Oh. My. Gosh. My computer has been off for a week... factory reset it and kept getting weird errors. It finally went to install and then I got that AFPS or whatever it's called error message, and I was like, "You know WHHHHHAAAAT?!" Said a prayer and logged back into RUclips to find if SOMEONE ELSE at least experienced it. Not only did that happen, but this video helped me to FIX THE PROBLEM. I'm fixing an old pre-2014 Mac mini to use as a Unifi Cloud Key and could not figure out how to get High Sierra installed because of that APFS error. I spent 2 days on the Apple forums trying to figure it out and no one had a clear working solution. I decided to search RUclips and your video popped up. I followed someone else's system format video before selling my old MBP and the idiot stated to delete too much container data, which resulted in me being unable to reinstall the new Montary OS as it couldn't find the HD Macintosh drive. On top of it I wrongly formated my disk as APFS instead of Mac Journaled and resolve everytime I tried to reinstall the OSX is was failling with that error .. I use a Windows keyboard on a Mac. FYI - the key combinations:
CMD + OPTION + R = WINDOW + ALT + R

Amazing! Cannot thank you enough, followed the vid and it has worked, now I will be able to work again on monday. I used the same process when running into this problem with reinstalling OS Catalina, only difference was that there was a second storage area, 'Macintosh HD - Data' that I deleted as well.

Thanks so much for your work on this. I was dealing with the dreaded "The Recovery Server Cannot be Contacted" then after that was resolved this APFS message came up. I knew I was close to getting back up and running. This fix got me over the goal line. I appreciate the help.
01-05-21: This method still works. You are amazing. I almost throw away my computer
I had the same issue. However, long story short, if you are using your main drive to boot into recovery mode, sadly you won't be able to do what is shown in this video. Something has changed since this video was made (4 years ago), which means you'll need a bootable USB drive to install High Sierra, as you won't be able to wipe/partition your drive as it's being used as a 'host' to run the recovery mode / UI. The USB drive will be used as the host (use the alt key to select when you boot), and THEN you can wipe your main hard drive using Mac OS Extended (Journaled). I spent hours trying to work this out as I'm re-installing High Sierra on a 2010 Mac Pro.

Tried the Big Sur Update on my MacBook Air 2015 and failed (even restarting didn’t help and the download just wouldn’t come to an end and eventually it popped up that it failed for some unknown reason). Then I tried to reset it to the original state and deleted my Macintosh HD - at this point I though my MacBook was dead. Thank you a million times for this video - even non-computer nerds can figure this out :)

@@TheOfficialDarren there is an APFS issue. All you need to do to fix the problem is to partition the disk to MacOS Extended (Journaled.)

First of all: Thank You for the great video. I bet you've helped many people with this tutorial.
But that's not the solution of the problem. You just changed the format of the Partition to MacOS Extended.
My question is how to keep the APFS Format and install a runable system.
I have the same situation and thoroughly handle this case and still keep the format of the partition, reinstalling macos with a boot from usb.

When i clicked partition and changed the format to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), it shows:
the volume "recovery" on disk1s3 couldnt be unmounted because it is in use by process 0 (kernel.)
Couldnt unmount disk
Operation failed..

Hey Chad, I am not very familiar with your problem, but my suggestion for you is to shut down your computer after deleting the APFS drive. That way you can create a new drive with the format of Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Hope this helps. :/

Sounds like a connection issue. You might need to use an Ethernet to connect to the internet.

Found this maybe it will help you it help me you need to go to press option command and R to enter the internet good luck maybe late for you but may help someone else
The problem is that you have a virtual disk but still don't have any partition on it (disk in terms of Windows filesystem). To fix that do the following:
Go to menu Install OS X Mountain Lion -> Quit Instal OS X.
Select Disk Utility
Select your disk on the left side. If you can't find the disk, click on the button near the top left, then select the "Show all disks" option.
Select erase tab on the right side
Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Name: Give it a name
Click erase. This will create a partition on your disk drive
Quit Disk Utility and continue with installation as you did.

Simplest guaranteed SUCCESS is what this video is about! I had several fail attempts (5101f) while connecting to the Internet Recovery but kept trying and voilà it started to download and install the macOS (Yosemite for me). thank you,really works. One thing different is: mine doesn't have +/- volume button, partition is grey, erase failed all the time. I have to reboot tons of times and tried many different ways. Finally got solution, it seems go to safe mode is the solution(i'm not sure if it's safe mode or not, but it's much slower responding and black background, the installation estimate time took 2 hours while the normal one only need 6 mins), then I could follow your steps to erase and partition.
I was ready to trash my old MacBook instead of giving it to a family member, but you saved it! Thank you!
Operation failed and now it's saying i can't unlock my disk because 'a problem with the disk was detected' 👍 nailed it.
