My wife (Thai) learned English for the sole purpose of understanding the lyrics of this song. It was a mega-hit in Thailand. And now she is a Swedish citizen 😊
Joey Tempest, the singer, still sounds great. I saw them live 5 times in the last 10 years at Rockfestivals over here in Belgium. Over the years they've created a more bluesy sound, but they will be forever linked to 'The Final Countdown'. Great Live-band!
I saw them live in Stockholm at midnight on new years eve 1999. They did the countdown to 2000 with this song timed to midnight. It was such a once-in-a-lifetime experience with over a hundrethousand people rocking and singing along to this song. This song never gets old.
They were another glam metal band that became successful in 1985. with this album title track.Songs ""Rock The Night" "Cherokee" Their ballad"Carrie" all 80's glam bands had to write & record one or more.
Maybe its just me but the vocals sound echoey and layered ( i dont really have the correct terms to describe them) and i really enjoy that, so i cant imagine how immersive it sounds in a sports stadium.
The 80s. The energy, the music, the soft glow of our lighters, the laid back feel in society. This song also captures the times but is also endless in composition and appeal. Amazing history. Glad you came across the original band .
Europe is still around with good material. Much more than that glam mtv style. They are entertaining and have excellent musicianship. Check Scream Of Anger and War Of Kings.
This group is from Sweden. I have fallen in love with the Swedes and keep up with most of them. I started out with Sabaton who sing great songs about different wars. Then I've gotten completely enamored with Tommy Johansson who has a truly amazing voice and can play the guitar like no other. And then there's Erik Gronwald. The Swedes are amazing! 😊❤

There is not a person alive today that was around in the 80s that doesn't know this song. It's that big! And if you were a teenager like me at the time, this song is embedded in our brains forever!
Saw them in 2004, they delivered a live gig that was of higher quality than most 70s 80s bands that I've seen in the past 24 years. Some oldtimers just don't know how to stop touring even when their vocalist sounds worse than horrible and other flaws due to old age after lives where significant chunk of years spent of alcohol/drug filled touring..
This intro is played at many sporting events around the world, so also in the US, especially at basketball I want to remember, right? Rock in Europe is huge in the 80 and 90
@@L.Nilsson For several years, it played at Cleveland Indians games. Top of the ninth, two outs, Tribe on top. It was a signal to the opposing team that they were about to lose. 😅👍
This song is SO 1986, it just oozes the 80's sound. MTV at its absolute peak, pop/rock music was incredible - so many good artists and songs. I was in my late 20's and would turn on MTV every night after work and take it all in. Good times!
Europe was formed in the late 70's in Sweden by singer Joey Tempest (real name Rolf Magnus Joakim Larsson) and released their debut album 'Europe' in 1983 after winning a contest for a record deal... It was followed by 'Wings of tomorrow' in 1984 w/ John Norum (guitar), John Leven (bass) and Tony Reno (drums)... They did well in Sweden, so Europe was signed internationally by 1986. 'The Final Countdown' was Europe's international debut in 1986, the single breaking big internationally and the album sold 3x platinum in the US w/ Mic Michaeli (keyboards) and Ian Haughland (drums) added to the line-up... The 80's arena rock sound made Europe a sensation w/ hit singles - 'Rock the night'... the ballad 'Carrie'... 'Cherokee'... 🤘🤘🔥🔥However, guitarist John Norum left the band complaining about Europe's commercial sound and Kee Marcello (guitar) did the tour and joined the band... Joey Tempest became famous for his high octave vocal performances and one of the best 80's singers. Unfortunately, the world expected a 'Final Countdown Pt. 2'... and that didn't happen; it was impossible to follow up the success of 'The Final Countdown'... Europe released 4th album 'Out of this world' in 1988 and although it sold platinum in the US, none of the singles had the same impact - 'Superstitious' ... the ballad 'Open your heart' (re-recorded from 'Wings of tomorrow') ... 'Let the good times rock'... Europe were planning a huge US tour in 1989 after touring the world but when the time came, the album had dropped off and the tour never happened. Europe tried again w/ 5th album 'Prisoners in Paradise' in 1991... but 90's grunge/ alternative rock decimated their popularity by 1992 and Europe split up that year. The band did reunite to play New Years Eve 2000... but Europe finally reunited in 2004 w/ the 'Final Countdown' line-up (Tempest/ Norum/ Leven/ Michaeli/ Haughland) releasing the album 'Start from the dark'... Europe has toured since and released several studio albums but they are still in demand mainly for their 80's albums. They only got to tour N. America once in the last 2 decades.
