- If you can't get an external hard drive or USB flash drive to mount when you plug it in your Mac, you usually open Disk Utilities and try from there. If that doesn't work, try this Command Line technique in the Terminal Application on Mac OS X.
Our video describing how to do it in the GUI in Disk Utility is here:

If you failed to mount the disk via command, the disk is seriously corrupted. Use iBoysoft Mac Data Recovery to recover 1GB data for free: bit.ly/3lVUhtx
Thanks for the tip! IBoysoft data recovery worked for me after I scanned the disk and let it run over night. When I opened the computer in the morning the scan had completed, but amazingly the disk had mounted properly and I managed to eject it as normal, then backed it up to another hard drive.
thanks man you saved my life
Drives mount fine under Linux/Windows 10 but not under MacOS and it is corrupted? More like something is amiss with this OS.
You prolly dont care but if you're bored like me atm then you can watch all the latest movies and series on instaflixxer. I've been streaming with my brother for the last few weeks xD
@Damon Luis yup, I've been watching on instaflixxer for since december myself =)
I am using youtube for more than 10 years and I have never written a single comment. Man, I thought I have lost 2TB of videos of the last 13 years. Thank you very much.
I seriously don’t know how to thank you.My 5TB external Drive with over 1TB of files on it wouldn’t show up. I spent over two hours watching RUclips videos and none of them worked, except this one. You’re a life savior.
Incredible! Thank you so much for putting this together. Here I was thinking I lost over 14 TB of data, and about to surrender and ask for a refund or replacement from WD, and I found your video. I followed the steps and although mine did not launch/mount automatically, I followed the advice of someone in the comments who said to wait 60-90 mins as it can take a while to rescan drive. Came back later and the drive had mounted and I have my files back! Amazing amazing amazing!
This is the only RUclips video or website that has helped me with this problem. This dude deserves a Nobel Peace Prize for this!! If this is your first time using this video, BOOKMARK IT ASAP.
Thank you for this video. I have a big promotions test that I'm studying for, and all of my study info is on my external hard drive that wouldn't mount. This video was a lifesaver! Thank you!
Like most of the comments in here, I must express my most sincere gratitude for your step by step guide. I just regained access to client video files for work that I would have otherwise lost forever. Thank you so much for the helpful guide! Cheers!
Glad it helped!
Thank you so much!! Backing up my disk!! Realized today it hasn't been backed up since February ! So grateful for this video because I really did start backing up external drive on another one (suggested by another video) and stopped because I knew there had to be another and much, much not only simpler solution but one that wouldn't take SO MUCH time having to back up and then put back on to the drive. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!! And I appreciate that everything was to the point, quick, and simple. THANK YOU again!!!!!
Worked for me with MacOS Big Sur! Initially, I got the "failed with 1" response on the command line, so wasn't thinking it worked for me. But, I waited a little, and then restarted my iMac and the Drobo drive icon mounted and was usuable. Thanks so much, so awesome you took the time and trouble to make this video!
Thanks SOOO much. In the end I just had to force quit FSCK_HFS in Activity Monitor. Worked like a charm. Your commenters saved my life! Many thanks all!
broooooo i wouldnt have fixed my EHD if it were not for this comment. thank you!
You are a legend man, thank you
Really, made my day! Thanks a lot. Just removed external drive by unplugging yesterday and since then i was struggling to connect it back, now its up again :)
You just saved my life, Bro ... I wish you the best for you and your family ... It’s been a day reading all apple discussion forum and Google until I got here ... Thanks RUclips!
This worked for me!
I had to use these commands in Terminal after doing the sequence in your tutorial:
diskutil unmountDisk /dev/disk2
diskutil eject /dev/disk2
I removed my hard drive then plugged it in after and then it worked.
Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for this video! Unfortunately, external drives seem to have gotten much more fickle, especially if accidentally disconnected. This process has helped me to mount 20+ TB (yes TB) of hard drives-one of which I thought I was gonna have to have repaired. I've liked, saved, shared, and more. Thank you!!!
I've seen there is a nfs option, which didn't work.
Well, I know this video is a few years old now, but still relevant and what a life saver. Thank you so much. I have another old external HDD that would never mount so I will try this on that as well. Thanks again!
Absolute legend! I was pulling my hair out and you've just made my life so much easier! Thank you so much
God bless u was about to get a mini heart attack when all the other methods didn’t work.
Thank you. Saved my graduation Film!
I can't thank you enough!!!! It also said resource busy for me, but I just left everything alone and the hard drive showed up about half an hour later.
Omg thank you so much! I can't believe it actually worked! Had a ton of backed up files and movies save from years of work. So happy I didn't lose all my files! 😌🙏🏻
This was the only thing that worked, thank you!
Thank you so much! I was trying to figure out when I ran across your tutorial. It worked GREAT!. Your presentation is clear and simple.
Awesome! I was able to mount my external drive by following the input on the terminal as this video guides! Time saver!
WOW!!! Thank you so much for this. I have not been able to get the drive to mount for years, and through your instructions it mounted today! Thank you!
didnt work for me last mount line says "/Volumes/usb failed with 1"
Mine said the same. I now rented the iBoysoft Data Recovery. I can see everything on the drive. I was hoping to recover my project files like libraries. Not sure until 3.6 TB of data does what ever.
Bro… did you wait about 30 to 90 mins like they said about the rescan is fixing the drive. The last method or resort would be the software he is talking about
