  • How to Format External Hard Drives on a Mac Running High Sierra OS 10.13 or later
Do you use LaCie or SeaGate Hard Drives on a Mac running High Sierra 10.13 or later? This tip is for you
There is a new setting in High Sierra that allows you to Hide Devices (not a good feature), but it is on by default. Go to View and select Show All Devices:
The fix is really easy, you just have to know it exists.
Open Disk Utility on a Mac:
    1. Go to Applications...Utility...Disk Utility or,
    2. Open Finder...Click Go...Utilities
    In Disk Utility:
    1. In View Menu...Check 'Show All Devices' (Cmd+2) or,
    2. In Dropdown Menu, View...'Show All Devices'
    In Sidebar:
Select Top Entry of Hard Drive you want to Format
    Press Erase in Top Center
    Name Hard Drive
    Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    GUID Partition Map
    Erase
    Done
Hard Drive should show Green Check and mount on your Desktop
    My favorite Hard Drives:
For Travel & Mobile: Lacie Rugged 4TB:
    amzn.to/2mUF2Eh
For My Desk: LaCie D2 Thunderbolt 6TB:
    amzn.to/2DmIxKB

I'll take it! Yeah, I really hope Apple addresses this in Mojave. It makes no sense why Apple makes this extra step necessary. I spoke with LaCie months ago and it was driving them crazy because everyone was returning the drives as defects, when there was nothing wrong with them. This video is pretty long for my style so I plan on making a shorter version if you ever need a refresher.
      Cheers,
      Mike 👊

i'm a creative type...i know the basics of my 2012 iMac Desktop.....but when it comes to this stuff, I'm like a deer in the headlights.....I have even hired a Best Buy Geek to come to my house, and sit with me, and clean this old sucker up, and see if we can use the WD Windows My Passport 3.0 with my iMac 2.0 USB....I have a HEAD-ACHE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If I have a 1TB external SSD (to only store media for video editing) should I format it as APFS + GUID instead of Mac OS Extended journaled + GUID? My Mac is running on High Sierra with an internal SSD formated as APFS. Any help is much appreciated. Great video by the way!

    • @MikeMurphyCo
      @MikeMurphyCo  6 лет назад

Great question. It's starting to get confusing as Apple is introducing new formatting types.
Short answer: I think you should format as APFS + GUID as it is optimized for SSD drives.
My MacBook Pro internal drive is SSD and was converted to APFS when I upgraded to High Sierra. I do not own any SSD external drives, but after doing some research, I would format at APFS + GUID.
      Considerations:
APFS is not backward-compatible so your hard drive will not mount on older machines not running OS High Sierra or later.
      Hope that helps,
      Mike

My favorite external hard drives are made by LaCie, but I also think Western Digital are affordable and reliable if you just need a drive for Time Machine backups or to store files & media.
Here is a 4TB Western Digital Drive for only $99 that would work fine with your iMac:

    • @MikeMurphyCo

I would first power down your computer all the way and restart. Plug in drive.
Plug in drive directly to computer and not using a hub. Try different USB Ports.
Test the drive on another computer and see if it will mount another computer.

My Seagate worked fine before High Sierra update. What are my options because I cannot reformat my external drive, everything I have is on this external drive that use to read/write/copy. Please help

    • @MikeMurphyCo
      @MikeMurphyCo  5 лет назад

Hi Andrew, I need to fully understand what is happening as it sounds like you are having trouble mounting your external drive and accessing the data on it. You do not want to format the drive at this point as you will erase everything once you format.
Tell me exactly what is happening. When you plug in your Seagate drive, it does not show up? Have you opened Disk Utility? Does it show up on the sidebar (left side). Do you see the option to Mount? Have you tried turning off computer and re-booting?
You can try starting your Mac in Safe Mode and see if it mounts okay. If it does, it usually indicates there is some type of software conflict. Turn off computer. Tap the power button and press the Spacebar until the login screen appears. Safe mode takes awhile to boot and may seem slow. It is really just troubleshooting. You can exit safe mode by restarting.
Let me know more details and I can help. Do you have access to another computer where you can plug it in and transfer data and then re-format drive?

So...some new things have happened since the 2019-004 update SNAFU. I noted that my SSD was not being recognized under the system report and TRIM support as a solid state drive. I had no problem updating that for my older white macbook running El Capitan but it was a different story for High Sierra when all sorts of problems occurred after I did this update including the "fix" which did not totally resolve my kernel panics. It took me ages to get restarted and a lot of luck. Now, I'm between a rock and a hard place: do I try and fix this in Terminal first, or try to create a Time Machine Backup on an SSD that does not show as a supported SSD user system report?