I saw Europe live in 2004 at Sweden Rock Festival, was a great reunion tour concert! Never seen them after that, but I hear they can still deliver live. More than I can say about acts like Mötley Crue / Guns N Roses and many other 70s 80s hard rock/heavy metal oldtimer bands I've seen in the past 15 years.
I also recommend you guys to listen to these songs with Europe: [Scream of Anger, Rock the Night, Carrie, Cherokee, Danger On the Track,] Superstitious, Open Your Heart, Let the Good Times Rock , More Than Meets the Eye, I'll Cry For You, Bad Blood, Talk to Me, Seventh Sign, Halfway to Heaven, Got Your Mind in the Gutter, Prisoners in Paradise, In The Future To Come and at last Seven Doors Hotel, there is so many but atleast the first five songs
Though I was not a huge fan of Europe I liked this song a lot and cranked it up loud. As some others said I hope the person who sampled this gave credit where credit was due.
Never forget the first time we got to see the music video for the first time at a friends house. We got it from a cousin working at a TV store and taped it for us. So lucky we were.
The singer (Joey Tempest a.k.a. Rolf Magnus Joakim Larsson) came to the music instrument store where I was working in the late 80's. He was wearing a baseball cap, big sunglasses and had a beard. He bought a guitartuner and said thanks and goodbye. I thought he looked familiar when my mate tapped me on the shoulder and said "did you see who that customer was ?" Apparently he was walking around town being followed by fans. Helsingor, Denmark around 1987.
It’s weird when you talk about different “versions” of songs. You have “The Final Countdown” by the band that WROTE and composed the song, Europe, and you have covers. I’m not a fan of covers. Those are for people that can’t write their own music. 😂 You ask “Did you like this version “, about the ORIGINAL SONG AS COMPOSED BY THE ARTIST. They made THEIR SONG exactly what they wanted it to be. That’s where the “art” in artist comes in. Theirs isn’t a “version” it is THE ORIGINAL! 😂
Hey bro, because you would like to get picky. Here's the definition of the word "version" - a particular form of something differing in certain respects from an earlier form or other forms of the same type of thing.
You know, many times artists release updated VERSIONS of their own songs. Remasters, remixes, acoustic, guest appearances etc. What are they if not VERSIONS of the same song just like covers are? It's fine to not like covers but to say there are no versions is ridiculous. Metallica, arguably of the largest and most successful metal band ever, has covered an Elton John song - they now can't write their own music anymore? Ridiculous take.
I'm not a fan of covers either because there's only 1 original. A cover is for tribute, not, " we can do it better." I think whitney houston is the only one to do a " cover" better than the original Dolly.
It has a kind of sadness. It is very strong when you have this kind of happy and energy song that still in the undertone is kind of melancholic. They are leaving earth after all.
Yeah, agreed. Melancholy is a common trait in Swedish arts since forever. Especially in music and literature. ABBA is a great example of that, even their upbeat happy sounding songs often carry a lot of melancholy in the writing and production
So nice to see the reaction! That song is full of hope and energy, very addictive. Joey was only 23 years old at that time. Check out their Ready or Not, the live version from 1990 show in Chile Festival del Vina was one of my favorite performances, and on my work out list. That whole concert is pure adrenaline. But their later stuff is great too. Check out Walk the Earth and War of Kings, very different style. After 40 years Joey’s voice is now deeper and more structured, but still phenomenal
Part of that is being young and innocent though, but I get what you mean. This was released 2 years before I was born personally :) Heard it tons still obviously.
It think that depends on where you lived. Here in Europe we were pretty scared about what happened in Chernobyl exactly one month earlier. So I can't say, we felt so much optimism.