For anyone who got “/Volumes/usb failed with 1”, just leave your drive plugged in for 30-90 minutes to see if it pops up. Catalina takes forever to rescan some hard drives after they’ve been improperly ejected, like mine. Hope this helps.
Hi. I got that exactly.../Volumes/usb failed with 1...Do you mean if I leave it plugged in for 30-90 minutes, it would eventually be mounted? Pls. Pls...
leave in for 30-90minutes!? Not very practical.
did anybody do this and it worked? pls reply
@@Elle-savedandloved nope
This is correct. It's running a repair on a corrupted volume which takes time. This "rescan", once complete, will allow the drive to resume normal operations after an hour or two, depending on the drive size.
This tip is out of this world! Saved my drive (and all the content) and showed me something I didn't know. Thank you!!!!!!!!
When I used the first command to mount, it worked perfectly! THANK YOU!
If it says resource busy you need to change "hfs" in the last command. Try to change it out to "Microsoft Basic Data".
if that doesn't work, when you type "diskutil list", then replace "hfs" in the final command with whatever is in front of the name of your hard drive.
I'm stuck right there ...
I know you posted this a year ago lol, but I followed your advice and the terminal spit this out:
usage: mount [-dfruvw] [-o options] [-t external_type] special node
mount [-adfruvw] [-t external_type]
mount [-dfruvw] special | node
Do I need to do anything else, or does this mean the disk has been mounted?
Thanks for your clear instructions! Unfortunately I'm still unable to mount my HDD external drive since upgrading to Catalina (it's the highest OS I can use on my old late 2012 mac which is still running pretty well) and wondering if there might be another limiting factor related to Time Machine backups. the HSF+ format on Catalina OS.
First off, First Aid in Disk Utility says it's fine, all good---suggesting the hard drive and data isn't corrupt (?), but I can't mount it all the same. Also, unlike you, there's no external drive/disk image icon on my desktop (or in Finder, of course), but I can see it in Disk Utility and Terminal (so I know my computer can access the external drive.) My external drive is formatted as an HSF+. (Terminal identifies it as and "HSF" but elsewhere it identifies it as HSF+ Extended Journal), which I've read Catalina is supposed to be able to mount and read/access (meaning HSF+, not HSF standard). However, I have Time Machine Backups on this drive (as well as other files) and I'm wondering if the problem has something to do with a that....From the reading-up I've done today, it seems that Catalina can't us APFA formatted drives to do Time Machine back-ups, but it may also have trouble reading HSF drives?
FIY, I ran through all our instructions in your tutorial in Terminal and all seemed to go well, save that my drive still didn't mount; I got the exact same error you got and could overlook, but in my case. the disk image icon on the desk top didn't show up anyway. (And, as I said, I can't see the external drive icon on my desktop in any case. Attempts to mount after I ran your instructions in Terminal via Disk Utility just returned the "DiskManagement.disenter error 49153", which is where my journey today started!
At this point, I might be satisfied just to be able to "read only" the file. I can sacrifice the Time Machine BUs, so long as I can can format the drive in Catalina to make new ones (sounds like there might be a conflict there) but I really need to review the rest of the files before wiping my drive clean.
Sorry for this very long comment...just found your explanation very lucid and hope you might have some insight into my problem. Cheers.
I literally never leave comments even though I always use RUclips, but I spent the last week trying to figure out what was going on with my hard drive. Ended up wiping my whole computer and getting back to the latest OS but then couldn't access my drive to get my old files. So many sites, articles, comments - and your video helped me fix it and made my computer mount my device. Thank you SO MUCH!!!!!!
You're welcome! I'm really glad it helped. Make sure you set up a TimeMachine backup. I've learned the hard way a few times and lost files when I couldn't fix problems.
This video has helped me more times than I care to admit! I recently upgraded to an M1 iMac Running Monterey. I have an external HD (Western Digital 6tb). After connecting it to my iMac upon transferring a very very small file my whole computer hung. I later read through Mac forums that Western Digital announced that it is a known issue with M1 Monterey for external drives particularly the 4tb to hang. Anyways, This process totally worked and I was able to retrieve my drive. I'd also like to note for anyone reading this - I previously tried to use diskutil and first aid as well as using terminal to unmount and mount. All things failed - but the sudo drive technique seems to always work! THANK YOU!
Thank you for the video! I tried this & got the errors that's plaguing a lot of others:
error = -1
resource busy
failed with 1
I then tried to mount using disk utility & waiting like others suggested, that didn't work either.
Lastly, I tried force quitting fsck_hfs in the activity monitor & that worked for me!
That's a great solution. Thanks for letting me know!
@@GemsbokAppleTipsandTricks Success! I also executed force quit fsck_hfs in the activity monitor and it mounted immediately.
You are a lifesaver! This did the trick!
HEY YO! I need you to tell me how to undo this?! It screwed up my hard drive and now it won’t work
I just watched, and liked, your video, “Force an External Mac Drive to Mount via Command Line Terminal Commands in Mac OS X.” It was very helpful.
I’ve tried many times to learn terminal commands on my own and via online resources, and have not had much success. Your video is one of the clearest and easy to follow explanations I’ve ever come across! Thank you very much for posting it.
Thank you SO much!!! I haven’t been able to load my external on my new Mac, and you just made it possible! Thank you again!!
Hi Gemsbok! Thanks for the tutorial! We followed everything in the video, however in the end after executing the last command to mount the harddrive to the new "usb" station, nothing happened. We got the same messages as you, but nothing happened. Do you have any suggestions what we can do?

