These song was recorded in July 1980, one month after the legal divorce, but more than a year and a half after their separation as a couple.

Truly great song that touches so many people who experience break ups and what a vocal performance...there's a story that Bjorn wrote the lyrics after hitting a bottle of something strong then went to the studios and laid down the backing tracks and asked Agnetha to come in and sing over the arrangement. Obviously considering the two marriages were breaking down the guys in the recording studio were anxious for her and whether she would get through it. Agnetha nailed the song and looked up at the guys watching to ask if her take was okay....and they were all crying...
Last year, I traveled to London with my daughter and 2 tickets for the ABBA Voyage concert. I'm 53 years old, my daughter 25 and she loves their music. It was a brilliant concert and I got very emotional during the first two songs. ABBA was a part of my childhood and adult life with their fantastic music.
Did she just make this sound easy? An impeccable vocal performance! So raw and bare sonically that if every note was not spot on it would clearly reveal itself
This was their last Top Ten hit in The US and was No1 just about everywhere else in the world. There are quite a few "Messages" in this song such as "Spectators of the show, always staying low" meaning mutual friends keeping their heads down and keeping quiet so as not to be seen to be taking sides. Very clever lyrics. Many have covered this song but none have done it better than Agnetha, she own's It.
The number one brake up song of all times. Epic! Swedish ABBA is the best group ever to express feelings, that we all can feel a part of. TPrestine, trustworthy, nice, honest and wonderful ABBA! We NEED them and their music and lyrics, especially today, more than ever.
ABBA was a revolution in instrumentation in that time - never heard like this. We was stunned in my childhood everybody listened it till now. Love from Austria/Europe 🇦🇹
ABBA is one of my favorites groups from the 70's-80's. They had lots of hits & I owned many of their albums. I can't think of a bad song by them. Some of their best are "Gimme, Gimme, Gimme", "Thank You For The Music", "Does Your Mother Know?", "Waterloo", "Money, Money, Money", "The Name Of The Game", "Super Trouper", "I Have A Dream", "Voulez-Vous", "Fernando", "Chiquitita", "Take A Chance On Me", "Mamma Mia", "SOS", "Knowing Me, Knowing You", "Dancing Queen" etc.
Knowing Me, Knowing You was the first record I bought from them. Many more great songs not mentioned just above, including Lay All Your Love On Me, and I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do.
ABBA are genuinely incredible....its impossible not to like their music. They always had a little something for every mood or occasion. They came out of a rich tradition of Swedish Folk and broke barrier after barrier. They have so much material to go through so I hope to see you react to more 😊
@@barsandbarbells2022 any ABBA song is on another level. I suggest you react to Argentine rock, especially Soda Stereo, the best rock band in Spanish, especially their last tour "Me veras volver" from 2007, songs like Signos, Prófugos, Ciudad de la Furia, Corazón delator are the best and at the level of any UK or USA band. You won't regret it
At least the first half of the '70s Sweden was very left in a political sense. The music was no exception and was supposed to say something about the society. God forbid your music was commercial and you wanted to become huge and successful and make money! ABBA were clever and used the annual Swedish Song Contest (Melodifestivalen) to reach out. First time was 1973 they didn't win but the year after they did and that meant you got to represent Sweden in a bigger European Song Contest which they also won. They never made it a secret that they in fact wanted to become huge successful and commercial. Although they were very popular here in Sweden but nothing compare to Britain and especially Australia! When they toured in Australia it was like the same hysteria when the Beatles were around!
@@NasaBalli Yes, I totally agree, the best band ever. With such a deaph, honesty, pristinity, down to earthness. Have no more words! FANTASTIC! We need them more now than ever.
ABBA has two UK numbers 1 in 1980 - The Winner Takes It All and Super Trouper. In a way you can say Agentha had the lead on Winner and Frida had the lead in Super Trouper so one each.
In 2007 she left and this song stil kills me everytime I listen to it and everytime I say to myself don’t listen to it but it’s so perfect that I don’t mind hurting. Good luck to all you lovers out there❤😢
ABBA!Respect.Swedish legends with estimated record sales of over 400 millions that makes them only 2nd best selling band after the Beatles.I'm surprised you are kinda unaware of their discography.Pop royalty, legacy band with a comeback album in 2021 after a 40 years gap! that blasted to n01 in 18 countries and a concert experience that's been running in London since 26th of May 2022 and already sold over a million tickets!F-ABBA.Evergreen.
