So true a lot of people thinks they are one hit wonders. Blue October helped accept myself, forgive others, and fight to be better! Even when I feel like I can't. Helps me get through anything from all parts of my life. It's been 20 years and still clinging to their music for hope.
Yep, folks sleeping on Blue October are missing out on an amazing musical, storytelling, personal story. I'm a 45 year old die hard metal head, but we don't skip blue october songs at my house lol
So, I'm an older guy and was never familiar with Blue October until a couple of years ago. My then 19 year old daughter came to me and her mother and said "hey, I want to go on tour with a rock band". She is a photographer and was going to tour with the band she had been working with as their photographer/merch girl/tour manager/band mom. After my initial "oh hell no!!", she and her mom managed to talk me into oking it. The band she was with was opening on tour for Blue October! She went and had an amazing experience and got to know Justin and his band pretty well. Of course we got to hear a lot of great stories and the one thing that struck me, was the kindness and decency that they treated her with. While she is a strong, independent person, she was also a young girl starting out in a crazy business. I am grateful for the way they took to my daughter and helped build her confidence and self worth. They are good guys and I will always be glad that she went and met them! I'd love to meet Justin one day and shake his hand. Not for his music, but for his decency as a person.
Usually at most of their shows they have a meet and greet (for an added fee). I've met him (and the band) a few times. He also does this sometimes on his "Open Book" tours. So, keep an eye out for the next date in your city and go shake his hand.
@@Cata_777 You're welcome. My favorite story happened a couple of months after the tour. Justin was doing acoustic sets and she went to see one in Waco. She took her college friend and her friend's dad, both huge Blue October fans. Neither believed that she really knew Justin. They got there early and decided to grab a bite at a pizza place next door to the venue. They walked in and who's sitting there? Justin and his band. They see my daughter and shout "Boo" (that's what they called her on tour"). They gave her big hugs and made a big deal over her. Her friend and her dad's jaws dropped to the floor. They asked if she was shooting the show, she told them no, because she didn't have a photo pass. They took her (and her friend and her dad) back to their bus and got her one. Needless to say, she earned major coolness points...lol.
Awesome story. Thanks for sharing. Reading it made me smile. I've met Justin once, and he is an amazing, humble and gracious human. I've had several interactions with Matt Noveskey, Blue October's bassist. He was the manager of the band IAmDynamite, and we had them play a house show for us in Torrance, California. Since then, he's sent video birthday greetings with the entire band, and is such a great person. They are an important band and have helped so many people. Cheers, mate.
I lost my soulmate to cancer, and the way he loved me was the greatest blessing of my life. It's been several years since, and it doesn't get easier, but the pain evolves into constant gratitude for that love he showed me. You're in my thoughts and prayers, and I wish you all the comfort his presence brought you when you're hurting❤
I’m so sorry for your loss. You are so very fortunate to have had a partner that loved and honored you . I thought I did but he changed and it hurts like nothing else to realize you’re alone in a marriage.
I was his runner once. I drove him around, and we talked a lot. Chit-chat mostly, but there were a could moments of his beautiful vulnerability and strength. When i got the call to work, they told me i would be running for Blue Oyster Clut. And once i got there, i didn't know exactly who Blue October was by name. And Justin was just so full of life teasing and hugging his tour bus driver. He was working on a perfume line, because he told me once he got sober, he realized he was so high all the time that he forgot how to smell and how beautiful it was to smell again. I remember being back stage and hearing Hate Me, and realizing that is who I've been hanging out with all day! I got badass videos of the show back stage. Justin deserves is every bit as awesome back stage as he is on stage. Thanks for showcasing how awesome Justin really is!
One of the most underrated bands ever.. they are simply amazing... one of the best live acts you'll ever see. JUSTIN Furstenfeld is a lyrical genius...
I'm a music FREAK, but never listened to Blue October, until a friend turned me on to them with Hate Me in 2016. It was life changing. Now, I'm one of the biggest Blue October fans. I know all of their songs. Justin is the best singer/songwriter in the last 20 years. I got to meet him two years ago in Phoenix and he is one of the nicest, sweetest men on the planet. His lyrics have touched me more than he'll ever know.
I honestly had no idea who this guy was until I randomly saw his acoustic cover of “I Miss You” by Blink 182 a few months ago. I immediately looked him up, found out his band’s name, and then watched the video for “Hate Me”. As a jaded punk rocker in my 30’s that used to be too pretentious to give popular music the time of day, I’m here to say that song changed my life instantly. It truly is great. I can’t believe it took me nearly 15 years to find it but I’m glad I did.
