    The small blade is awesome for skinning wire. The small notch on the big screw driver/bottle opener that you call a wire bender is actually for stripping the plastic cover off wiring for electrical work. I really like both those tools, I really like your informative vids. Thanks!

    I got my Fieldmaster some twenty years ago, and I still use it once in a while. To my surprise, it doesn't get rusty at all even in a humid country like Taiwan.

    The Fieldmaster was the second SAK I bought. I got a SwissChamp and wanted something thinner. I then ended up getting a Deluxe Tinker, exchanging the Fieldmaster's saw for the little pliers.
    I'd like to have the in-line awl instead of a small blade or nail-file, but to each their own. Great video as always.

    I'm a big fan of the small knife of 91mm SAK's. I carry a Climber and use the small blade a lot more than the large. I usually use my SAK for finer tasks like package/box opening and sharpening pencils, which the smaller blade provides better control for. I keep the large blade sharp for when I really need it.

    Wow, that was a close shave - I was looking at the Fieldmaster versus the Evolution 18 and after much umming and ahring I plumped for the Fieldmaster (which is due to arrive today). But I still had a bit of buyers remorse, so was glad you mentioned your thoughts on the Evo18. Makes me feel better. Great video, thank you. 👍

  • @OutsideTheTargetDemographic

    I got my 50yo+ receptionist a Huntsman, as she mentioned she has never had, but always wanted, a SAK.
    Months ago she went to visit a friend in the hospital, and went through security. The metal detector went off, and she was pulled aside. A search of her purse produced the Huntsman, which she had forgot she tossed into her purse. Security found it, looked at her, and said "Oh, a Swiss army knife. No problem. Have a good day" and sent her on through.
    Two things: 1)the Huntsman was small and light enough to have been forgotten by my friend, and 2)as you said, slip joint vs locking blade, coupled with the Victorinox being a "Gentleman's Tool", not a weapon (even though it has scissors, saw, small and large blade, all of which could easily be used to kill someone).

    • @txtoolcrib
      @txtoolcrib  4 года назад +3

      I agree, in most instance an SAK will be considered a gentlemen's knife and not something to be concerened about. Even though in the right hands, anything can be a weapon.

    Call me crazy, and I may be the only one, but I prefer Swiss Army Knives with the thickness of the Deluxe Tinker and the Farmer X Alox over thinner knives for EDC. I feel like they give you enough to hold onto, and give you a bit more in tools without being too big for EDC. Thinner knives start to feel a bit small to me, and I do not have big hands. I also feel exactly the same as you about the Alox knives.

    • @127AFS
      @127AFS Год назад

      You're not alone in your "craziness." I like the thicker multitools as well. Size is rarely a limiting factor to me. I have big pockets, so portability isn't a problem. I've also found that clipping a multitool to the back pocket makes the weight aspect almost a non-issue since it can ride along without banging against the front or side of my leg. Call me insane, but I've been known to pocket carry a Leatherman Surge that way on occasion. The more functions a multitool has the better in my opinion. I've even found creative uses for tools that seem "useless" to most people. I used my Victorinox fish scaler just the other day to crease cardboard so I could easily fold it into a box. It worked great. With Victorinox knives, about the only limiting factor for me is that they can get too fat to hold and use easily. I would never want to own a Swiss Champ sized knife. I do have a couple in the Handyman size range, but I usually prefer to wield something slightly slimmer in my hand like the Huntsman lite, Ranger, or Deluxe Tinker. Pretty much any knife Victorinox makes with 4 or 5 layers is great. A couple of the 3 layer models are decent. But I personally find most of the other 2 and 3 layer models a bit underwhelming in terms of versatility.

    Nice review.
    Thought of getting a fieldmaster before decided on huntsman.
    For some reason fieldmaster is 20% more pricey than a huntsman in my country.
    I already got multiple philips screwdrivers and zero corkscrew. Also it’s easier to find a screwdriver out in the “wild” than a corkscrew (which provided space for smaller eyeglasses screwdriver and tinder.)

    5:10 -- Or a *5* combination tool, since the 91mm models' flathead (on the bottle opener) can fit into a 1/4" (6mm) _square to hex adapter,_ thus you can put any hex driver bit in there; therefore, no need for that phillips driver on the backside. ;) Corkscrew can now be used to hold ferro rod + tinder! The used to be Wenger is a nice knife, but it has really shitty scissors, so what is the point to have it for you manicure purpose? Victorinox scissors is the way to go. The only good thing about Wenger scissors is the spring.

      I carry just a set of tweezers, but recently I picked up a mini champ. I’m going to try it out to see how I like it.
