watched this back in 85 and this changed my life. This is the best ever version of this song as it features Gary Marx playing the Ebow Guitar. On first and last none of the others play on it as the writer of the song Wayne Hussey played all Guitars and Bass. This was Gary Marxs last ever performance as he played this Old Grey Whistle Test Performance and went off to form Ghost Dance. The very night before at the Brighton Gig with the band he climbed onto the Pa and threw his guitar to the ground and stormed off. Gary Marx does not get enough credit for his time in the band. He wrote the music for 4 of the bands best ever songs. Nine While Nine. Heartland. Some kind of Stranger and First and last. Oh and Poison Door.
Thanks for info, I only noticed his playing in this vid even tho I've watched it so many times, I was only 10 but I remember the atmosphere of the time in Dublin: My estate was mainly Metalheads though one side of the surrounding area had lots of Punks and Goths, and the other was more Mod, Ska and Skinhead....it was a smorgasbord of great music, much of which I still listen to today. The Sisters definitely stood out as one of the leading alternative bands of the time along with New Model Army. I just soaked it all up. Cheers.
Have you ever been in love, so deeply it's all you had but then you find there is nothing there but memories and distorted perceptions? That's what it's about.
The Sisters had evolved from being a very good band in 1983 to only two years later becoming a rock outfit for all of us to marvel at with their groovy ghoulie spooky psychedelic imagery and the tongue in cheek manner which it was all served up, while never failing to deliver compositions which were nothing short of shimmering jewels.
Sisters are not a gothic band. You need to stop this. We are not hearing anything "goth" here. Andrew himself has already put an end to this foolishness of "Sisters is a gothic band." They never were, the people who adopted their deep sound in the Gothic style.
84 I saw them - they were awesome - Aylesbury friars -- great rock band - met Wayne H afterwards walking about the venue when everybody had gone home - he must have been about 21 !!!!
▪ Sisters of Mercy ▪ Marian ▪ In a sea of faces, in a sea of doubt In this cruel place your voice above the maelstrom In the wake of this ship of fools I'm falling further down If you can see me, Marian, reach out and take me home..... I hear you calling Marian Across the water, across the wave I hear you calling Marian Can you hear me calling you to Save me, save me, save me from the Grave... Marian Marian, there's a weight above me And the pressure is all too strong To breathe deep Breathe long and hard To take the water down and go to sleep To sink still further Beneath the fatal wave Marian I think I'm drowning This sea is killing me I hear you calling Marian Across the water, across the wave I hear you calling Marian Can you hear me calling you to Save me, save me, save me from the Grave... Marian
I’ve never tired of this tragic, perfectly romantic tune. It was one of the first songs that I could feel throughout my bones as a kid and it’s just as emotive for me now; lovely and unique

The song just came to Hussey in the studio and he recorded everything right there. But when Taylor heard the tape, he initially didn’t like it. ”Sounds like Siouxsie & The Banshees”, he said. Hussey left the studio, devastated. Next day when he returned, the engineer said ”listen to this”. He pressed play and through the monitors came ”In a sea of faces …”. Given that it could take months for Taylor to finish the lyrics for just one song, this was remarkable. And even to this day, he has to sing ”Marian” on every gig.
Happy to say I recorded this on my video player on the date it was originally aired and lets just say it was a revelation. Changed my life in a good way!
OMG - say what you will - I was introduced the The Sisters of Mercy by my sister's boyfriend and played the hell out of the cassette. Later i went on to like the The Mission UK and saw them in Boston in the mid-80's. Little did I know of the relationship. I always loved music - may it be a little blindly
