Thomas Sankara rose to power in Burkina Faso in a popularly supported coup in 1983. To symbolize this rebirth, he renamed his country from the French colonial Upper Volta to Burkina Faso, Land of Upright Men" and launched the most ambitious program for social and economic change ever attempted on the African continent.

I only just learned about him today. He is a true hero and would have made Africa into a powerful, unified block against imperialism!

We need more leaders in Africa like Gen. Thomas Sankara. We have too many greedy leaders in Africa who are ruining our continent. Future leaders should try and emulate this icon of a leader, not only in Africa but around the world.
