There Is a RUclipsr I watch who fixes 1:6 scale figures with fake leather, he removes the fake leather then he rubs shoe polish into it till it's glossy which is the best option unless you just want it to just be fabric instead which looks fine on some designs
I just tried the black shoe polish method on a 7 year old Vader undersuit that was peeling. First you remove ALL the pleather just by rubbing with your fingers then apply the shoe polish. It looks acceptable and more leather like than just leaving the naked fabric. Do not try to make spot repairs with acrylic paint on flaking areas...it doesn't work and makes everything worse.

I’m going to say something that sounds fatalistic but 303 doesn’t help faux leather nor does applying acrylic sealant. I applied 303 onto HT Deadpool version 1 and the Batfleck figures a few times. Didn’t stop the peeling. If you are applying acrylic sealant, once you put the coat back on your figure, do not remove it because it will still peel. Also make sure the armpits do not stick to each other otherwise, you could actually peel the pleather when trying to pull the arms apart. 303 worked very well on the dome of the ED-203 though. So I would say it works very well in preserving rubber. The best solution is to keep your collection of characters that come in pleather clothing to a minimum until the industry changes its practices and if you do get them, accept the fact that they will spoil in time.

Well it was happening, luckily theres a guy i found on EBay that makes custom replacement overcoat snd pants...(THEY WERE FLAKING TOO!). So i reached out to him and aquired the pants and jacket from him. He assured me that this will last WAY FAR LONGER than what they had on him! Great video! Maybe a video like this about rooted hair and if it’s worth the $100+ added to products? Just an idea! It’s gross how much Hot Toys & some other companies can keep getting away with using frankly garbage synthetic leathers. The figures are already floating $250+, it’s insanity to me that theres no consistent use of real leather. Durability is an aspect that will probably never be addressed sadly.
real leather isn’t hard to work with as long as you have the right tools, and with the millions to probably billions of dollars they have, I’m sure they do have the right tools, but they are too lazy to do it. We need to get Howard Chan and his team of lazy idiots fired and replaced with people who will think about the customer and not the money.
If it starts peeling, I’m going to do some mods and change my pleather stuff to real leather. And get leather boots 1:6. So when I get peeling I’m not worried since I never bought fully pleather stuff like the darth Vader. I’m chilling.
i kinda find this sad, I never owned a hot toys figure like this but I pre-ordered now my first Lord Starkiller figure. But knowing about pleader kinda sucks. Because those things are like 300 euros! a lot of money for something that will break as time moves on... don't know if I really should get it tho now. I can do other things with 300 euros that won't just break honestly
@@KeCoCollects that’s true tho :) for now I just know that my room is most of the time hot and there is dust for sure, I could use the money for other things tho as well so yeah
Great video. Scary shit 😭 about flaking hot toys figures. I have all of mine in storage still in their original boxes. It’s climate controlled inside a Public Storage facility on the 2nd floor. Do you think after all the years they’ve been in there they’re okay in the boxes or am I fucked? 🥴
If it's climate controlled, you are in a better position than not... BUT, the chemicals from the paint and such could always cause problems - they aren't meant to live in the boxes 🫠
Pleather is 0% leather. It's literally a mixture of only 100% plastic materials, made to "look" like leather. There is no way to protect this type of material, other than careful handling (posing, or rubbing it), and proper climate conditions. Like no UV exposure & careful storage (what women do with handbags made of pleather). I have taken this approach with the figures that do have this material. Some are now over 10 years old, and they look like new. Many women swear that using any chemical whatsoever on their pleather accessories will eventually make them more brittle. Whatever works for you, I guess. BTW, this video is very informative, so thanks. My understanding of the whole ordeal is now deeper.
You think for 300+ dollars we couldve gotten real leather already for our figures. For crying out loud, the sizes of leather needed for these figures is equivalent to our underwear.
@@KeCoCollectshot toys is made up of lazy and incompetent people who halfass these figures with fragile materials, and that greedy asshole Howard Chan is at hot toys with a smug look on his face and probably inhales his own farts just like the smug people in South Park.