@@LukeMaximoBell1 thank you for your reply! i had "resource busy" come up, and i looked what was infront of my hard drive and mine said "Windows_NTFS" so if anyone else has the problem, try putting that instead of HFS.
@@BeccaW I tired replacing hfs with "Windows_NTFS", i tired "Apple_HFS" I tried "Microsoft Basic Data", and they all gave me " "No such file or directory"

This actually worked. I'm in awe. Thank you!
What do I do if it says Resource busy?
Yes, mine said Resource Busy. Would be nice to get a reply on this one!
I got Resource Busy, so I used Disk Utility unsuccessfully. I followed your instructions again and this time it worked. The only difference is that I spelled Volume with a capital everywhere this time. Probably not the issue
A very big thanks

Nathan Raczkowski glad I could help! ☺️
mine does not shows on diskutil list :(
Thank you so so much! Doing this allowed my LaCie to mount and my previous file to appear. Fear that I lost my huge file averted! So once I typed in my new name for my drive, "LaCie" it then created it and then mounted the previous drive also by its original name, also "LaCie". So now "LaCie" & "LaCie 1" are present. Clicked on the original now mounted drive, success! File is back! Drive mounted. You the best!🖤🙆♀️
i can't tell you how appreciative i am for this post as it fixed my problem. The 'experts' lectured me and told me to reformat my hard drive. Thank you.

For those who is seeing this error, i've got a solution: run "diskutil list" again, and find the IDENTIFIER for your actual hard drive. Also open your Disk Utility, and look at the actual format of your disk. For example, my disk format is "ntfs", and identifier is "disk2s1". And then run "sudo mount -t ntfs /dev/disk2s1 /Volumes/usb". (Note, you need to use the correct format after -t and the path should be end with the disk identifier). This worked for me!
mount: /Volumes/usb failed with 1

apple.stackexchange.com/questions/235309/external-drive-does-not-mount-after-plug-off-without-eject
Basically the HD needs to be told to unmounted first then ejected. This is the part in the article I found that worked. Where it says /dev/disk2 you need to ensure you type what YOUR HD is called that isn't ejecting/mounting/headache. Hope this helps like it helped me.

diskutil eject /dev/disk2
