- ----------------------------------------Step Guide----------------------------------------
1. Launch Disk Utility (located in the rocket app launcher or can be typed in and searched on the top right magnifier)
2. Select the drive you are trying to partition and remember the capacity storage amount that it has.
3. Lunch the terminal application
4. In the terminal enter: diskutil list
5. Look for the disk storage drive that matches the same information as the one shown in the Disk Utility app that you are trying to partition
6. Once found, follow whats on the same row and look for Apple_APFS Container. Remember the disk name under the identifier.
7. Then enter in the terminal:
diskutil apfs deletecontainer
8. then enter the disk identifier name. so it should look something like this.
diskutil apfs deletecontainer disk2s2
9. once you hit enter, that's it you are done.

Thanks man! This was a life saver! It's so awesome to find help like this late at night when no tech support is answering their phones.
40 videos later. I figured out the upgrade broke my old computer(which worked perfectly fine before). Thank you for this. And learned the power of having Timeline backups!!!
NEVER MIND TERMINAL!!!!
You can convert APFS to HFS+ MUCH easier... simply go to the View menu in Disk Utlity and select Show All Devices. This will now show you all the Containers AND Volumes.
Disk Utility ONLY allows converting Containers from APFS to HFS+ so now select the container for your volume then click the Erase button. You will NOW see the option to reformat as HFS+ (and other options too). By default, Disk Utility only shows Volumes.
THAT'S IT. NO TERMINAL!
Duuuude. I cant believe i stumbled on this comment. Theres no terminal i can use!! Yes!!!! Thank you
You saved the day, thank you so much.
Awesome work! I had 'upgraded' to Catalina. This caused me some unforeseen issues so I cleared the drive (disk utility in recovery mode) and then tried to install it back to Sierra. It wouldn't work as the drive was locked down to apfs. Had to do your fix via terminal in the recovery mode. This allowed me to then build back off a time machine backup I had of Sierra, which before your fix, wasn't allowing me to recover because it wasn't APFS (was HFS+). Excellent work! Thanks.
Exactly what I needed! Works with internal drives too, I can confirm. Thanks!
Bro u my savior man... Dunno how to thank u enough. Was planning to sell my Mac tomorrow. tried to reset and accidentally selected APFS. Was nervous as shit for couple of hrs not able to see Macos extended... Ur video saved me. Thank u again
Thank you so much! That saved me from having to dissemble my whole mac mini again so I could format my SSD with a hammer in frustration.
Subbed and liked, big help with a format I just did and didn't even think to check the difference between APFS and HFS
This should be on every apple support page......life saver!!!
Man this fixes my problem and you are the only one I found who got me there. Much appreciation. Have my like
No problem always enjoy to share and help out as much as I can.
I'm trying to do this with my internal drive and followed all of the steps but getting a message that reads "You must specify either an APFS Container Reference or Physical Store".
Thanks so much, really big help on going from APFS back to another type. Much appreciated.
Thanks so much...I'd been trying to solve this one for hours!
Thank you. I wasted my some hours and managed to get to your video luckily.
cool vid for us old-timer :) i hate to see that 35 persons disagree for what nobody understand..
thank you for sharing you knowledge in simple way,...God bless you!
You're an actual saviour!
All praise unto you sir
I think this is the same as going to Disk Utility and go View and show all devices, there, you can format the disk to HFS also
Thank you so muchh!!!You save the World!!!!
BRO YOU SAVED MY LIFE!!!
So many thanks!!! you saved my day! Regards
Thanks you have the best video out there on this subject.
When I attempted this, terminal responded with this message: You must specify either an APFS Container Reference or Physical Store. I typed everything in correctly as in the video AND the description to double check and it returned the same message.
I have the same problem!! Someone Help!