not all pleathers are created equal. It's crazy how some figures with pleather clothing from the 80's and 90's are still going strong while high end Hot Toys pleather items are dust within 5 years. Medicom's 1/6 RAH line of figures seem to have the most issues of modern era figures.
I don’t have figures with fake leather so far , and while almost all of my bags and jackets are from real leather ,I’ve had a few from fake leather ,and despite of living in always cold humidity in the Netherlands ,I have seen 0 flaking ,and I’ve done nothing to protect them,so maybe the fake leather they put on those figures is like too thin or too low quality, idk.
@@KeCoCollects Winters are not as cold as before now ,but Fall,Winter and Spring 0 to 10 C . The issue is super strong wind and lots of rain all the time . And as the land is flat ,nothing to break the wind ,which makes it feel colder . Around 10 years ago, there was no real summer ,more of the same . But in the later years there are some summer temperature spikes , which because of the humidity makes it feel too hot ,lol.
These companies need to ditch the pleather straps and belts entirely and just use softer plastic. As for coats and outfits and what not, they’ll just have to use leather or nylon. The cost is justified, as it creates happier customers. Knowing what to use is going to be a case-by-case basis though. Sometimes, nylon looks better. Nylon doesn’t last as long as leather, but it lasts longer than polyurethane pleather. My Starlord GOTG1 coat only lasted about ten years. If it were made of nylon, it may have lasted another five to ten years. And this was without using any 303 protectant-which, I will certainly start doing once I get my collection set up again.
They are so over reliant on pleather that they’re too lazy to try other ways to simulate the look of leather. There are other ways to simulate the look of leather, like waxed fabric or nylon, rubbery plastic with leather paint, and many other ways. But no, they’re too lazy to do any of those things and keep using pleather no matter how much backlash they get.
Evening bud, I'm pretty sure you'll particularly understand & appreciate this seemingly random comment & my covert reference and ultimate compliment. Am binging once again this weekend on your useful "Hot Toys 101" type vids you've recorded over the last year. As I've shared previously, they are must view perspectives & tips for both newbie & experienced Hot Toy enthusiasts. My joke first.... one of my FAV actors from the last few decades, who co-starred in a personal Top 10 comedy movie of all time, "Year One", w/ Jack Black & Michael Cera & directed by Harold Ramis ; a film that just hits my funny bone dead center since its release. Assume you've seen?? If not, I'd suggest & hope you try it out. Was panned by most critics but IS a hilarious raunchy flic with a TON of stars including Ramis himself! So who's the successful (to this day) co-star & why am I even sharing this odd observation & comment?? I'm talking about the multi-talented Hank Azaria who's also a well-known voice actor as well. Many are unaware of his long-standing role in The Simpsons. His role in Year One was subtlety great. IMO, his unique touch of quirky voice inflections in the role, you'll understand if you watch, was great. He regularly adds funny dialects to his movie rolls over the decades; why Ramis hired him. My covert compliment?? Your monologs on YT often remind me of the great Hank Azaria. I particularly noticed it again this evening while binging a dozen or so of your past vids. Let me know if you've been told the same?? Check out Year One!! 😂👍🏻
Hot toys are using nylon material for the new battle damaged Vader instead of the usual pleather , hopefully this will fix the pleather issue in the future for all high end figurines ( source : hot toys secret base )
I replaced jacket on my Red Skull a few months ago. Bought figure used and was aware of the flaking issue. Wasn't too bad when I got it but started noticing the flaking more and more. Still wasnt as bad as other photos of the jacket I had seen but still. The replacement jacket was cool but you can tell it wouldn't be long till it also flakes. The materials HT used specifically on that jacket are not as good as the faux leather it seems to me on more currently released figures. You can tell its not the best quality compared to something like recent Nightmare Batman, or even Blade. Again this is my own opinion. Also don't assume you are getting full grain leather when descript says leather materials. Its more likely a lower tier quality leather being uses to save costs. Probably more durable then PU leather but again you're more then likely not getting the same leather used on genuine leather jacket you'd wear yourself. Thanks for vid!
When I see shit flaking, I just strip the whole thing. Sometimes it looks kinda cool and I leave it like that. Flaking on my Deadpool from first movie was so bad that I stripped him completely and now at least I can pose him with no fear. No one would buy him anyway. Same for Bernthal Punisher and Crow. Thankfully no flaking on my old school star wars figures' boots. Not sure why.
This is the main reason why I don't collect figures with faux lather clothes. Especially Hot Toys and Sideshow. They flakes like crazy. Yes, your brand new Darth Vader will flake soon.
Sucks I had to take all mine off for eric draven, and then I had to paint the pants and jacket over with fake leather paint. It is what it is, lol. At least I don't have to deal with that crap anymore. I also use 303, and they are in a house away from a window with the air always on. Even tho we are in Florida. Maybe one day they will stop this . I will say for my predator figures, I used a clear coat pant that goes over them, and that stopped my issue. Again, that helped me.
@KeCoCollects lol I thought it was a inspiration for you in these videos haha. Definitely didn't mean it in a rude way man, been watching your videos long time brother
I haven’t had any of my figures long enough to experience any degradation but I do use 303 and Angelus on pleather components. We shall see 🤞 But yeah Hot Toys only using genuine leather on certain figures is absolute bullshit. I think 99% of collectors would rather pay another 10-20% more for figures that had premium material.
hot toys use so many different materials for their figures and many are not good. do not last and not good for keeping figures in poses . they really should use better and reduce their prices
Hot toys display there figures from the beginning of production, be interesting to see if there collection has figures deteriorating. I believe keeping them in the box and in the wrong conditions is the only reason why this happens they need to be out of the box and alow the outfits to fall naturally with no pressure to the figures pose so a normal stance. I have figures over 10 years ie batman 1989 cape and it's perfect still as if it was made yesterday.
strictly speaking "genuine leather" means anything and can be deceiving. if you are a leather experts, be specific - full grain leather, top grain leather, or faux/artificial leather just like in your hot toys. genuine leather use to deceive naive customers. same when buying leather sofa.
@duncanmcdaniel problem is he can't be fired. Dude friggin owns the company lol. He will keep producing and using shitty material until we as collectors vote with our wallets. Avoid and do not preorder figures that uses pleather

