I was more of a folkie/singer-songwriter fan when they first started but have always loved ABBA. Like you said, pop perfection and really hard not to like because they never tried to be anything other than that.
What always fascinates me about this song is this 2-part chorus... "you are the dancing queen, young and sweet..." and then they top it off with "You can dance, You can jive, Having the time of your life..." Really brilliant.
Dancing Queen is like euphoria in a bottle that has just been shaken and uncorked. I think a good follow up to this would be "Voulez Vous" and "Lay all your love on me" both classic ABBA disco anthems.
They had 23+ worldhits and far more incredible great album tracks. Its timeless and transending generations and pop music as a category. remarkable for a band from a non-English speaking country without an international pop scene at the time
Guarantee at a wedding or in a club when Dancing Queen comes on the dancefloor will fill within 5 seconds. Winner Takes It All was voted the fave here across the pond but Dancing Queen has such a good vibe, just gets people up and having a good boogie!!
I was never a big Abba fan, and I wasn’t too wild about disco, but this is truly a masterpiece. No matter what kind of venue you went to on a Friday or Saturday night, sooner or later this song would play and every girl in the crowd would dance to it. It was a beautiful thing to behold. Every single one of them was a Dancing Queen for a few minutes. ❤😊
I was never a big ABBA fan of people who weren't 'big ABBA fans'. They tended to be obnoxious nay sayers, people who really needed to rethink everything they learned about music.
This is layers and layers of instruments and vocals.. and only the vocal loop spans 3 octaves. (Also note how they don't use cymbals in this one). Abba magic.
Gen X rock fan here: Abba can rock my world with almost every song. I blame/praise my parents for that. Mom is a huge Abba fan. LOL! Thanks for the share!
I was 15 and on a funny little cruise ship off Greece somewhere. At that time, everything was very Greek with little to no American influence. It was 1977. We were dressed up and headed down to the disco to drink and dance (because there was no drinking age over there then!) As we walked into the disco, this song was playing!!! We were filled with excitement and took over the dance floor! Every time I hear it, I'm 15 again!
When I think of ABBA and Dancing Queen, it's the very song that describes the mid '70s for me. Baseball Cap with the hair winging out from the sides, wide leg jeans (Brittania & San Francisco Jeans ) short sleeve shirt, with a collar. For the Gals, wide leg jeans, halter tops, long straight hair parted in the middle. Roller skating at the skating rink and Dancing Queen👍🔥💯
I still remember when I first heard this song - they performed it on TV for the very first time, during a concert for the Swedish King and his future bride (they were to get married a few days later). EVERYONE who heard it knew that this song would be a HUGE hit.
I think you need react to 'Knowing me knowing you' or 'Money money money' (Frida, the other girl, lead vocals on these songs) Love ❤ ABBA (& Love ❤️ FRIDA) See ya, guys Love ❤️ from Chile 🇨🇱😘👍
That 17 year old is just 65 now. This group is stellar. I still have the 45 of their breakout song "Waterloo." They recorded other songs before that one though. But I'd say "Dancing Queen" is their most well-known and most popular hit. It wasn't cool to like them in the 1970s. But most of us were secret fans anyway.
Oh I wouldn't say that it wasn't cool to like them. I was a hard rock fan in the 70's growing up and had several ABBA tapes. No one complained when I played them.
ABBA’s music never fails to put a smile on your face. You’re probably right when you mention they have a ‘feel good vibe’ because many of their songs make you feel that way. Frida and Agnetha are great singers on their own and when they sing together it’s just pure magic. Many agree they ARE what make the ABBA sound. You’ve listened to a couple songs with Agnetha as lead so I suggest listening to one of Frida’s like “Super Trouper” or “Money, Money, Money” next. 😁
This song, and ABBA in general, represents pure joy 😊 Such a simple and memorable melody, yet so musically sophisticated. Summer Night City is another one that sounds amazing!
Yes Guys!!!! More ABBA more ABBA please!! Dancing Queen its my favorite song from ABBA, it has some of magic, now react to MAMMA MIA! all their songs are great!
So good to see the dancing queen, young and sweet, only seventeen, sat there enjoying the song as much as the rest of us. OK guys, an ABBA recommendation for you, something very different than the usual stuff; The Day Before You Came.
These different instruments coming in and out during the verses is because Benny has repeatedly said that there must not be empty parts in a pop song. If there are parts where there are no vocals than something else has to be there. If you listen to ABBA, you’ll find that every gap without vocals there is something else is going on. And that makes their songs sound so tight.