The Foiled album got me through some of the absolute worst moments of my life. Blue October is hugely underrated. Justin's songwriting is some of the most honest of our entire generation. Loved this video!
That album got me through my divorce. My kids tell my husband, "You have no idea, how much this band means to her." They go to all the shows (as long as they are free) with me. I love, Love, LOVE Blue October.
I am from Texas and i was in my work truck. I love tonlisten to professor of rock while i work. I was listening to this video about blue octobwrs hate me song and he played a snippet of it. The part where his mom jus says " Hi this is your mother" and i just burst into tears! I lost mom going on 4 years ago and this little part of that powerful song just made me bawl like a child. Music is power. Music is a time machine. Music is love and everything.. i love you mom!
I LOVE 💙 YOU JUSTIN. I LOVE 💙 ALL OF YOU GUYS. REMEMBER THAT YOU ARE WORTHY OF HAPPINESS. YOU ARE WORTHY OF LOVE. YOU ARE ALL BEAUTIFUL, WONDERFUL, AMAZING AND UNIQUE INDIVIDUALS. DONT EVER GIVE UP. KEEP UP THE GOOD FIGHT. I HOPE YOU’RE HAPPY. I HOPE YOU HAVE A BLESSED DAY. GOD BLESS YOU AND YOURS. MUCH PEACE ✌️, LOVE 💙, UNITY AND RESPECT ✊!!!
13 years ago, one of my bosses accidentally introduced me to Blue October. He had a monster download on a USB drive of music. First it was "You Make Me Smile" and I thought it was a Peter Gabriel song because of the tone of voice and the production mix. Then, there was "18th Floor Balcony." Then, I got the album "Foiled" and "Hate Me" became my favorite. We all identify with the hurt that we have caused others. It kind of reminded me of the regretful tone of the Johnny Cash version of "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails. Anyway, bravo to Justin and friends for bringing us this heart-wrenching message.
@@richardplunkett2550 Thank you...I have a feeling that I will recognize some songs along the way. I realized that I recognized the song featured in this video.
The Entire Foiled Album Is Incredible.. Each Of Thier Albums Have Stand Out Tracks, But Hate Me Is Honestly One Of The Weakest Tracks On Foiled. Into The Ocean, Drilled A Wire, X-Amount Of Words, Everlasting Friend, Overweight, You Make Me Smile... Those Are The Best Imo
@tylerroam9867 "let it go" was probably my favorite song on that album, but the whole thing is so good it's really hard to pick one that's the best. They have so many good songs
I remember the day so clearly. 2006 Being depressed in highschool and having my mom drive me to bestbuy so I could buy this album. The emotion in Justin's voice helped me get through alot since then . Years later Home became my wedding song and my wife and I still listen to Blue October and our daughter dances to them as well.
I discovered Blue October during my divorce and it was the Foiled album. I was at my lowest, most depressed point in my life. I have no doubt that this album saved my life. It spoke to me on a level that made me think that no matter how bad things were, there was a glimmer of hope. I have been a fan of BO ever since. the quarantine sessions got me through the pandemic as well. Music is a life-line sometimes.
I took my boys to see Blue October in Fort Wayne (IN) a couple of years ago. My oldest son was a fan through me, the youngest was along for the ride. They were both in the front row off to the side of the stage. At one point, Justin jumped down from the stage and ran past them. The look on their faces was priceless after he gave them "hi fives". I wish I would have taken a picture of that, but it probably would have spoiled the moment. My thanks to Justin for that awesome bonding experience with my sons.
Great song. Excellent album. Fantastic band. This particular song went straight to my heart and soul. I'm bipolar and I could relate. The mother's message kills me. That was straight out of my life. Thank you Justin, your creation touched me.
Loved watching Justin talk about the scene in the video with his mom...big hugs to them both ❤️ To him for having written such a powerful and painful song, and to her for going through everything and loving him throughout. I'm glad it worked out for both of them ❤️
There is no band or singer songwriter on the planet who brings it real like Justin Furstenfeld and Blue October. I have met the band and Justin one on one, several times over the years and I am happy and proud of them for what they bring to the music table and for carrying on the music and growing as much as they have as men, fathers, husbands, brothers, and friends.
I'm so glad you did a video on Blue October and this song. They are truly underrated, but so amazing. Hate Me is what got me introduced to them back in 2006, but they have so many great albums. Home is one of my most favorite albums of all time. IMO Justin is a true poet. His lyrics are so heartfelt and heart wrenching, you'd have to be soulless to listen to a Blue October song and not feel something.