@@strogaa For me it always gave me the feeling of get it over with "Let's play Global Thermonuclear War" - WarGames. I know it wasn't what the song was about, but that feeling of trying to live to the max expecting it to end any minute now. Good times. 12 years old at the time living in the Netherlands. There was a dutch song with that exact sentiment a few years before (Doe Maar de bom/the bomb 1982 or 1983), And then 1989 the fall of the Berlin Wall and a next few years after that until the USSR fell apart changed everything. The good times where ending and it was time to grow up and plan for a future.
Great memories come out again...☝️🤩this song mostly came at the end of their great concerts or as a train, we totally freaked out.🤸 this song will always be present and used as some anthem.❤️🔥☝️ only we were jealous of her beautiful hair...😂
This was one of the great songs I recorded back in the days on my fathers cassette recorder directly from live radio…including some part of an ad and the voice of the DJ 😎🤟🏼
Damn. Can't believe you've never heard of Europe - The Final Countdown. This song is legendary across the globe. The first time i heard it was when i was a kid. My two half brothers and my half sister were partying a lot and 80's - 90's music was part of it. All 3 also played guitar that i never learned to play for some reason. Guess i didn't even try. Thinking about it though. Turning 39 is not too old to still learn some guitar, right? Damn, i'm getting old. There is also a guy called Dan Vasc who covers different songs and this one is also one of them! You guy should sub if you can!
I was 15 when this song came out and it totally dominated not only the U.S. and Canada but most of the world as well. An 80's staple for sure. BTW- I think one of your weaknesses is actually one of your strengths: the fact that you are unfamiliar with so many bands/artists means that you have that much more material you can react to for the first time. You guys do a great job and one of the things I appreciate is that you are both honest about not liking certain things- parts of songs or arrangements. It makes it more real, and meaningful when you guys really like something/someone.
I saw them live in Sweden in 1986 and '89, but then moved on and discovered The Cure, The Smiths, Depeche Mode, Bowie, Oasis, Blur, Radiohead etc. This is one of those songs that will still be played after its composer (Joey Tempest) is gone, though. A classic!
Over here in England this song is played in packed out pubs, and bars on New Year's Eve, about four minutes to midnight, every New Year's Eve, a New Year's Eve anthem
This was right in the heart of my teen years. I was 14 when this came out and 15 yrs old with the rest of the hits off the album were released. I bought this album and the 2nd album. Lots of hits just off those 2 albums. My fav song is probably "Superstitious"
The Final Countdown is the third studio album by the Swedish rock band Europe. Released on 26 May 1986 through Epic Records, the album was a huge commercial success selling over 15 million copies worldwide.
They are still playing together after more than 40 years, touring the globe. Great live band ive seen them many times over the years, never been disapointed. Joeys voice is not as high pitch anymore but he still delivers Great vocals at the age of 61. This band has so many unforgetible songs. Check out a song called tomorrow its a ballad. It really shows joeys vocal range.
This was a smash hit in the late '80s world wide and turned Europe into superstars. After a while the success began fading out and this song did the same and the band split up eventually. Then when the turn of the century was approaching someone thought it would be cool to have Europe playing this song on midninght when 1999 becomes 2000! Rumours began to spread saying they would indeed reunite at new years eve 1999. Still it wasn't certain for real there were still some like hesistations but eventually the band did comfirm their comeback and this song kinda had a revival.
A group from the same era that you should check is Asia. In particuluar, the songs Only Time Will Tell, Without You (a greatly underappreciated song, one of their best), and Wildest Dreams. Their most populat song though is Heat Of The Moment.
Interesting that you never heard that riff Europe was one of the biggest band. They were huge in USA and those song played a lot. But still great reaction. A big band from Upplands Väsby a small town outside of Stockholm in Sweden❤❤❤
This song played live on 31 december 1999 to January 1 2000...on the Century change... 7 millions euros cost Europe come back and do a show...One night 😊😊
Their biggest hit. They have made so much harder music. Early songs like Stormvind, Wings Of Tomorrow and later songs line The Getaway Plan and War Of Kings. Guitarist John Norum left for some years and released solo albums. Check out Eternal Flame. Phenomenal guitar.