In their defense ABBA were never that big in the US despite Dancing Queen peaked at Billboard. Offcourse they were/are very popular in Sweden but nothing compare to Britain and Australia. When they were touring in Australia it was like the same kind of hysteria as when the Beatles were around.
I doubt that any American knows what the Eurovision song contest is. Nevertheless, ABBA is the best pop group to have ever existed. You'll see and hear...
ABBA were the trendsetters in the field of commercial pop music of the seventies. They where the pioneers of music videos, the first to show their performance on TV music shows that didn't include other musicians playing in the background as was common in the music videos of the 70's. Forty or fifty years later, they have become the first band to introduce abbatars playing in real time, something old and new pop or rocks acts will emulate for now and the future.. In the 70's, ABBA were called the geniuses of music after their song Eagle was released by the media professionals. And to support that declaration, their music has continued to be relevant to new generation of music lovers. To deeply understand ABBA is to go back in time when and compare them with other popular artistes who managed to score only two or three hits records and nothing more, when ABBA had over nineteen number ONE songs around global hit parade or charts. There is no continent that doesn't know ABBA.
The whole song gets me..every single time, emotions are pure...very well painted in this song........a heartstring puller if you have live(d) this feeling....
Agreed. Another heart wrenching lyrics is "does it feel the same, when she calls your name ". This song is an emotional overload. Very raw, yet upbeat in a way that only Abba can do
Certainly the greatest song ever recorded, when you consider Agnetha's heartbreaking vocals, and the rest of the band turning in a magnificent performance, as always.
What is so crushing is seeing all those happy pictures of ABBA together and then knowing that they all divorced and then stood on stage next to each other "singing" of their break up... except it is almost not singing... but telling... telling the story. These four were SO happy together with their success and lives... but it crashed when pressures overwhelmed them. Great band, great music, great lyrics, great singers... so tragically sad and relatable for anyone that has had a divorce.
The guys played instruments and occasionally sang. The two women did most of the vocals... the other woman is doing the background vocals in this. Interestingly Bjorn wrote the song, Agnetha sang it. As per comments below they were married and divorced.
The harmonizing between Agnetha & Frida and the amazing arrangements, song-writing and composing skills of Benny and Björn, are what practically is the magic we know as ABBA. Frida is, at least, as good singer as Agnetha. Their voices combined is a match that is pretty hard to outmatch in pop history.
As much as i agree but don't forget their producer Michael Tretow who played a huge part in their success. He was very open minded and always up for a challenge when Björn and Benny wanted to try new ways of recording.
ABBA's musicianship is extraordinary. All their music was written by Benny, the piano player. He laid out all the parts and harmonies. The guy is a genius. All their lyrics were written by Bjorn, the guitarist. It's easy to overlook just how good his lyrics are. This song is especially poignant because he was married to Agnetha (singer) and he wrote these lyrics for her to sing (to him, as it were). Incredible song. Incredible band.
ABBA is an acronym for name of the members. A for Agnetha (blonde singer, B for Bjorn (guitar, background singer plus about 6 leadsongs), B for Benny (Piano and background singing) and A for Annifrid (Frida) who is the other leadsinger (the Brunette). The history of this song is a bit spevial because it is about a divorce and Agnetha and Bjorn had just gone through one of those. The guys wrote all the songs together and then they all 4 decided which song suited which voice best. Both ladies are excellent vocalists and their harmonies are a match made in heaven. They most often have a part of their songs where these harmonies shine so in that sense this song is a bit untypical. But they could often be about about sad things like breakups and still be uptempo songs which is rather typical.
Abba is a POP group that was unlike any other POP group! Their music is in a category alone! They have a sound that no other group had, very unique, a "time stamp" signature. They were huge! This song is a classic example of how their style stood apart from any other band. Their secret weapon was the chemistry of this two girls voices and how they came together. Outstanding! The blond is Agnetha, pronounced: Ag-net-ha.