Thanks for the research Keco! Do you know if the Dx10 or Dx13 Terminators are pleather or leather?
The DX13 is pleather. I HEARD that the DX10 is a better quality, closer to leather - but can't confirm. All says "leather like"
as someone who owns both, the dx13 is a pvc like material and doesnt flake...the belt unfortunately does. most people i know get a custom leather belt as a replacement, but the jacket and trousers dont flake. the dx10 is real leather, iv owned these figures for years and zero issues...only the belts.
@@pembsposse2621 this ☝️
@@pembsposse2621 thanks! I own the Dx10 and use 303 protectant on it just in case. Ooh I'll definitely look into real leather belts once mine inevitably cracks.
I have a HT 1/6 scale Brandon Lee figure (R.I.P. Mr. BRANDON LEE) "The Crow" and i noticed his long overcoat flaking. I was like "OH NO!!!!......THIS CAN'T BE HAPPENING!". It feels like REAL leather and a AMAZING AND FANTASTIC JOB he's done with this replacement set!!!!! Now i'm back happy! AWESOME JOB HE DID!👍😄
Well that's awesome!
Thanks 🙏 for the tips great video
Enjoy!
Did I forget to mention, how smart and talented you are?!? Just to be transparent, I am not saying that cause I want a particular InArt accessory or anything 😳😳😳😂🤣😂
lol. Giveaway coming this week I hope
Sir
You are correct and it why i avoid hot toys pleather
There are just so many with it!
Yeah-- next figure up mentality
Yeah the durability of these figures is an afterthought to them😡.
real leather isn’t hard to work with as long as you have the right tools, and with the millions to probably billions of dollars they have, I’m sure they do have the right tools, but they are too lazy to do it. We need to get Howard Chan and his team of lazy idiots fired and replaced with people who will think about the customer and not the money.

This happened to my Sideshow Anakin Skywalker! I had it boxed and years later took it out and the pleather detoriated
😔😔😔
If it starts peeling, I’m going to do some mods and change my pleather stuff to real leather. And get leather boots 1:6. So when I get peeling I’m not worried since I never bought fully pleather stuff like the darth Vader. I’m chilling.
Sounds like a plan!
His goes by the name of "teerapanya" and he's located in Thailand.....The set he's has for both the pants and overcoat goes for about $99.00.
Not too bad
Was just looking at the peeling on my Negan and now this video pops up. Funny
We are being watched 👀
i kinda find this sad, I never owned a hot toys figure like this but I pre-ordered now my first Lord Starkiller figure. But knowing about pleader kinda sucks. Because those things are like 300 euros! a lot of money for something that will break as time moves on... don't know if I really should get it tho now. I can do other things with 300 euros that won't just break honestly
No matter what you buy in life, NOTHING lasts forever. Enjoy what you can while you can :)
@@KeCoCollects 🤕
@KecoCollects , do we have to mention our “best figure and why” for the InArt Joker Detonator giveaway here too? Appreciate the answer 🙏🏼
On wills video is all you need ☝️
Yes, would love to see that jacket treated. 🙏🏼🤘🏼🙏🏼
🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Thanks for your input and watching!
I have the Captain America Winter Soldier Nick Fury hot toys and the coat on that is starting to crack, good on the video Keco.
Good luck!
Thanks man, needed this fr 😅😁
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
You think for 300+ dollars we couldve gotten real leather already for our figures. For crying out loud, the sizes of leather needed for these figures is equivalent to our underwear.
Very true, but as stated, real leather is harder to work with. And production at that scale may not be worth it? Just speculation of course
It's because idiots keeps buying pleather figures
Pure greed and cutting cost measures
@@KeCoCollectshot toys is made up of lazy and incompetent people who halfass these figures with fragile materials, and that greedy asshole Howard Chan is at hot toys with a smug look on his face and probably inhales his own farts just like the smug people in South Park.