Only two hits, but if that's all you get it might as well be cool like this one. I can't believe they didn't get more love. This song is great for the Fourth of July "fireworks finale".🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩

Rock the night.... One of their best songs.
Joey Tempest is incredible! Need to check out Rock The Night. It kinda got people excited about Hard Rock Cafe
John Norum is a great guitarist.
Cherokee, Rock the Night, Carrie so good in 'my day' :)
GREAT song MAGIC 80 Europe AMAZING band......
I was 12 when this came out. Looking back, it seemed such an optimistic time. We felt sure the future was gonna be amazing. Sigh ... :P
Part of that is being young and innocent though, but I get what you mean.
This was released 2 years before I was born personally :)
Heard it tons still obviously.
Man were we wrong!!!!! We got the good stuff and didn't quite understand this.
EUROPE :D one of my first rock band at my teenager years.
Awesome song by Europe yay, still touring today yeah, good review by u guys 👌😆✌️
Great memories come out again...☝️🤩this song mostly came at the end of their great concerts or as a train, we totally freaked out.🤸 this song will always be present and used as some anthem.❤️🔥☝️ only we were jealous of her beautiful hair...😂
Europe, A top rate Swedish Rock band.
70s 80s 90s yea we have had the great music from ronnie james dio to europe
I saw them in 1983 in Tidaholm and 2024 in Huskvarna .They are still rocking.
This song and Rock the night are my favorites of Europe
Glad y'all did the official video...best way to do any 80s tune😎🤘
A classic!
Thank the universe I grew up in the 80's! Man 'O Man! What an era!
I remember listening to this in the 80’s when I was 7. Still a great song and holds up
Over here in England this song is played in packed out pubs, and bars on New Year's Eve, about four minutes to midnight, every New Year's Eve, a New Year's Eve anthem
sweden forever:) im a proud swede and europe was the thing back in the day ...when i was young:)
Lead guitarist also did a stint in Dokken. Love that you did this! More 80s please!!! Great reaction as always! CHEERS! 🍻👏🤟
If I remember correct this was the most played song at new year eve 1999, because of the Y2k fear.
This was right in the heart of my teen years. I was 14 when this came out and 15 yrs old with the rest of the hits off the album were released. I bought this album and the 2nd album. Lots of hits just off those 2 albums. My fav song is probably "Superstitious"
Europe Open your heart
Like Roxette after that, Sabaton etc, Sweden bands
The Final Countdown is the third studio album by the Swedish rock band Europe. Released on 26 May 1986 through Epic Records, the album was a huge commercial success selling over 15 million copies worldwide.
this was a worlwide hit from Sweden, it made the band known everywhere. The album sold more copies than lots of so called pop legends from the 80's
Seen/heard them in Norway. Love those neighbors.
You should also listen to their "Almost Unplugged" version of this song. It's so relaxing!
It just doesn't get much more "Awesome 80s" than this!
I can add another swedish hit that made it to the top of the US chart, in 1974: Hooked on a Feeling feat. Blue Swede.
Never seen such serious faces listening to this epic song!!
For my entire life this was the song played Sylvester shortly before midnight. On every party, on TV, always. Greetings from Germany
You should listen to Rock the Night, Cherokee, and Lights & Shadows by them ! xx
Severeral other comments say they are still playing to this day and have new good songs too
@@staffan144 Yes they're still together so to speak and performing/playing and making new songs.
I was in a band in my college years. Because we had a great keyboardist, this was the first song we ever played in a performance.
A group from the same era that you should check is Asia. In particuluar, the songs Only Time Will Tell, Without You (a greatly underappreciated song, one of their best), and Wildest Dreams. Their most populat song though is Heat Of The Moment.
Loved it then & love it now!
It is their song!!! Its their version. Og
Interesting that you never heard that riff Europe was one of the biggest band. They were huge in USA and those song played a lot. But still great reaction. A big band from Upplands Väsby a small town outside of Stockholm in Sweden❤❤❤
Cherokee is great from them too and prisoners in paradise
80's music was the best uncle every kid could have while growing up.
Yout need to react to "Carrie" by Europe! A relly good rock ballad!
I’m gonna show how old I am now the top of the building had Europe 86 so I was six years old when they did that show