When you get into, and get to know the Swedish group ABBA, you are really in for a very big treat. They and their music and lyrics are epic and magic. They are really able to show their feelings and thus get our own out. In those very insecure times, we need them. More than ever!
@@christianoazzuro6711Excactly right, they are showing their feelings raw and pristine. They also live in a Swedish culture, and are themselves Swedish, and that also helps. I think that is why they have almost all of their songs a mixture of melancholy and joy/happiness, what they are so famous for. They can make the most tragic and hurtful theme and present it so that you still feel that it is joy in it.
The two ladies were the primary lead singers together on most every song they performed & the men were mostly the composers & instrumentalists along w/backing vocals.
ABBA was probably the most successful and popular band in the world next to the Beatles, at that time many other artists hated them because they were incredibly successful and had easily 30 No. 1 hits. In the end when they broke up with each other (that's what this song is about, their own breakups) and then they went their separate ways EVERYONE bowed to them and there wasn't a great artist in the world who didn't love ABBA, ABBA songs can always be heard since the 70s and also in 100 years and more, timeless music of the extra class
And they returned after 40 years! They have recorded a new album and are performing as ABBAtars in London. I have been 3 times and it is an amazing event!
Really enjoy how y'all give insightful & thoughtful commentary. I'm a classic rock/metal head but when groups the caliber ABBA come on how can you not move & not be moved.
I'm still in love with her. I think everyone was. When I was a kid ABBA were untouchable. To be fair, it may seem cheesy, but you have to remember nobody had done this. It really is art in it's proper form.
Abba, one of the biggest album seller groups in Europe ever. Song was about divorce, written by her husband and band member while she sang it. Great 70's and 80's band, they just released another album this year I believe. Peace from Northern Michigan.
Actually Abba are only topped by The Beatles, concerning groups category and commercial success in recorded history.Though not that huge in USA,their record sales worldwide were phenomenal.THeir comeback album VOYAGE was no1 in about 20 countries and top 3 in a few dozen more.Their VOYAGE London Stradford gigs sold over 1 million tickets and also BPI awarded them with a special prize for being highly streamed by people from a range of 16-35 years old acording to statistics.Award was presented about a week ago.
Great reaction to a fantastic group who worked so hard on their songs, being absolute perfectionists, with a talent to match, and to me never ever disappointed with the finished polished article. As for the next recommendation the list is so long but Dancing Queen is right up there.
The two guys from ABBA wrote a musical called CHESS. It has some fantastic songs and for an artist who starred in the musical, and someone you haven't reacted to, check out Josh Groban singing "Anthem", one of the songs from that musical.
Love and loved them since the 70's. Very powerfull and harmonising music. Beautiful❤. A sudjestion for new years day would be their song Happy New Year😊. I recommand listening in to that and build out your ABBA songs.. You will enjoy it. *Does your mother know *Lay all your love *One of us *Knowing me,knowing you *Take a chance *Slipping through my fingers. To name a few
There's so much o say about this song that's already been said, but one thing I didn't see among the other comments is that this video was directed by Lasse Hallström, two time Academy Award winning director (My Life as a Dog (1985) and Cider Hose Rules (1999)). He has directed 40 of ABBA's videos and also documentaries about them.
ABBA songs always feature great vocals, great production, and catchy hooks. All four members sing but the two ladies did most of the vocsls. They got their name from the first letter of their names(Agnetha, Bjorn, Benny, Anni-Frid)
I just go through a heartbreak and it describes exactly this feeling of this pain. It is a grieving process to say goodbye to your deepest love, to say goodbye to your most precious dreams, to say goodbye of lots of perspectives, to say goodbye to a whole perception connected to this person.
I'm almost sure that this was part of the DISCO ERA. The beat sounds like it is. It's a great song. Being an adult in the 70s and 80s was so fun. We had night clubs and really good music to dance to. You just can't find that anymore. THANKS😊
The lyrics can be understood, emotions are real throughout the song, and these songs are as relevant today as they were 10/20/30/40/50 years ago and will continue to be so