CHAROS Comercializadora did you find a n answer for this? Stuck on this step.
i found it so when u do it you need to put deleteContainer so u need to make the c capital
Adding sudo in the beginning works if retiricted by Sandbox Error Appears
Thank u so much i could help my sister out with her make problems
S_R
U literally saved my day. Thanks a lot
Within Disk Utility you can also go to Edit -> Delete APFS Volume
Thank you so much ! 😭
I’m locked out of my Mac because I erased it and I think I deleted a file I need to change it to Mac OS extended but it won’t give me the option to go back my Home Screen or even terminal pls help
You are a saviour!
Hi, thank you for your video. In my Mac is asking me to specify either an APFS container reference or physical store, do you know why?. I typed just like you suggested, thanks
me too what should i do
Same problem…
Or in disk utility: Partition -> choose format
Manuite thanks for this! I almost followed the directions but your simple step did the trick.
I tried but didnt work for me. it says The volume recovery on disk1s3 couldn't be mounted because it is in use by process 0 (kernel). How do i fix this
@@scantando mine says it is in use by finder process 343 (Finder)
Hello, thank you for the v ideo. But in my case, I don't see APFS, I see apple_HFS. What can I do? thank you!
Hi, i need to revert to HFS+ on my IMAC. Did everything you showed on the vid but i am having error -69888 couldn't unmount disk. By the way this is my Internal SSD. Please help TQ
OMG You save my life! Thanks dude! 🙏
LITERALLY THE BEST THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
very helpful video and easy to google
Great video. Super easy to do. Thank you
thanks... That was very helpful... Cheers
Thx Man! Saves me a lot of time!
Thank you so much!
I did exactly as you said, and the part of the disk disappeared, it doesn’t appear in disk utility anymore, I need help please, what I need to do?
Did you ever fix your problem of an invisible disk from the utility after trying to change the apfs bk to extended journal?
It didn’t t work for me it says couldn’t be unmounted because it is in use by process 343(finder) what do I do ?
You are truly my life saviour ♡
When I type in the steps an error comes up saying “not a valid target disk type for this APFS delete operation (-69600)” are you able to help me out!?
wow. may be a life saver. thanks
HI!! I did this and accidentally deleted the wrong file, what code can I enter into the terminal to recover the deleted files and undo this process
After deleting APFS container and converting back to HFS can I restore the info on the drive using a back up that was made when the drive was still APFS? Should I use a Time Machine back up or a Carbon Copy Cloner backup?
is there any way to do this without losing the content? i encrypted my external hard drive to protect it with password, it changed it from HFS to APFS and after a few days, even after inserting the password, it's not showing up on the desktop!
thank you so much, very great !
Even if you reformat it in HFS extended any os x installed beyond Sierra will be APFS by default
If anyone knows a terminal code I can enter to undo this please help!!
thank you for saving our computer :)
Thank you!
When I tried the steps, it failed with the below error message:
"The volume "Macintosh HD" on disk1s1 couldn't be unmounted because it is in use by process 0 (kernel)
Error: -69888: Couldn't unmount disk".
Can you please help?
Im sorry dude but I have no clue, I have to see the computer to get a real idea how to solve this but I found this after googling the code, hopefully this can help your problem.

BIG THANKS FOR THIS!!!!!!
exactly works thanks a lot
Thanks 😍 ! I solve my problem 🔥
Question. I was on the verge of upgrading my HDD to an SSD for my mid-2012 which is running on El Capitan (10.11.6 OS X) but is formatted to “Logical Volume OS X Extended”. Ran a diskutil list to see what exactly and its also unlocked encrypted.
Under the new SSD’s dropdown list (via DiskUtility) everything BUT Logical Volume OS X Extended appeared under formats.
I would like my new SSD to have OS X Extended (Journaled) which “is” there on the dropdown for the new SSD, but will I be running into any issues? Does my HDD have to be formatted to OS X EJ first or is it safe to format (blank) the new SSD and restore the data from the HDD even though its format is Logical Volume? Are they the same; shouldn't these match?
SOLVED.
"Logical Volume OS X Extended" = “OS X Extended (Journaled, Encrypted)”. -This unmatched wording had initially stumped me as I was told everything had to match.
