Tim Says Wham-O!

  • Tim has long been a fan of the American Wham-O Toy Company, which has been going since 1948. He has a collection of their toy catalogues, the earliest one is 1957. They were behind many iconic toys, from the Frisbee to the Hula Hoop. In the 1970s, Tim started corresponding with them. And in 1985, one of the founders of the company, Richard Knerr, sent Tim a box of toy samples, all made by Wham-O. Tim was supposed to meet up with Richard that summer, but unfortunately that didn't come off. Richard was in London, but Tim thinks maybe he didn't have the correct phone number.
Anyway, here is that box of samples...
Frisbees in various sizes and designs, boomerangs, a slingshot or catapult which was one of the earliest toys the company produced, a super bouncy ball, called the Super Ball, with a very high coefficient of restitution, Slapcie and Silly String!

We used to make our own “water wienies”. We’d go down to the neighborhood drugstore and get 3 feet of amber rubber “surgical” tubing, tie a knot in one end, and put the lower half of a click-top ball point pen barrel into the other, point facing out. That would concentrate the water flow, and it could shoot for a long distance. Just jam the point of the pen barrel into a simple hose nozzle to fill. You could carry the water wienie like a tuba, curving over your back, behind your neck, and the business end aimed from the hip (they got quite long when filled). However, every once in a while, the tube would give out with a bang, and soak the user! If you were shirtless, which was likely for boys in a summer water fight, that could sting a bit too.

And the fact that you put a dollop on the end of a straw and blew into it means you could just as easily inhale afterwards and get a lung full of whatever made that stuff what it was! Lordy, but that couldn't have been safe!