Back in 1976, ABBA performed their song “Dancing Queen” on the eve of King Carl Gustav and Queen Silvia’s royal wedding at a televised gala held at Stockholm’s Royal Swedish Opera.
Growing up as a teenager in the 70's I was pretty much a heavy metal/hard rock fan. My 8 track tape collection was pretty extensive, but had some Eagles, Supertramp, America, other lighter artists in the mix....but also had a few ABBA tapes and wore those out as much as any of the rest. And none of my fellow metal heads ever complained when I played them. Back in those days out in the country we would have parties in garages and barns or just in the house, and when ABBA was played it was pretty much dance time.
Dancing Queen maybe is their most popular song but 'Fernando' is their best selling single with more than 10 million pieces sold. As you didn't react to a song with Frida in lead until now I recommend this one for the next reaction.
yes actually Fernando sold 6 millioin copies in the '70s and in total , over 10 millions ever after.DQ remains more popular cause it's greatly danceble and also USA topper. Both songs are diamonds anyway.Blueprints of a whole decade.
Never was a Disco fan but this song is so strong and it was a top hit in Australia especially. The Piano is the backbone. Hope you can add "Lay All Your Love" and "Mama Mia" to your list sometime.
so many are fabulous, like 'Eagle' 'Head Over Heals' 'Angel Eyes' and (I think I said on your last Abba post) 'The Day Before You Came'... 'I Have a Dream' Thank you for the Music' 'The Name of The Game' 'Cassandra' 'One of us' (personal fave)... list is endless but not all have official videos on RUclips xo
That must be universal voice especially two ladies sing together. I feel like some scientific analysis to be needed why so comfortable and attractive it is. (Is my English okay?? 🤣
Please please please do a Double Live React of them singing Does Your Mother Know/Hole In Your Soul Live at Wembley. The transition between the two songs is incredible and is one of their best live performances.
Other suggestions with ABBA; Knowing me, knowing you I’ve been waiting for you Happy new year When all is Said and Done Me and I Lay all your love on me Waterloo The day before you came SOS Why did it have to be me The name of the game Cassandra And of course songs from ther latest album voyage from 2021; I still have faith in you I can be that woman Don’t shut med down The list can go on and on and on☺️ Hope you’ll keep reacting to this amazing group!
You should check out their performace of this at the Swedish Opera where everyone is dressed up in front of the King and his future Queen. As mentioned by others, 🎵Lay All Your Love on Me 🎵would be a great one to do also.
Check out knowing me knowing you. It's still upbeat even though it's about them splitting up. You get to hear the redhead singing a little instead of mainly the blonde lady. Really enjoying your ABBA reactions.
ABBA é maravilhoso. Atemporal.
"Ever since I moved to Sydney, I haven't listened to one ABBA song. Because my life's as good as an ABBA song. It's as good as Dancing Queen." - Muriel's Wedding.
Great review (and great dancing Sam) ... ABBA have more hits and excellent tracks than you can " shake a stick at " ... more please, when you get chance
ABBA were huge in Australia & we were one of the first countries to embrace them. They were popular right across the age spectrum with grandmothers taking their grandchildren to concerts. A lot of people felt it was not cool to be an ABBA fan & would deny liking their music despite having an ABBA record collection hidden at the back of their "cool" albums.
a separate comment, to answer your questions about which or which are the most popular or recognized songs of ABBA It is difficult to give an exact parameter, because this varies according to the place and the time. E.g. "Fernando" is their biggest hit in Australia, while "Chiquitita" is in Latin America I think for history "Waterloo" for being the winner of Eurovision "Dancing Queen" for their worldwide success "Thank you for the music" for being an anthem and after ABBA breakup in 1982, in the 90s "Mamma Mia" stands out for the movies and musicals and in the new millennium "Gimme gimme gimme (a man after midnight) by Madonna's sample on her hit "Hung Up" and "The winner takes it all" voted by the brits as their best song I hope you continue like this with your reactions to ABBA's songs, you are very entertaining and make a great musical analysis, and they complement each other very well and how you talked about doing reactions to ABBA live (there are fantastic performances of their tours filmed in Australia 1977 and London 1979) It would be nice if you started with ABBA's victory in Eurovision 1974 with Their iconic "Waterloo" that performance in full competition against 16 other songs from Europe is historic, where the legend of ABBA is born I send you a big hug from Buenos Aires Argentina South America
