I've heard about this moment in legend. I hope that when he gets back from rehab, he finishes the wall. Because this is truly the era where Pink Floyd could do no wrong.
It's a sad story but it's similar to Metallica firing Dave Mustaine. It was a guy who was undeniably talented, but they just couldn't go forward with someone that unstable and unpredictable possibly sabotaging them.
The guy went legitimately crazy. What were they supposed to do? As you said, they made several albums in tribute to him, and Waters especially took it incredibly hard. Besides, while I know many early Floyd fans will vehemently disagree, I wasn't a fan of that iteration of them anyway. Post Barret Floyd is iconic.
@@somersetcace1 yeah post barret floyd is where they really shine, it's where their albums go from pretty good to greatest of all time. The album run of meddle to the wall is one in a million. Just unbelievable.
@@somersetcace1 He wasn't crazy. That whole narrative was pushed by the band and the circle of fans who didn't really look into the whole story past what the albums and band members said about him, they weren't equipped to understand his situation. He still put out some records and was briefly in another band post 1970, but ultimately didn't feel satisfied with the attention and pressure of being a famous rockstar. He went into a deep depression and by his own sister's account despised the band and Roger for quite a while. But he lived a relatively normal life, not wanting to be attached to Pink Floyd and the whole "crazy" mythos surrounding his mental break and departure.
Animals as a whole should be mandatory to listen to this and read the book. It’s a timeless masterpiece as the lessons and meaning of the album will forever exist within the world and rules we abide by. It really Pink Floyd’s magnum opus. They should have made a film of this instead of The Wall. They could have done some crazy transformations and shit , but no. We get Geldof on a comedown.
Pigs was about specific politicians so it would naturally lose its freshness over time, while Dogs was about a type of person. Dogs will remain relevant for much longer. Also, it has more engaging musical breaks.
Roger Waters doesn't even try in the slightest to hide who he is talking about on Pigs. He is extremely blunt and upfront about it. Margaret Thatcher is referenced constantly. "You like the feel of steel" being a reference to her nickname "the Iron Lady" as well as the hatpin and handgun being references to her lack of compassion. Verse 3 is even more obvious. "Hey you Whitehouse," talking about Mary Whitehouse. And the lyric was changed to "Hey you Thatcher" when Roger toured after he left the band in the 80s because people thought it was a reference to the US White House. Which, funnily enough, still happens almost 50 years later.
My favorite Floyd album. The album is loosely based on Animal Farm, but while Animal Farm critiqued the rise of the Soviet Union and Stalinism, this is a critique of the flaws of capitalism. It also came out when prog rock and stadium rock was on a decline, and punk was taking over the scene, so it sticks out in that regard as a more angry, aggressive sound compared to their previous albums. Great stuff!
Pink floyd doesnt make sense to those who dont see the human experience as one. If you have no interest in growing awareness as a species, not just individual, many things in life will not haha. This happens through awareness which breeds intelligence and communication, our experiences and reality are only valid with multiple perspectives. I love your attitude dude!
Pink Floyd doesn't "make sense" to anyone who gets nervous if a song is longer than 4 minutes and contain more than three chords, or lots of ambient stuff.
Animals is my favorite album ever, but it's refreshing to see a reaction that doesn't blindly praise every aspect of the music just to please the audience. It feels more genuine when you really like it.
I dived deep back into their music years back and haven’t come out of the rabbit hole since. Dogs is my favorite song to say the least I gotta legit listen to daily. I will say wait until you get your first taste of Wish You Were Here.
I always thought it was "Who was given a patterned back" in the last segment of "Dogs", like the marks you get from being branded or getting lashed. TIL. edit: I pulled my vinyl copy which has the lyrics printed on the sleeve. That line (pat on the back/patterned back) isn't even listed there apparently?
Can you post the full Census Designated By Jane Remover uncut album reaction? IIRC the stream was on October 20, 2023; the same date as the Jane release and the Blink 182 album which Brad reacted to shortly after.
Funny how younger generation thinks about puppy dogs and Furrys when this song is on, but my generation thinks about the book animal farm and the association with certain types of people being dogs in the world,, yeah yeah I know shut up boomer🙄
Incorrect. This album is loosely based on the book. It is BLATANTLY OBVIOUS if you look at the track titles. However, while Animal Farm was a critique on the Russian Revolution and Communism, the album spins it and is a critique of capitalism.
dogs is a really strong contender for greatest song of all time
In my opinion only looses to Clair de Lune

Rogers using a "Talk box" like Joe Walsh or Peter Frampton. Its a tube he sings into and it syncs his guitar to his vocal pitch.
That's probably Gilmour, Waters only played rythmn guitar on this track