For MAC OS users it is read to match verbatim. Eg: MAC OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted) [Internal] = “MAC OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted)” [external]
So I ended up running into another issue before I could restore. After it was all said and done and restoration complete, I realized that I needed to either turn off FireVault (to unencrypt) in order to choose "(Journaled)" or to choose OS X Extended (Journaled, Encrypted). I was getting an error upon restoration called,
Could not recognize “/dev(null)” as an image file.
Could not get source volume name. Operation failed.
So instead of unencrypting it I just matched "Logical Volume OS X Extended" to "OS X Extended (Journaled, Encrypted)" (Yes, this is indeed the matchup; again not read verbatim like for Mac OS users and all else after El Capitan).
But then I ran into another error:
Could not access device “/dev(null)”.
Could not validate target - No such file or directory.
Operation failed. -This was due to the fact that both HDD and SSD dropdown volumes were not UNLOCKED.
To solve this issue I had to go to > FILE and UNLOCK BOTH HDD and SDD dropdown volumes. It asked me for the password (a la FireVault). I then hit restore and it asked me again and then so restored successfully!
In short, to avoid this I should have turned off FireVault to unencrypt.
P.S. To anyone else swapping out their HDD for a SSD (non-OEM) enable TRIM. Go to terminal and input the following:
sudo trimforce enable
You'll thank me later ;)
Edu Pro No problem; welcome to the new experience of the MacBook 2012. Congrats on your upgrade.
So first, we need to determine what disk01 you have. Is it APFS Extended, APFS Extended (Journaled), APFS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted)? ...and so on and so forth.
To find out exactly, go to Terminal and type : diskutil
It should tell you what disk01 is, and whether or not it is encrypted, which it doesn’t tell you when you have it highlighted in recovery mode disk utility. Once you find out, shut it down and go to recovery mode.
Recovery mode: (skip to last paragraph if you already know how to do this):
Once shut down, hit the power button and hold down command + r until the recovery options pop up. Hit disk utility.
So the drop down list for your SSD (external), should match EXACTLY to that of the format your disk01 (HDD) was and click erase (DO NOT ERASE YOUR INTERNAL HDD). Once that’s done, click restore and it should take a while (about an hour). Let me know how it goes. Might be a few more steps depending on your exact format.
Edu Pro No, time machine being off would not effect this as you are merely cloning, not at all erasing your original drive.
Yes, your drop-down selection should then match the drive you have told me exactly; “APFS” for both. Recovery mode>Erase (format) SSD in APFS>Recovery from Macintosh HD (internal, HDD).
Then after about an hour of restoring you can check to see if everything is on your SSD by going to the Apple logo and starting up from External. Once everything looks legit, shutdown and do the hardware swap. Good luck!
Well done
welp, my Mac stopped recognizing my HDD when I plug it in.
I can still see it on Disk Utility, though.
Edit: Fixed it, but I still can't prevent the HFS drive being converted into APFA when I back up my information to it in time machine.
thank you
thanks man
Thanks!
Saved the day. Thank you!
Muchas gracias, esto me ha ayudado =)
Thanks
mine sayas permission denied,.,.please help
Thanks
What about on the main drive (Macintosh HD?)
U can do it from Recovery.
I got the blinking folder after this. Hell
Help **
Does anybody know why arrogant people from apple like to complicate things? There is no reason to remove the HFS format options in the list
Bro Thanks so much!!
Thanks.
Posting early goddamn its 2:30 am man
Its a tutorial video to help out anyone who’s seeking this information so I had it scheduled to be posted in the morning for it wouldn’t mess with anyone sub feed and unfortunately it didn’t seem to work for you. 😭
Thx bro 🙏
Thanks babe.
thank u!
No problem:)
You could have just clicked on view all hard drives and erases it regularly without using terminal.
*No ! No ! No ! No ! As usual you are showing connected apfs drives and converting them back. Easy peasy ! THAT is NOT what folks need ! How about showing us how to convert back to HFS+ the System drive (Boot Drive) AND the BACKUP PARITION, please :)*
tks guy
thx!
I wanna install steam
Thank you!
