You say that the can opener is a little silly because almost all can have a pul tap today but I have actually several times had that pul tap pop off without the can opening so I was glad I had a can opener in my Victorinox.
I use the can opener alot, just because. At work sometimes a co-worker forgets a dedicated can opener. Always one in my pocket. The corkscrew loosens knots, the hook pulls jammed zippers. Great knife !
My EDC for 45 years. Use the magnifier all the time to examine fine print, find / remove splinters, examining items too small to see with naked eyes and more. Like bottle opener for its main use as well as larger blade screw driver and so-so wire stripper. Need the scissors for all kinds of things. One main selling point is the end Phillips driver. The Explore knife is just right in so many ways. Usually also carry a Leatherman Wingman as a backup and for the pliers. The Explore has helped me get things done and a few times got me home when impromptu repairs have been need on vehicles.
I just got mine a few hours ago.. I have to say that this might end up being the best SAK I've ever owned. It's not nearly as heavy or bulky as I expected. I've been carrying it around for about 3 hours and, while I know it's there, it doesn't' feel at all obtrusive. A few days of EDC will tell the tale.
I still have my Explorer I use it everyday and still get the job on whatever task or chore that needs to get done I had mine for 11yrs it's still a good Swiss Army Knife and the perfect companion for my Leatherman because I'm a multi tasker, Thanks for the review and love the video.
I'm glad I have the three larger 'sheath knives' to choose from -- this one, the Huntsman, and the Spartan Lite. Horses for courses. This width sits especially nicely in the hand and fingers *for somewhat extended use* ; better than does the Climber for me... though I found that the Climber II with the "budget" nylon scales just fits my fingers a lot better (who knew?); FYI. BTW, the similar width & girth of the Huntsman -- a wee bit less there -- helps make the saw more efficient in use vs. the Camper's and the Farmer's, I think. The whole tool thus feels more stable and powerful by enough to appreciate again & again. As an older guy, I call my Explorer "the Presbyopia Special". That magnifier really helps out in a drugstore environment!
A bit late but you can get a pin in the hole even with a rear Phillips driver - it just needs to be a small-headed one, like the official Victorinox pin, and not one with a larger plastic head.
I still depend on the can opener but I have adapted it for other uses as a home cook. Example: to deseed cardamom, peel fruits such as oranges, split spices such nutmeg, use a mini wedge, etc. Do not limit your imagination just because it is marketed as a can opener. Good Video and thanks.
I love this little knife and I really appreciate the magnifying glass. I don't know if it's so obvious that it's seldom mentioned but, as an avid hiker, it's a great tool for fire starting (on a sunny day) for a simulated or actual survival situation. That alone makes a great addition to an EDC lineup.
Hi, thanks for this interesting video presentation, makes me want to own one! Now for the corkscrew... sorry i'm continental... and french, and that corkscrew, well we got to have it! In france nearly ALL bottles have corks, the only bottles that don't are either extremely cheap and disgusting wines that only alcohol addicts buy or wine meant to be used specificaly for cooking. So in france (and most of europe) cork= good, plastic cap=cheap and dirty. Of course, it's a cultural and therefore marketing thing, but that's the way it is! Also in France drinking wine is not at all a "posh" thing, it's just like beer in northern europe! Again, thanks for you video!!
Fair enough! Here our wine all seems to have have metal screw caps, but I guess I havent spent more than 30 bucks on a bottle since before I had kids haha. So maybe I'm oblivious! This is a great knife, you should definitely get one!
For me, gotta have the *versatile* corkscrew vs. the compromised, light duty mid-mount°° Phillips tool: it just does more things in typical urban or suburban EDC situations, unless you have a specialty need for a #2 Phillips. I myself have never thought while out & about: damn, if I only had a full size Phillips driver! YMMV. °° Ah, but the beefy end-mount Phillips tool -- now that one is designed to really work! --> Explorer & Spartan Lite (2.9 ounces, same as a Climber).
I bought my first Victorinox Explorer in 1975. They were excellent knives and almost indestructible compared to other similar knives. Over the years I bought 3 more--eventually they do wear out. I've misplaced my last one that I've had about 10 years so I bought another one on 12/1/3 to replace it. WHOA!!! It ain't the same knife. The tools are thinner and they are definitely not as wide. The magnifying glass has been changed and doesn't appear as powerful. The tools are designed differently also. The phillips screw driver is different and the fit and finish isn't as good as any of my other ones. The great knife has changed. So, I went to Ebay and found a "new" old one--the one with the thicker gray plastic magnifying glass. And, the tools are the full width of the knife so the back of the knife is smooth. I'll buy another of the old models when i find them. You really messed up a good knife, Victorinox. You should also know I'm a big fan of Victorinox and me and everyone in my family have been to the factory in Switzerland. I don't want to tell you many Victorinox knives I have--they'd put me in a home. Anyway, forget the new model Explorer if you can get the older one.
The new magnifying glass is better than the old one, it's more powerful than the old one. I've seen a review on RUclips. It was a guy that had an older 90's explorer. To me ,the new explorer looked better...
You can't ditch the can opener, it's one of victorinox's wonder tools, imo, there's far to many people simply don't know how to use the full potential of there knife,,,corckscrew, if one only '' see's"" a corckscrew, then there not looking,,,,,,many a life saving tale ends happily due to a little red pocket knife.
They should put a really good wire strip tool/knife in there instead of the can opener. I know there IS a wire stripper, but it's not great. I'm thinking like the electricians knife they make in the Alox series.
Can opener is a waste of a space. There's a combination tool that looks much more like the bottle opener on my vic hunter and it works fine for cans. No need for both of them. Philips drivers ftw
I still find plenty of cans that need opening with the can opener and am glad it's still ever present on the knives.
Nice video.
8:35 Plenty of cheap wines with corks in the US. Need that corkscrew!
This is my edc. I do use the can opener. Use the magnifying glass multiple times per day. The only thing I would change would be to add a file.

Can opener is good for carving spoons if sharpened ,or even as is!

Nice review, I have the Swiss Champ and really do like feeling that I can take on any task within the boundaries of such a marvellous tool. 👍
hey I'm new to these knives, are the knives/scissors sharp?
Yes typically very sharp out the box and they are pretty easy to sharpen

The can opener is awesome. Better to have it than not.
I’ve carried the explorer since 1983
Good review, thanks. 4 years later, what are your thoughts on the Explorer now? Have you been carrying it regularly?
I use it all the time - it rides with my sharpening kit to check burrs and the pen blade cleans the strops. its indispensible!
@@CedricAda and after 7 years! Do you still use it? I consider buying it now
I just picked one up from probably the early 90s preowned for $30 USD
Need a glasses screwdriver and perhaps a place to hold screws.
you can keep the scales shiny by polishing with toothpaste.
They should put a really good wire strip tool/knife in there instead of the can opener. I know there IS a wire stripper, but it's not great. I'm thinking like the electricians knife they make in the Alox series.
I agree the saw is not an urban EDC It's kind of like a Condo owner with a power mower lol ... Nice video 👍
Those saws are very sharp but they should be a little longer to use properly and it sucks that you can't replace them easily.
3:55 “Judge me by my size, do you?”
Mine ate all great and marks add character

Don’t like the plastic magnifying glass housing