This song is easily in the top 5 disco songs of all time quite possibly number one next to staying alive and Saturday night fever long story short this song. Made them a whole lot money
Such a fabulous track,I am a rocker at heart but still love this. Really enjoy seeing the beautiful Samantha enjoying music so much, such a lovely smile and great moves ❤
Imo the best well-known ABBA song. Check out the youtube video of them playing this live in Australia. - Fabulous. Howver, lookout "Slipping through my fingers" for, what I think is the best song. Very melancholic for anyone that has kids.
An absolute masterpiece -it ebbs, flows and crowns at the right point, and collapses in just the right way. It's an exceptional piece of work, and one of ABBA's greatest songs. Of course, they have plenty more.
Tis is a pop masterpiece. I have heard this and seen this played many times in dance halls many years after it came out. I wouldn't know Mama Mia if it hit me in the head. This is by far their biggest song.
When it came out I was 16 left school, hot summer and it was perfect to fit my mood, as soon as the song starts it's like being swept away on a wave of a feel good perfect emotion, their best song imo.
The instrumentation is so good, always love the piano or electric piano that Benny played, always attracted me when I lisent Abba music, love the harmonies and love when both women sing together, both are great singers but that unique sound of both voices is an Abba sound. And I love that the autfits are totaly 70s, and their looks too, Benny and Bjørn hair
ABBA is one of those groups where it don’t really matter if you listen to a live or studio version, their live stuff is as good as any of the studio recordings
This band was such a hit machine, everything they touched turned to platinum.
Even rockheads like me will admit ABBA were pop perfection.
I was a rockhead in the 70s but ABBA was my pop exception. I loved them.
I agree with you 100%.
Me too (Rocker)
I was more of a folkie/singer-songwriter fan when they first started but have always loved ABBA. Like you said, pop perfection and really hard not to like because they never tried to be anything other than that.
They are many a person's guilty pleasure!
If you remember how you felt listening to the music when you were coming of age, this is how we felt about this music in the 70s
I just turned 12 when the song was playing non-stop on the radio, in Canada, so, yes, I know what you mean. It was so grown up, I wanted to be 17 😂😂
I was 17 when this song came out.
Remember hearing this on transistor am radio when I was 13 for the first time. It sounded magical.
I relate to this but in a gay way
I was 15 when this came out in UK. So happy that I’ve lived through decades of different music, especially 80s. ❤
These 2 girls are some of the top vocalists of all time....if this song doesn't make you want to get up and dance...nothing will...and I'm a metal fan
I wouldn't say that. It's just their voices fit together. When voices fit it's magical.
@larrylindgren9484 they were both stars in their own right before abba
It is a perfect pop song. I’ve heard it literally hundreds of times and still love it.
This hit song is considered their masterpiece...classic, infectious, timeless, and a staple at any wedding reception.
What always fascinates me about this song is this 2-part chorus... "you are the dancing queen, young and sweet..." and then they top it off with "You can dance, You can jive, Having the time of your life..." Really brilliant.
As a 62 year old grandpa, have to admit this is one of my favorite songs from the 70's.
Dancing Queen is like euphoria in a bottle that has just been shaken and uncorked.
I think a good follow up to this would be "Voulez Vous" and "Lay all your love on me" both classic ABBA disco anthems.
This song IS like euphoria in a bottle! Well said!
Fab description!
Yes, Voulez Vous is my go-to ABBA song, I just love that song so much!
An awesome era where songs were about feelings and love and fun.
This song brings me to tears every time it's so uplifting. Every section is amazing.
The quintessential pop song.
'ABBA? I'm a BIG fan! I always was'.
- Gene Simmons, KISS 😛😜😝
They had 23+ worldhits and far more incredible great album tracks. Its timeless and transending generations and pop music as a category. remarkable for a band from a non-English speaking country without an international pop scene at the time
They had about 70 singles who reach number one in different countrys
Guarantee at a wedding or in a club when Dancing Queen comes on the dancefloor will fill within 5 seconds. Winner Takes It All was voted the fave here across the pond but Dancing Queen has such a good vibe, just gets people up and having a good boogie!!