ABBA was ahead in pop-music according to development, arrangements . Listening to them and knowing that it is music from the seventies it is obvious that they were ahead of many artists.
Vocally and instrumentally, this song is superb. This calibre of pop music cannot be imitated or improved. Their sound engineer, Micke Tretow, has described their music as symphonic ❤ Yes, Frida sings lead in songs like Money, Money, Money and Super Trouper. In other tracks, like SOS and Knowing Me, Knowing You, the girls sing together. Benny and Bjorn wrote ABBA's music, and their partners sang beautifully. An incredibly fortuitous foursome!
It’s really interesting that there are still people in the world that haven’t really heard ABBA before. And it’s even more interesting that no matter who you ask no one really ever has a single bad thing to say about them. And that’s so fantastic that people can appreciate their work even if it’s not their type of genre.
Thank you so much for the reaction. I have been a fan since the -70s. Their catalog contains well over a hundred absolutely fantastic songs. Agnetha (blond) was a soprano, now mezzo, Frida was a mezzo-soprano, now alto. Their voices worked together better than anything I`ve ever heard and like they say, made this "third voice" which is so beautiful. Their harmonies are the best in the world and Benny and Björn masters when it comes to writing songs and making the most of these talented singers. Please react to Knowing me Knowing you, The day before you came, Eagle (album version), When all is said and done, Does your mother know/ Hole in your soul live in Wembley 1979, Chiquitita, Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (a man after midnight), The Visitors, Lay all your love on me, My love, My life and I`m a marionette. Just to get some idea, how versatile they are.
ABBA came to fame by being the first group to win the huge Eurovision Song Contest with their song Waterloo. It was like no other song that had ever been entered before and it changed Eurovision for ever. Here int the UK they had 9 no.1s and many others in the top ten. Their cataloge is huge.
They were the first Eurovision win for Sweden but not the first to win Eurovision. The contest was started back in the 1950's and ABBA won it in the 1970's.
@@lightwalker7123 I didn't say they were the first to win, i said they were the first 'group' to win. And yes the contest started in 1956.With Sweden first entering in 1958
Interesting to hear your review. Hard to believe you are not more familiar with the songs of Abba! You must listen to more of their work. Incredible volume of great pop songs spanning decades. They brought out a new album last year which was superb, given their current ages and how long since they last recorded together.
By the way next year in Sweden is to celebrate the 50 years of ABBA... With “Waterloo” in 1974. It was the 19th edition of the melodifestivalen contest, hosted at the Brighton Dome in the UK... And will be hosted in Stockholm City next years... Welcom to Sweden gays and girls... AND HAVE A PARTYYYYYYY - 2024...
I hope you get on the ABBA train, enjoyed your reaction. ABBA had lots of variation in their songs and included classical, rock, Disco, folk and familiar pop sounds but usually with a unique take. As I tell most reactors new to ABBA, the track I would say that sums them up as a band is "Name of the game" Agnetha was on lead here but Frida, the other female is also a strong vocalist and they took it in turns to lead depending on whose voice best suited while the males wrote and performed the music and lyrics and did backing as well (And one or two leads in earlier songs) The female vocalist though both great solo were especially famed for their harmonies.
I hope you guys can do more ABBA reactions..alot more..you never go wrong with this super group...the amazing popularity they maintained here is a proof of that..
Love ABBA, As great a pop group as there's ever been. Just amazing songwriting and production. They were much bigger in the UK (nine #1s) than here in the USA. I think their music is best described as a mix of Swedish melancholy with classical motifs backed by a version of Phil Spector's "wall of sound." Interestingly enough, this is really a super group. All were successful individually, with various forms of music including folk, before they teamed up (and paired up) in the early '70s
These lyrics were written by Bjorn shortly after his divorce from Agnetha, the vocalist here. Voted favourite Abba song by many fans around the world, it was also Agnetha's & Benny's, the composer. Abba were the only band that could make you dance with tears in your eyes! Thereis a live tv studio version of this song that shows the rest of the band, including the backing musicians. The band consists of Benny Andersson, piano, composer & vocalist, Bjorn Ulvaeus, guitarist, lyricist & vocalist, Agnetha Faltskog, vocalist, Anni-Frid Lyngstad, vocalist. They toured with a full backing band.

