What do you think of the Victorinox Explorer?
I have bought or been gifted many Victorinox knives over the years and this is my favorite of all!
There's something just so joyous of having a magnifying lens to hand that makes me feel like a kid again. Except the flashlights are good now!
This is my EDC for years now, before that I carried Huntsman (not much use for woodsaw) and Handyman (to heavy). I would get rid of small blade and put combo tool there, so no need for opener layer, ie. we got 3 layer miracle tool.
That's a mod I want one day, along with swapping the hook for a Compact one with the file. You'd get so much out of so little!
That British racing green is smashing, but if I had that colour on my Huntsman I would’ve lost it when dropped out hiking/camping! Lol
I fitted bright yellow Plus scales to make the knife a bit more hi-vis and opened up the 4th scale slot and second pinhole. Felix Immler gives a good tutorial on RUclips 👍🏼
I do love how the SAK yellow looks! I've given the 4th slot mod a go in the past and made a pig's ear of it, but I might give it a go again in future, would certainly be useful to have!
No doubt, I will buy one at some point, because the tools peculiar to it (inline Phillips and mag class) are very useful - for example, I am always struggling to read text on bottles, packets of whatever, or instructions on new gadgets, though I use my phones' camera for it now. However, a 2-3 layer SAK is great in the pocket, and this is 4 1/4, at least.
There's a discontinued model, I think it was called the scientist? It was essentially a three layer Explorer that lacked the scissors iirc. Some people still make them via mods today out of preference!
Tinker is my favorite for urban EDC. That small blade is great for opening packages. I really like the threading awl/reamer on a SAK. Tinker doesn't include a saw or scissors but is slim.
The tinker is a good choice and the rear phillips driver can come in handy!
The Explorer is a bit too wide for my EDC. Maybe in a few years when my eyesight keeps getting down.
There are more than two sizes of Vics, though Victorinox 'slims down' their range. 84mm, 93mm, 111mm and 130mm are still in production.
My collection includes almost all sizes of SAK, except the GAK with the combo saw/opener. I've covered the 84mm and 93mm on the channel already, and touched on the 72mm models in the Olight K1 video.
In the future I would like to do a guide to SAKs video that includes all the sizes, including the previous Wenger models that are odd sizes themselves. I just need to get my hands on a GAK first!
For what it's worth I think the 72mm and 84mm SAKs are some of the most compelling, shame they aren't more diverse and easy to come by.