@@keithbrown7685, until you realize that Abba was the Taylor Swift of that era.
Their live performances is sick! I will suggest "does your mother know/hole in your soul" and also "summer night city"
You can never do too much ABBA. Always love hearing what younger generations think about them.
Ok i may kneel before you dear rocker for admitting this.Give my regards to your special Mom!
Benny Anderson and Bjorn Ulvaeus were two of the finest pop craftsmen of all time. Infectious creativity almost every time.
Maybe the greatest popsong of all time. Superb reaction again from you. Keep on with your ABBA-reactions and greetings from sweden

I think you need react to
'Knowing me knowing you' or

Love ❤ ABBA (& Love ❤️ FRIDA)
See ya, guys
Love ❤️ from Chile 🇨🇱😘👍
This song was all over the radio after 1976 release, you heard it everywhere, great music, great times!
I keep thinking about that too. Those little girls dancing in the video are in their 60s too.
Oh I wouldn't say that it wasn't cool to like them. I was a hard rock fan in the 70's growing up and had several ABBA tapes. No one complained when I played them.
@@montylc2001 That was your experience.
Gimmie, gimme, gimmie is a real disco epic too and one of ABBAs top hits.
Timeless music. So many hits, greetings from abba country Sweden 🇸🇪

Summer Night City is crazy good
A lot more sounds wonderful.ABBA FOREVER 🐈⬛🐈♥️♥️♥️♥️
"The Name of the Game" is the goat of pop tunes. One of their very best.
Dancing Queen is their most popular song. Only one to hit #1 in the U.S. Iconic pop song with a genius mix of happy/melancholy.
Yes Guys!!!! More ABBA more ABBA please!! Dancing Queen its my favorite song from ABBA, it has some of magic, now react to MAMMA MIA! all their songs are great!
even today in 2023, this song plays in any friday night at clubs in Sweden, and EVERYONE dances
Saw ABBA live at Wembley Arena back in 1979, if you watch the video of the concert (RUclips) I'm in the front row, age 26 now pushing 71. Good times.
This was popular when I was a kid. Many years ago my Mom and I went to the play musical Mama Mia and it featured all of Abba's music. It was great.
So good to see the dancing queen, young and sweet, only seventeen, sat there enjoying the song as much as the rest of us.
OK guys, an ABBA recommendation for you, something very different than the usual stuff;
The Day Before You Came.
they were so damn good!
These different instruments coming in and out during the verses is because Benny has repeatedly said that there must not be empty parts in a pop song. And that makes their songs sound so tight.
Love watching you two ABBA is still one of groups I still love hearing it’s been 40 years
Released in August 1976 and still sounds superb today.
Back in 1976, ABBA performed their song “Dancing Queen” on the eve of King Carl Gustav and Queen Silvia’s royal wedding at a televised gala held at Stockholm’s Royal Swedish Opera.
Growing up as a teenager in the 70's I was pretty much a heavy metal/hard rock fan. my three favorite Abba songs are Waterloo, S.O.S, & Knowing me knowing you you should hear these
Dancing Queen maybe is their most popular song but 'Fernando' is their best selling single with more than 10 million pieces sold. As you didn't react to a song with Frida in lead until now I recommend this one for the next reaction.

One of my favourites!
Play this at ANY club, Disco, or anywhere and you’ll get people up dancing. Masterpiece
Once more of Abba... Gimme gimme gimme.
I am a huge ABBA fan and my favorite is S.O.S. I love the piano in that one as well. They are timeless.
This was so crazy popular! Love Dancing Queen! ❤❤
My favourite ABBA's song. I LOVE IT! Great reaction, guys!
Can,t beat abba lost my mate a few years back he had abba at his funeral, kept that quite 😂😂😂😂😂
Never was a Disco fan but this song is so strong and it was a top hit in Australia especially. The Piano is the backbone. Hope you can add "Lay All Your Love" and "Mama Mia" to your list sometime.
It was a top hit over the whole world Any given time around the world this song is played 24/7
Fantastic like an ABBA symphony
The reproduced it live perfectly. They had a huge back up band and background singers.
This was my first ABBA single I bought as a kid.
When I was over seas girls alway danced together back in the 70S
I came for the Abba, stayed for everything else. Thanks for the vid, you guys are great. 😊
so many are fabulous, like 'Eagle' 'Head Over Heals' 'Angel Eyes' and (I think I said on your last Abba post) 'The Day Before You Came'... 'I Have a Dream' Thank you for the Music' 'The Name of The Game' 'Cassandra' 'One of us' (personal fave)... list is endless but not all have official videos on RUclips xo
My fav ABBA song is The Name of The Game. Try that one time. Cheers.
Sam, as you’ve seen the musical and movie you’ve been introduced to 20+ ABBA songs. FYI
That must be universal voice especially two ladies sing together. I feel like some scientific analysis to be needed why so comfortable and attractive it is. (Is my English okay?? 🤣
I hope you will check out some of ABBA's more polished, non-disco, hits - Chiquitita and Fernando are two masterpieces of sound!
One of the greatest musical compositions of the twentieth-century.
Fight me 😅
Said as one whose last few live shows were Korn, Tool and Korn.😉
So smart for doing studio version for first listen ... almost always the best choice. The smile on your faces says it all.
"Having the time of your life" -- kinda says it all!
Thank you for reacting to this song. It brought back memories to me dancing in my house back in the day.
Please please please do a Double Live React of them singing Does Your Mother Know/Hole In Your Soul Live at Wembley. The transition between the two songs is incredible and is one of their best live performances.
This is my absolute favorite. It's my ringtone
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Other suggestions with ABBA;