About things we've gone through
Though it's hurting me

And that's what you've done too
Nothing more to say

Building me a fence

Lay All Your Love On Me is another really top song by them.
The number one brake up song of all times. Epic! Swedish ABBA is the best group ever to express feelings, that we all can feel a part of. TPrestine, trustworthy, nice, honest and wonderful ABBA! We NEED them and their music and lyrics, especially today, more than ever.
Could not have said it better myself.
ABBA was a revolution in instrumentation in that time - never heard like this. We was stunned in my childhood everybody listened it till now.
Love from Austria/Europe 🇦🇹
'till now'... and maybe forever.
@@alexioverdo5225 for sure 👍
They have so much material to go through so I hope to see you react to more 😊
You will!
@@barsandbarbells2022 Good Reaction. They spiralled to International fame by winning The Eurovision Song Contest in 1974 with "Waterloo"..:)
Abba ruled in the seventies in Europe. Everything they made hid to first place on the charts. They were magical.
They still are magical.
They ruled the 70s here in the States as well! Best pop group of the 20th-century.
And Australia 🇦🇺 ❤
And many hits through out Asia in the 70's and 80's too. I was still in Middle & High School in Thailand. Yeap I am old..lol

In their defense ABBA were never that big in the US despite Dancing Queen peaked at Billboard. Offcourse they were/are very popular in Sweden but nothing compare to Britain and Australia. When they were touring in Australia it was like the same kind of hysteria as when the Beatles were around.
It all started in 1974 with the winning in the Eurovision Song Contest with the song "Waterloo"...... 🙂
I doubt that any American knows what the Eurovision song contest is. Nevertheless, ABBA is the best pop group to have ever existed. You'll see and hear...
ruclips.net/video/Vp1_OKawHYw/видео.html
There is something about the line “and I understand, you’ve come to shake my hand” always gets me 😢
Every time I hear this song, I cry. As well as many, many of their other songs.
The whole song gets me..every single time, emotions are pure...very well painted in this song........a heartstring puller if you have live(d) this feeling....
Agreed. Another heart wrenching lyrics is "does it feel the same, when she calls your name ". This song is an emotional overload. Very raw, yet upbeat in a way that only Abba can do
Pretty the whole song make me tear up as a man lol since it sort of reflected her real marriage. Enjoyed it!
Sometimes I think this may be the greatest song ever written
I do, too.
@@NasaBalli Yes, I also think that ABBA is the best group and this is the most epic song.
Certainly the saddest
Yes that was difficult to sing with all happening to their relationship.
Very very well said!
Perfectly explained Kurben
'they are able to show their feelings and thus get our own out"...Bravo.
Any group that has so many hits that they can use the hits to make a musical and 2 movies tells you all you need to know about how big they were.
This was song was written the same time as she was breaking up with Bjorn, it must have been hard for her.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it! We'll definitely do some more ABBA!
Agnetha’s vocals in this was sooo Beautiful and Strong ❤
ABBA’s compilation album is in the top ten of best selling albums of all time.
I'm still in love with her. I think everyone was. When I was a kid ABBA were untouchable. To be fair, it may seem cheesy, but you have to remember nobody had done this. It really is art in it's proper form.
ABBA music is very well written music, lot of layers.
Abba has countless amazing songs, Chiquitita is one of my favorites.
Might be our next one... 👀
They are the soundtrack of my life!
Agneta - sings (the blonde) Björn - piano, Benny - guitar and Anne-Frid - sings. The girls took turns as the lead singer.
This is my favourite ABBA song of all time!!
Great reaction to a fantastic group who worked so hard on their songs, being absolute perfectionists, with a talent to match, and to me never ever disappointed with the finished polished article. As for the next recommendation the list is so long but Dancing Queen is right up there.

