  • Just firing up the old Stihl 090 for a quick cut. Why would I use the 090 for one single cut? Why not? It's a fun and very powerful saw to run. Sometimes after a tough day at the shop, the sound and feel of the lower rpm and high torque is just the ticket. And let's face it, a 30 lb saw in your hands makes you feel like a real man.
The Stihl 090 is a legendary chainsaw heralded as “the world’s most powerful chainsaw.” Mine was made in Germany around 1976. It’s a Stihl 090av (anti vib) 137cc and is running on 100LL (aviation 100 octane low lead fuel) with Stihl ultra oil at a 40 to 1 mix. It has 404 chain .063 full chisel round file. (Stihl 46RS) on a 36 inch Duromatic bar (large mount.)
Note: The use of this type of saw should be used with great caution due to the lack of safety features and the fact that it produces extreme quantities of testosterone and endorphins. You should always wear proper safety gear whenever using your saw.
Although demonstrated on a Stihl brand saw fans of Echo, Husqvarna, Craftsman, Worx, Rigid, Black & Decker, Poulan, Remington, Ryobi, Makita, Oregon and Homelite chainsaws can also appreciate the sweet, sweet sound of the world’s most powerful chainsaw.

I run an 090 for quite a few years felling large trees, splitting oversize logs and it was the powerhead for my portable sawmill. Great machine but av my arse. 8 hours a day on the beast and you get gorilla hands. My scone grabbers start tingling just from the memory of it.

Congrats on your purchase of an awesome saw! Every time I get to use it makes my blood pump. And yes, it is very crucial on a chainsaw to warm it up before you rev the RPM above 1/2 throttle and before you put it under a load cutting a log at full throttle. This allows all the dissimilar metals to expand to their correct tolerance and allows the oil in the fuel to coat all the moving parts. I own many saws and can run them anytime I want to, sometimes just to hear the sound and feel the power. But yet I still find myself watching new 090 videos on RUclips, lol. Best of luck with your beast of a saw!!!

Have you thought about adding captions to your videos to explain things? Like that you're letting the saw warm up, oiling it, etc.

I sold my 090 in excellent condition to my realestate agent over 10 years ago when I sold my house. I'm sorry I did now. At least I still have my 056 Magnum 2 that I used regularly many years ago.

Are you sure on the year of that saw? The anti-vibes didn't come out until the early eighties I believe.

Stihl first introduced AV technology in 1964 and the 090 series saw ran from 1968 thru 1977. Looking at the starter recoil I would say he is correct with his saw being a late 1976 model, as Stihl changed their logo in 1977.

Neither the largest or the most powerful saw made, when you start doing research on vintage saws the 090 is on the smaller side of the large saws.

Maybe production saws. I’m sure some companies made some niche big saws in small numbers, but this one had a production line and whatnot.

Can you name a saw with more cc? The 090 has 137, the next biggest I have seen is the 125 cc McColloch.

@@nathanadrian7797 He's probably talking about the pre 60s two man chainsaws that couldn't even be rotated, those had 200+ cc.

Maybe, if you can start the Mac, my uncle went broke trying to sell Macs while the Stihl dealer made good money.