The list can go on and on and on☺️ Hope you’ll keep reacting to this amazing group!
Bueno, quiero que sepan que me suscribi a su canal sólo porque vi que están reaccionando a lasm canciones de Abba. Es más, son los únicos videos que vi por ahora 😅.

Can I just say; the guy Reviewing the Song has a REALLY nice smile that makes me feel good! 🙂
Unusual arrangement with the chorus right at the beginning of the song.
You should check out their performace of this at the Swedish Opera where everyone is dressed up in front of the King and his future Queen. As mentioned by others, 🎵Lay All Your Love on Me 🎵would be a great one to do also.
And listening to these two songbirds singing without autotune. It sounds SO much better than most.
Friday nights and the lights are low, lookin' for a place to go.......our weekends every week.
Dancing Queen was the number one here in the USA for two weeks
Crazy this was your first time. They play this at the clubs and bars in my town all the time
Check out knowing me knowing you. It's still upbeat even though it's about them splitting up. You get to hear the redhead singing a little instead of mainly the blonde lady. Really enjoying your ABBA reactions.

The Great thing about ABBA OS that their songs were very different and complex and layered.
Pete Townshend from The Who calls the ABBA song "SOS" the greatest pop song ever written.
Even though you are sitting down you just can't resist this song and dance in your seat!!!!!
Summer of 1976 the whole of europe was dancing to this song❤❤
a separate comment, to answer your questions about which or which are the most popular or recognized songs of ABBA
It is difficult to give an exact parameter, because this varies according to the place and the time.
E.g. "Fernando" is their biggest hit in Australia, while "Chiquitita" is in Latin America
I think for history
"Waterloo" for being the winner of Eurovision
"Dancing Queen" for their worldwide success
"Thank you for the music" for being an anthem
and after ABBA breakup in 1982,
in the 90s "Mamma Mia" stands out for the movies and musicals
and in the new millennium
"Gimme gimme gimme (a man after midnight) by Madonna's sample on her hit "Hung Up"
and "The winner takes it all"
voted by the brits as their best song
I hope you continue like this with your reactions to ABBA's songs, you are very entertaining and make a great musical analysis, and they complement each other very well
and how you talked about doing reactions to ABBA live (there are fantastic performances of their tours filmed in Australia 1977 and London 1979)
It would be nice if you started with ABBA's victory in Eurovision 1974 with Their iconic "Waterloo"
that performance in full competition against 16 other songs from Europe is historic, where the legend of ABBA is born
I send you a big hug from
Buenos Aires Argentina
South America
Next time try their song "Eagle"....
Great song my favourite
This song is easily in the top 5 disco songs of all time quite possibly number one next to staying alive and Saturday night fever long story short this song. Made them a whole lot money

I think it’s time for you to listen to the mamas and the papas…the harmonies are unbelievable. I promise you will not be disappointed.
Yesyesyesyesyes !!!!! ❤😊THIS ONE IS MY PERSONAL FAVORITE ❤️ 😊
The instrumentation is so good, always love the piano or electric piano that Benny played, always attracted me when I lisent Abba music, love the harmonies and love when both women sing together, both are great singers but that unique sound of both voices is an Abba sound.
