Is it just me, or is Patti Austin one of the most underrated singers in the business? Whenever you name the best pure vocalists in music, she always seems to get overlooked altogether, or if she's mentioned at all, it's as an afterthought.
Sad but true she has a great body of work solo or guesting on other projects it's sad how this continues to happen to some of the most brilliant of artists
I have never saw this session. What a wonderful rendition that the great Patti Austin has the ability to do. She truly is a jazz great. She show how to make a song your own.
She is vastly underrated. I saw her do a tribute to Ella and I don't think anyone else could have done such a great job. I love Randy Crawford's original and this version.
I don't waste my time comparing the artists, I instead listen to the performance, and this, is spot on. I can listen to a bassist tear "Teen Town", a new one, and I appreciate the artist who is playing it, although in my mind, Jaco's is the version that I like the best of any that I will ever hear! Still a great performance, is worthy of its own merit. And with Patti, you can't go wrong!
I am happy right now! one of my favourite songs sung by my favourite singer (next to ella!). wow! thanks so much! never knew that she ever sung this song! great!!!!!
A LOT OF YOU NEED TO DO YOUR HOMEWORK ON PATTI AUSTIN. QUINCY JONES' GOD-DAUGHTER, WORKED WITH MJ, GEORGE BESNON AND OTHER ARTISTS BACK IN THE 80'S AND HER OWN ALBUMS. WHEN TOP-FLIGHT ARTISTS LIKE THIS GET TOGETHER, IT'S ALL ABOUT HAVING FUN, NOT COMPETING.
I can't decide. Patti Austin or Randy Crawford? I have been diehard about the Randy Crawford version until I saw and listened to this. Now I'm not so sure. What do you think?
I love her duets with Michael Jackson and James Ingram, and of course her own solo projects *(Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, I 💣🧡)* But honestly, I can't feel her rendition of this. Another girl, out of the 1987 Baden, Germany - Reichi Guillory, did an okay interp of this but not enough to rave about. And still, she was a more than decent singer. Even Layla Hathaway, who did a funkier version of it, was okay. Not saying simply cause it was Randy Crawford who did it first but this tune is hers and she owns it for life.
@free2bpoppie since u brought the bassist thingy i am of the same opinion, but as a bassist myself ,after listening to this i kno that no matter how technical i get n no matter how feel i get i ll never play like a black guy -.-(rare exceptions like stu zender,n jaco ofc -.-)
+stretchgilbert -- Could well be Omar Hakim on drums..... with dreadlocks! -- It certainly wasn't Stix Hooper, and to boot where the f*** was Joe Sample when this was recorded?
Give this weight shit a rest. This lady can sing. For years she has transported us from our daily cares with her voice. So many hits, so many other great songs. You do what she has done for so many years then find fault .
@benedictines Unfortunately everyone wants everyone to be so damn commercial. Ok... that is cool but allow the artist to become their best with out all of the molding and "grooming" that takes place. The execs may know the industry but artists have to be strong enough to promote themselves the way they choose. I applaud Ms. Austin for staying true to herself and not falling into the trap(s) of the industry. Trust me she has a loyal and substantial fan base. Awesome woman!
best version of the song because she does some own varations. other interprets seem to try to copy randy crawfoot. even she herselve in the later concerts.
And stop comparing Patti and Randy. Both women own this song! Patti owns her interpretation and Randy owns hers. The two in incomparable, in my opinion.
Randy....Please don't critize another artist, if you like a different version. listen to it. Keep dat shit to yourself,,,,,,don't nobody wanna hear it. You feel me.........
Randy Crawford owns this tune....Patti Austin pales compared to the always powerful, always excellent Randy Crawford - no comparison. Sorry - this is the junior varsity version of a classic.
@@direfranchement: Randy may have more of a Black sound to her voice, but that doesn't necessarily equate more soulful, If I am to assume that you're comparing Randy's voice to Patti's.
PATTI AUSTIN IS ONE OF THE ALL TIME GREATEST VOCALIST EVER! She is always on point, And she has perfect pitch!

Patti Austin is a one in a million vocalist, always on, always great. Marvelous vocal qualities and stage presence.
I have never saw this session. What a wonderful rendition that the great Patti Austin has the ability to do. She truly is a jazz great. She show how to make a song your own.
「パティ・オースティン」 が歌う、「Street Life」 を初めて聴きました。

Monsters of groove, what a band.

I always thought she did the original version of this song. I didn't know that was someone else.
Patti Austin,is a legend in her own righteousness.simply put, she is bad. 100%
Only R.C owns this song period ☝️💪🙏
Finest

in 1997 why were Joe Sample and Stix not present?
For Real.
Thanks for posting this. Where is Joe Sample?
Was Joe on keys? Only saw the back of the head. And where was Stix at this point? If it was only Wilton, then sorry, this was not the Crusaders.
Great in every way! On the musicians listing ,there was no name of the DRUMMER???who is he? [Omar hakim?]

Is That Omar Hakim On Drums?

Looks like it, and he was playing on Joe's cd's around that time.
What all this talk only about Patti Cause I think Natalie is putting up a hell of a performance "Come On Everyone !!!
Wilton Felder tenor sax? or Baritone.

This is old, Patti Austin is now 150lbs. lighter
best version of the song because she does some own varations. other interprets seem to try to copy randy crawfoot. even she herselve in the later concerts.
No disrespect.. but I think Randy Crawford s voice is better suited to the song.. but Patty too does a marvelous.version..
Wilton Felder is one bad M F !
@benedictines
Amen
このベーシスト誰?
drummer ???

Yes Patti, But Randy Crawford is the original and top shelf!!!
No one can touch Randy Crawford not even the great Patti Austin, still a good job though.
Randy....Please don't critize another artist, if you like a different version. listen to it. Keep dat shit to yourself,,,,,,don't nobody wanna hear it. You feel me.........

Patti isn't nearly soulful enough for this song. Sorry gurl.
