. I'll like to know if Penguin has an anthology of Runyon's work. I saw Guys and Dolls a number of times and it's one of my favorites. Also, "Lady For a Day" which Frank Capra directed was remade in the early 60's (also by Capra) as "Pocket Full of Miracles" which was Capra's last film as director.
I was going to mention that. I think Pocketful of Miracles was a semi-musical, with a few songs thrown in.
I did a little research. Some old songs, probably in the public domain, were sung, but nothing new except the title song.
There are several collections of Runyon's stuff out there, including Penguin's "Guys and Dolls and Other Writings." Check your library's e-book collection; they may have some titles available.
I've liked GUYS AND DOLLS for years but never thought of reading Runyon's work until now. Thanks for including that website in the video! Your summaries are utterly intriguing, especially the one for "Sense of Humor" (I have a soft spot for film noir/gangster film sadists).
There was a remake of Guys and Dolls announced a while ago, to be directed by Bill Condon. I wonder if it's still getting made.
Here's some ideas for new at the source episodes how about at the source episodes for the musicals hairspray evita and the King and I
One of my biggest problems with Guys and Dolls is I find it’s pacing to be an issue. The show opens with a focus on Nathan and Adelaide but then completely changes gears one Sky and Sarah take over. We end up with a lot of time spent with Sky and Sarah that Nathan and Adelaide aren’t as well developed as they could be. I love Marry the Man Today but it should come at the top of the second act not right before the end. We never see the women talk with their men and resolve their issues we just skip to the future where the problems are solved and it feels like there’s a scene missing. If you had Sarah and Adelaide meet and talk it out earlier then they could be actively looking for a solution to their problems at the same time that the guys are then have everyone come back together after Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat. I was in this show when I was 14 and the lack of internal resolution as opposed to final resolution still bugs me to this day.
guys and dolls huh i wonder who nathan lane played
Nathan Lane played Nathan Detroit on Broadway, and, in fact, took part of his stage name from that character.
@@MelanieNLee you don't say
Wait, Runyon refers to women as “Tomatoes”??? Why?
Old school slang, I don’t think he created it but it means a good looking woman. My guess is it’s claiming that pretty women will turn red and bruise easy.