@@MikeMurphyCo Yes, thanks--they told me everything I'd done already was the best they could advise me (that includes all the different command and restore options, resets, etc.etc.). The so-called Apple store genius told me he thought my graphics cards was the problem, (and told me to buy a new computer), even though it passed all their tests and the ones we can do ourselves (which I've run repeatedly). I get a bright blue screen with fine vertical white lines in it when I try command + R most of the time, or other recovery commands. I just got it started again today after 2 days of trying everything including different internal and external hard drives, and my CCC backup drive (which used to work but stopped working). If the OSX Mac Utility box opens with the 4 options then I can restore H. Sierra and it works fine until the next kernel panic (I've disabled sleep mode etc. under energy saver which helps a little but other things have caused it to freeze up as well. One time it was when I tried to open Time Machine and another time when I tried opening an avi file or Apple Photos. My brother started having problems too with his Mac mini (also on High Sierra) after the security update and he's still trying to resolve his as well.

Hi Usman...I do not know all of the technical differences between the two exactly, but I do know GUID is a more modern standard and for Intel Macs and is required for all drives over 2 TB. The other advantage of GUID over Master is you can have more than 4 partitions. Hope that helps and thanks for the comment...Mike

      I can help you troubleshoot.
The first thing I would try is to shut down everything. Plug in the drive (use a different port if possible) and then turn computer back on. Open Disk Utility and see if it is anywhere on the left side.
Does your external drive need to work on both PC and Mac? If not, can you format the drive on Windows machine to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or something like MS-DOS (Fat) or exFAT and then plug it into Mac and re-format it in Disk utility to Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

A lot of WD drives come formatted with NTFS & Macs need +HFS (pre-High Sierra) or APFS (10.13 or later). Since you have access to a Windows machine can you format the entire drive or partition by adding a new volume and formatting for +HFS or whatever the PC will allow you to do. It may be MS-DOS (FAT) or exFAT. I have not formatted a drive on Windows for some time.
Also, If you are using a USB hub I would plug it into computer directly. 👍

Are you on a Mac using High Sierra 10.13.5?
What kind of external hard drive are you trying to format?
Is the external hard drive new or have you used it before?
When you plug in the hard drive does it show up on your desktop?
In Disk Utility, you selected the top title and chose Erase?

Itzel Mercado Hi there. First off: Are you running Parallels for Mac by any chance so you can also run Microsoft Windows on your Mac? If no, just ignore that. I’m just ruling stuff out.
I’m going to go through the steps to help you format your hard drive using High Sierra, but before you do so, turn off your Mac completely. Unplug everything from the computer ( take out power cable and unplug all USB/Lightning cables, etc). Plug them all back in after at least 30 seconds and turn computer back on.
      1. Make sure external drive is plugged into your computer and not a hub ( unless you have new MBPro with no ports)
      2. Open Disk Utility
      3. In the View Menu Select Alll Volumes
      4. In the left sidebar, locate the external drive and click on the top volume
      5. Press Erase
      6. Select AFPS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
      7.For Schema, Select GUID option
      8 Press Ok to erase.
9 wait until it says done with green ✅
      10. Look on desktop for the drive.
Let me know if it works for you. It should if the hard drive is okay.
      Best,
      Mike

Hi Dee. I'm not sure I know what you mean by installing High Sierra on your book. If you have a Mac that is newer than 2010 it should install either Sierrra or High Sierra. Are you getting errors when trying to install High Sierra?

The external hard drive is called my book. I actually just got off the phone with apple and they said with the new format they made where people couldnt have your external hard drive as a start up. Might be a way and they didnt want to tell me but i havent heard anyone use an external drive as a boot drive for high sierra. I still use it for regular sierra though. My internal drive doesnt work anymore

Dee 4 ah. Now I understand. Yes, the new APFS seems to be causing incompatibility issues and errors for many people.
I had not heard about the issue with High Sierra as a bootable startup drive but good to know. Thanks. Looks like there are some third party workarounds for formatting externals, but maybe there will be a future fix. Who knows with Apple lately. Good luck and sorry I could not be of much help. Best-mike.

@@MikeMurphyCo so my dad says he formated it on windows before and it is a hard drive for mac called my passport. he said you need to add some software so it will run on mac. if you can redirect me to a video with that, explains that it will be appreciated

@@Namibal204 You do not need to install the WD Smart software. You just need to format as Mac OS Extended (journaled). Follow the exact steps in the tutorial and it should work. 👍