They are second to only the Beatles of selling the most albums in the world.
When Agnetha and Frida combind their singing, it creats a "third voice"

The two guys from ABBA wrote a musical called CHESS. It has some fantastic songs and for an artist who starred in the musical, and someone you haven't reacted to, check out Josh Groban singing "Anthem", one of the songs from that musical.
Love and loved them since the 70's. Very powerfull and harmonising music. Beautiful❤.
A sudjestion for new years day would be their song Happy New Year😊. I recommand listening in to that and build out your ABBA songs.. You will enjoy it.

To name a few
ABBA did something with their talent no other artist or group has been able to accomplish. They made their pop music timeless.
If you guys wanna have fun see them LIVE at Wembley 1979,performing "Does you mother-It s gotta be rock n roll"..
are you thinking about Hole in your soul`? Yeah, thats a good one
So powerful and so well arranged; magical. If this song doesn't cut you like a knife, something's wrong.
I just go through a heartbreak and it describes exactly this feeling of this pain. It is a grieving process to say goodbye to your deepest love, to say goodbye to your most precious dreams, to say goodbye of lots of perspectives, to say goodbye to a whole perception connected to this person.
Wonderful ABBA. Great job guys.👏👏👏
I've been listening to ABBA since 1990 when I was five years old, and I still love them.
I'm almost sure that this was part of the DISCO ERA. The beat sounds like it is. It's a great song. Being an adult in the 70s and 80s was so fun. We had night clubs and really good music to dance to. You just can't find that anymore. THANKS😊
The Disco era was my Happy Days.
Abba is my all time favorite group. If you couldn't dance to their music you were hopeless.
ABBA! Masters of the happy/sad-songs. A masterpiece this song. Looking forward to hear many more ABBA-reactions from you :)
My childhood right there. My mom loved Abba and always played it when I was young.
Dunno if anyone mentioned it below. ABBA won the 1974 Eurovision with "Waterloo". This is what propelled them into the International scene.
ABBA came to fame by being the first group to win the huge Eurovision Song Contest with their song Waterloo. It was like no other song that had ever been entered before and it changed Eurovision for ever. Here int the UK they had 9 no.1s and many others in the top ten. Their cataloge is huge.

As I tell most reactors new to ABBA, the track I would say that sums them up as a band is "Name of the game"
Agnetha was on lead here but Frida, the other female is also a strong vocalist and they took it in turns to lead depending on whose voice best suited while the males wrote and performed the music and lyrics and did backing as well (And one or two leads in earlier songs)
The female vocalist though both great solo were especially famed for their harmonies.
How can such an upbeat song be so melancholic, every ABBA song feels like this
I hope you guys can do more ABBA reactions..alot more..you never go wrong with this super group...the amazing popularity they maintained here is a proof of that..

"ABBA " IS THE GREATEST POP GROUP EVER .
I second that 💯%
An incredible heartfelt breakup song - ABBA is incredible here. This was a break from their often Disco 1970s infused sound.
To have one divorced partner write these lyrics about it, and then the other sing it... that's top drawer professionalism right there.
Talk, talk, talk and talk.
One of the best groups ever.
ABBA war wohl neben den Beatles die erfolgreichste und beliebteste Band der Welt , damals haben viele andere künstler sie gehasst weil sie unfassbar erfolgreich waren die hatten locker 30 Nr. 1 Hits.
