  • I may have teased this video a bit early, but it has been 90% done for 2 months while I waited to get home and finish it but bushfires, getting sick, trouble with footage, and lack of time just kept pushing it back. I am finally able to say happily that it is done and ready to enjoy.
    This is a video about an old Stihl 090 AV that I asked my Grandfather on my Mother's side to buy for my Father - Youngy -. Youngy and I talk about his experience with these saws at the beginning of a career in timbercutting that began in the 80's and continues even now 40 years on. We chat on what we know about this one, a little bit on the history of timbercutting in Queensland, and tuning a the beast.
    We were inspired to make this video after looking up these saws on youtube and finding no videos of one running to its full potential, which bothered my old man who knew what they sounded and ran like when he used them the right way all those years ago. Thus, we committed to pulling this old saw out of retirement, cleaning it up, and getting it running right to show people what a well setup 40 year old 090 can do, and we even ran it the once the way it was, which sounded pretty shit, like the other 090's on here. Even better: the bar and the half inch chain are also very very old and almost identical to what Youngy used back in the 80's.
    So enjoy a casual talk, some closeups of this grizzled saw, its first start in 10 years, and finally listen to it running wide open in Aussie hardwood singing its heart out.
    Timestamps:
    @00:00 A look at the saw
    @00:49 Youngy's experience
    @04:18 First start in 10 years
    @05:35 Talking about this particular saw
    @06:28 Start and run before the tune
    @07:49 Wide open and angry ripping
    @10:01 See ya next time
    Also, my Mother wanted me to put a note in here saying that despite my father's magic touch for making a saw run well, he met his match with a Homelite saw she once owned which took him 2 days to finally get running right.
    Have a good one and look out for the next video, whenever we get to it.

    Yep. Well that's what those saws were made for, not many others could keep up I'd say, heavy as a falling saw but perfect in that orientation.

      Glad you enjoyed it. In the future with his other saws he will also be telling his stories just like this one. Cheers.

      It really is amazing how much the old girl came to life. We were worried after all her years she might not have it in her but gee were we impressed.

    the chainsaw has a brutal rotation it seems to me that it has 10000rpm

      Youngy reckons he heard that these saws rev to 8000 rpm max. The brutal rotation is likely because of the 40 year old half inch chain that tears massive chunks of sawdust out of the billet.

    Good vid - takes some muscle to work those old saws. I had an old 051 (no chain brake) and an 076 (solid old saws) - I am interested in how the posts get ripped out of that log? Is that the finished shape (if u kept cutting till they intersect)?

      Good thing my old man knows how to wrestle one. And they sound like nice old saws for sure.
      In a billet like this one where we might get five or six posts out of it you cut only as deep as Youngy did in the video, then you drive in a wedge from one side or two from both sides and snap them out with crowbars. You are then left with the heart wood that you can use for firewood. Cheers.
