Please help, my Time Machine external drive got disconnected during backup (MacBook M2), I plug it back in and it showed up but when I click Unmount it, It won't unmount because it said something is using the drive, after a long time trying I have to click Force Unmount. Now that drive won't mount on my MacBook anymore, although it still mount on my other Windows PC using Paragon APFS for Windows. And since it's APFS Windows tool can't repair it. I tried every tutorial on youtube but nothing works.
3:18 Whoooooaaa! Thanks for that tidbit of info. I have a 5TB drive that wasn't booting but the light was blinking. I decided to wait it out and after only 10 minutes of blinking, the drive appeared in disk utility. I ran first aid and everything went back to normal. The relief I feel?....priceless.
yep, this was a GREAT tip. Did it before, but didnt know why it finally showed up, so knowing this is great for future!
This just saved me. I didn't know to wait that long while my Mac was trying to fix the issue, and I waited about 20 minutes and my 2TB external drive finally showed up and I immediately backed it up on Dropbox and I'm going to order a physical drive for a physical backup... Thank you for teaching me patience.
I'm trying to do this but getting the message about "seal is broken". Went to CCC route and it copied the drive with everything but the part that would allow it to run as a boot drive. Any suggestions?
WOW! It worked!!! I thought I'd lost 2TB of data on my La Cie external drive with no luck in Disk Utility ... but Windows on my ThinkPad fixed it. I'm eternally grateful and relieved! Thank you.

Thanks for this info. Will it work regardless of the formatting of the Mac external drive, such as APFS? When plugged into a Windows machine it will automatically ask to scan and repair?
I am running first aid (it’s taking forever) but what do you do if you don’t have a windows machine to do first aid as well?

Does this work for an APFS drive? I have this problem right now on a Glyph SSD but I'm assuming a Windows computer wouldn't read this drive to fix it since it's APFS.

How was this external drive formatted? Was it formatted Mac Extended Journaled or FAT? If it is formatted Mac Extended Journaled the fix with a Windows machine will corrupt the Mac format correct?
I noticed that the drive you used was formatted in exFat. What if the drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)? will the PC still fix it?
Personally I’ve only found the PC to fix things if it’s formatted in exFat. I had the same question as you.

hi there, what would be the next step if the windows scan and repair doesn't work? I have a 2 TB hard drive and 1 TB is used, so it probably has tons of issues compared to the drive that has only few items. I would appreciate your advice 🙏

I have an external hard drive (where I keep my files), I eject it the right way, but, EVERY TIME, I connect it again, it doesn't recognize it. I have to open the Disk Utility and wait for some minutes for it to recognize and to start using it.

what type of format was your ssd drive? I'm having the same issue with a 4tb T7. Mine is APFS, not sure it would show on windows
external portable SSD drive is not showing up on my MacBook Pro disk utility, neither on Terminal. I have used it once to transfer files and it seemed to work. It suddenly stopped transferring and my Mac went blanc. After starting it up again it didn't boot up the external drive. Any suggestions? It looks like that I physically can't open the drive.
Guys I was exporting a Final Cut Pro video (about an hour long) when my computer turned of and was not responding so I shut off my computer entirely (I was not able to properly eject the SSD) but now whenever I plug the SSD back in it won't show up and my computer freezes and the mouse turns into that spinning beach ball. What do I do!!! (I have a 2019 16 inch MacBook Pro if that changes anything).

Thanks for the vid. I also tried the windows option for my 2tb. But it was scanning over an hour so I quit it. How long should I expect for a 2tb full hdd please?
You should let it finish as it needs to (as long as it is moving). The drive is probably going bad and I would make a back up asap
What’s the best way to make a backup if you can’t mount the drive? My drive shows up on windows but it slows my whole computer down and when I try to access it’s files the tab always goes “not responding” any input?

Hi, How can I restore an unmountable drive on mac os, when disk uitlity is not working?? I dont need the data anymore, so I just need to reformat the drive so it can show up on my mac. but disk utility keeps showing an error and it wont restore/erase the drive. is there any software for this?

My external hard drive keeps freezing on my Mac while transferring files. It usually starts out smooth, and then 30 seconds to 1 minute in, it starts freezing or responding extremely slowly. What might be causing this and how do I fix it? Thanks

same here. using external ssds for sound libraries and (seperate drive) Time machine. Since I updated to the last Ventura, drives keep on disappearing and one is not showing up any more at all. Using usb Hub and direct connection to Mac Mini M1 2021. Really sucks!

Normal Windows File Explorer will not read a Mac OS Extended drive. ExFat allows Windows to read it

You would need a specific software to read APFS drives and make sure you have the password for it. This would be only if there is a minor issue with the drive and not something else

@lapfix I can only see it in Device Manager but not on pc and when it appeared, it froze my windows without showing the data size of the drive. It’s 5TB drive and we have very important data on this drive for traveling 19 countries with my parents. Can you please 🙏 help me?
What happens when first aid is greyed out? My Seagate no longer mounts since I upgrated to 13.5.2
My drive was readable but didn't show how much was unused. I ran First Aid on Disk Utiliity, it failed and now the disk is unreadable. So First Aid made things worse....now I tried Disk Drill and ran First Aid again but the drive is still unreadable even though there's no hardware failure :(

why is this happening in macs? Actually it happens VERY OFTEN to not show the disk in my air m1 mac, until i wait for at least 20 mins (for a 4tb disk). Does this has to do maybe with MBR or Guid?
Wow thanks a lot! I've been working for almost two hours on fixing that, hadn't thought fixing it with windows would work. You saved my live I had about 6 video editing jobs on that disk. Let me tell you I'm gonna do some backup on another drive now and on the cloud.

one of my my WD external drives works totally fine on Windows Bootcamp and unable to mount or read on MacOS.

My easystore external started failing on me I think because I put all my files from final cut and logic to store on it and it was too much, next time I should just keep program files to run off my internal disk.
