    Her using an ambient mic for one of the players makes me think about our monitor engineer on Martina McBride created some in ears when he was working for Bette Midler called “open ears”. It has a high frequency driver only and the rest of the ear canal is open for wedges and ambient noise. Gives the singer the openness of using wedges and not feeling closed in, and the high frequency driver provides detail for pitch.

    Awesome work, Nick! Really appreciate your content! Do you think it would be possible to actually hear some of those monitor engineers' work sometime? Since virtual soundcheck has become common on those bigger setups, maybe some engineers could let us hear what their artists actually listen to on stage? Then again, there might be copyright issues or something, IDK...
    Anyway, keep up the amazing work!

      agreed! I think why they don't is because of a copyright thing. I could (and most likely) be wrong

    Emily is Awesome. I sat watching this with my assistant Jaden who is one of the most focused and professional engineers I have met without whom I would find my work life much harder. This interview reinforced the point that it doesn’t matter if you are a woman, man or non-binary ….. you will get to where you need to be if you maintain professionalism, enthusiasm and a hunger to be the best you can be. Getting a good start in your career with fellow professionals will build confidence and allow you to make the mistakes you need to grow.
    A really inspirational interview with a true professional. Nick - you are doing great work on this channel.

    Woah woah woah, most vocalists don't like compression in their ear? I sing so much better when I have it. I thought it was exactly like the reverb thing lol.

    • @LaminarSound
      @LaminarSound 6 месяцев назад

      same. I always struggles with lower and softer notes just not being loud enough in my ears. And working the mic back and forth aint enough. When i took control of my own mix and ended up with 10db of compression with 4:1 ratio lol never felt or sounded better to me. Also, I think this is better for a FOH mix, from and engineers perspective I would much rather my vocalists keep the mic right on their lips whether belting it or singing softly. Let ME control your levels. Backing away from the mic changes the tonality and especially with female vocalists, losing that low end just makes the vocal harsher when belting it.

      Obvious bad compression is usually when singers bark up about it. Transparent quick compression is my go to for vocals and no one ever complains. I compress everything in iem mixes.

    Paying attention; I agree with that 100%. I think it's especially important if you're mixing monitors from front of house. I've seen many people get caught up in the vibe of the show, and miss requests being made by the musicians. I've dropped the ball with that myself too.