Nah, let's go Preds
My first Starlord Action figure is completely ruined because of the flaking.
Oh no! Hate to hear that
Love this video!
Thanks for watching it!
Excellent video bro. If only there was a treatment for flake people..😅.
Yes!!! I'd wipe it all over my "friends" lol
not all pleathers are created equal. It's crazy how some figures with pleather clothing from the 80's and 90's are still going strong while high end Hot Toys pleather items are dust within 5 years. Medicom's 1/6 RAH line of figures seem to have the most issues of modern era figures.
No truer words
I don’t have figures with fake leather so far , and while almost all of my bags and jackets are from real leather ,I’ve had a few from fake leather ,and despite of living in always cold humidity in the Netherlands ,I have seen 0 flaking ,and I’ve done nothing to protect them,so maybe the fake leather they put on those figures is like too thin or too low quality, idk.
How cold is Netherlands btw? Just curious lol
@@Ka_T_ya the more you know! Thanks
The thickness does play a part
I haven't investigated enough about nylon. Interesting
I’m excited the new Indiana Jones is going to have actual leather
That's a MUST
Evening bud, I'm pretty sure you'll particularly understand & appreciate this seemingly random comment & my covert reference and ultimate compliment.
Haven't heard that one. Will check it out

Thanks for making my Vader viral😂
Was that your image??
@@KeCoCollects yeah my 1/4 Vader I selling it on Facebook 😆 dang wish I saw your video earlier on how to maintain in
Hot toys are using nylon material for the new battle damaged Vader instead of the usual pleather , hopefully this will fix the pleather issue in the future for all high end figurines ( source : hot toys secret base )
Good news!
They’re still using pleather for his boots and belt.
@@Slam_duncan03 yeah that’s unfortunate
Found out the hard way my "leather"
Jacket from a leather store wasn't real this winter lol
@@KeCoCollects ugh hate to see it lol
When I see shit flaking, I just strip the whole thing. Sometimes it looks kinda cool and I leave it like that. Flaking on my Deadpool from first movie was so bad that I stripped him completely and now at least I can pose him with no fear. No one would buy him anyway. Same for Bernthal Punisher and Crow.
Thankfully no flaking on my old school star wars figures' boots. Not sure why.
I hope my boots hold up ☝️
This is the main reason why I don't collect figures with faux lather clothes. Especially Hot Toys and Sideshow. They flakes like crazy. Yes, your brand new Darth Vader will flake soon.

I think some would pay as well
BANGER!
Boom 💥
hot toys use so many different materials for their figures and many are not good. do not last and not good for keeping figures in poses . they really should use better and reduce their prices
Sadly, their goal is to make money. If you never have to buy another, they go out of business
Feedback to companies: STOP USING PLEATHER MATERIAL!! 🤦
My Darth Vader RotJ DX model is arriving soon…here we go…
Should be good!
That's a great point honestly! I wonder what secret base looks like 👀

strictly speaking "genuine leather" means anything and can be deceiving. if you are a leather experts, be specific - full grain leather, top grain leather, or faux/artificial leather just like in your hot toys. genuine leather use to deceive naive customers. same when buying leather sofa.
100! Which is why as I mentioned that the term leather has now been regulated in the states because of misleading customers
Easy fix, don’t buy HT’s😂😂😂😂

These people are crack addicts, they can't say no
It's SUPPOSED to flake. Flaking is needed for repeat sales and orders when they reissue the figures. Howard is greedy
Hah. This is pretty accurate
Yeah Howard Chan is a greedy asshole and needs to be fired and replaced with someone who will think about the customer and not the money.
@duncanmcdaniel problem is he can't be fired. Dude friggin owns the company lol. He will keep producing and using shitty material until we as collectors vote with our wallets. Avoid and do not preorder figures that uses pleather
