  • In a previous video, I showed some of the limitations of macOS High Sierra Disk Utility, while the new operating system version was still in beta. Now that the beta is over and we have the official release, the things we previously had to do using diskutil in Terminal are available in the graphical tool. Let's take a walkthrough, in video format, of macOS High Sierra Disk Utility. You'll learn a real "gotcha," the fact that full volume trees are hidden by default. You'll also learn how you can reformat an APFS container and volume to a macOS Extended partition.

I wish I'd found this video 2 days ago, before I started banging my head against my damn Macbook, trying to set up dual boot. Thanks.

Man, I'm not a big fan of these new Disk Utility features in High Sierra, but thanks for this awesome video! It really helped clear up most of my questions about it. :)

Excellent video. Very informative and helpful. Do you perhaps know why time machine backups to an external ssd are taking longer than on an external hdd for me? I must be doing something wrong.

Hi Jeff, Nice video. I like your presentation. I do wish you would have discussed the restore function. This video is really about partition and erase functions, not "...Disk Utility: A Video Walkthrough."

When you have allocated space on a drive Disk Utility sometimes freaks out when you try to resize from the GUI. You have to go command line.

Trying to combine 3 partitions of an external hard drive into one on an imac, Highliting the root external HD and going to partitions, there I see three partitions,
when clicking on one of them the minus icon is greyed out, so I can't get rid of the partition

Superb demonstration; thank you. I would also be grateful for advice on what option (APFS, Mac Extended Journaled, MS-DOS ...) to choose for reformatting a thumb drive to be encrypted and to be accessible not only from Mac but from Windows too.

Possibly ExFAT (for storing files larger than 2GB). As to encryption, as far as it was the case as of Lion you couldn't erase as ExFAT encrypted.

I have a few questions: 1. Do you know if its possible to restore APFS volumes? 2. Can you erase container disk with multiple APFS volumes? How do erase container with multiple encrypted APFS volumes?

Hi there, quick question? I have partitioned my mac because it got stuck on the apple load state and would not move on. I have partitioned and cannot erase the Main partition ( which has 0 data) and also can't restore the info from the partition where I am running at 235 used up space of a partition that is left with 248. How do I get all of my space back together again?

One question? If l have only one drive 1TB and on that drive is os high sierra, and l want to add a partition, will it work safe? To do not break something and mess my OS?

Hi, I had partitioned my disk without foreseeing that my applications will need more space. Now I need to take some space from my document drive and give it to the system drive (Macintosh HD). What should I do while keeping my installed applications safe?

Hi Jeff 🙋🏽‍♂️ Spent days trying to downgrade my 2014 15" MacBookPro11,3 to Mavericks.. My internal is a 1TB Adata SX6000LNP PCI-Express SSD... The further I was able to go is High Sierra -APFS-. Internet Recovery leads to Catalina install... Bootable Mavericks works just fine from external drive... but when I tried to install all HFS based OS's from Sierra down to Mavericks-, the SSD is not showing up on the list... -I just bought this specific 2014 MBP on ebay because it was listed as one that can have Mavericks on...the original SSD was 500gb, so that 1TB SSD was an upgrade... What can I do in order to have Mavericks on my system?

there used to be a option for erasing free space on the HD for previous os versions. Is that no longer available???? I thought that was an easy way of permanently deleting info from the HD?

Can anybody help me how to do this without losing the data of SYSTEM partition?

This appears to be very similar to Sun's ZFS file system. Wonder if Apple copied the functionality of it.

there is no facility for formatting usb disks for use on a windows pc no FAT etc.....High Sierra is nothing short of a disaster....I cannot connect with my other devices which are not Apple nor share files with friends who don't have High Sierra.....High Sierra is the ultimate in-house OS which cuts you off from the untermenchen - the ones who don't have APFS Apple devices.
Time to go back to Windows......all that money for a fancy iMac down the toilet.....

What happened to Repair Disk Permissions? It’s pointless to focus on the one aspect thats still functional whilst ignoring/avoiding the obvious - Practically zero functionality!