Thanks for putting the spotlight on Blue October, Professor! They’re a bit outside your usual lane but they’re one of the few bands I respect from that decade. 👍
Two of my favorite things, Professor of Rock and Blue October!!! I'm 57 and obsessed with them, my friends think I'm crazy. I know every single song on every album and listen to them all night long, every night.
I remember running home each day from intermediate school, and sitting in front of the radio for hours, waiting for 'Hate Me' to come on. Hearing Blue october sing was the best part of my life that year, and that song let me fall in love with the band.
I first encounter this band obviously a bit late in the 2010's with a song called "Bleed Out". What a gut wrenching heart pulling song. This guy just seems to be on the cutting edge of pain rock and can take your emotions and just rip them every which way. A great underrated band
Having dealt with mental health issues off & on for many years, Blue October put out songs that I could relate to on a very personal level. Their music was and remains cathartic for me. Elliot Smith is another musician whose music got me through some hard times and still does. RIP Elliot, gone but not forgotten.
This was and still is one of my most favorite songs. It deeply affects me. I’m glad Justin made it through that terrible time in his life. I hope everyone who sees this fights through their pain and keeps going.
Thank you so much for featuring this AMAZING BAND! All their songs are so amazingly life altering for so many people for so many different reasons. All their songs in my opinion are platinum hits but to this day I have to say “DEBIS” is my go to song!
My favorite favorite band. They put everything into their music. So much talent! and Justin is a genius with lyrics. If you dont know the band.. start from their first album and listen all the way thru. It is a beautiful story of recovery and redemption. 💙💙💙
I am so happy you're talking about one of my most favorite bands ever. Justin's ability to write songs that feel like he's been watching you and you only but yet hundreds of thousands who feel the same prove we're not alone even when we feel we're at our loneliest. I've been going to their concerts since the mid to late 2000 and I just saw them again on 10/10/23 and WOW what a beautiful difference he has made in his life. As much as I loved & related to the earlier & darker works, I have to say, I'm so loving this happy, goofy, effervescence glow he has about him now and it shows so much in these newer albums and shows. You leave just feeling happy. I wish him all the continued success and all the happiness life has to offer. The entire band & management, friends & family deserve the same for never having given up on him. Now if I can just get the money to see them again next year in Nashville cause they will be playing The Ryman. What a perfect venue for a perfect band.
This album still is brutally emotional. So much pain, hurt and regret. It's truly beautiful. Hate me, into the ocean and Congratulations r still in heavy rotation on my life soundtrack.
Love Blue October. I was introduced to this band by an ex-fiance. Have seen them live multiple times. Justin is a great songwriter.......... really raw. I like Ryan Delahousse and his violin. Reminds me of my other favorite band Kansas. Deep inspiring lyrics and good musicianship from both bands. Thanks for this Professor. Glad I researched this.
Love love love Blue October and Hate me is such a powerful and moving song that touched so many people. When this song first came out I would listen to it in my car with the windows rolled down blasting it. I played it so much that my 2 sons knew every word and would sing it with me.
This song and album were my introduction to Blue October in 2006. I then bought every album from their back catalog, and haven't missed an album since. Saw them live about 6 or so times. Great band.
I had no idea who Justin or Blue October were until I saw him featured in your "There is a Light That Never Goes Out" video and now I'm a HUGE fan. Thank you for introducing me to him!!
A Phenomenal Band, An Amazing Album, & The Song That Started It All, For My Wife & Myself. We were on our third road trip as family headed to Rapid City, South Dakota, from the Inland Empire of Southern California. We were listening to Sirius XM along the way. When while driving through Utah, we heard "Hate Me" for the first time. Once we heard it, we were hooked on Blue October's music. Upon our arrival to Rapid City, we looked for "Foiled" & listened to it continuously for the rest of the trip. We have been fortunate enough to see Blue October performing live six times, over the past thirteen years. We have also completed our collection of Blue October's music, from "The Answers" to "This Is what I Live For", including all three live albums, plus all three dvds/blu-rays. Justin Furstenfeld writes such poetic lyrics with such heartwarming, & heartbreaking passion. Thank You Justin.
Justin, my wife and I saw you walking on the River Walk in San Antonio in May 2016 when you had your concert at the Aztec Theater. You literally walked past us on the river walk, you had a shopping bag and we turned and saw you from the back and spoke to each other saying, " that was totally Justin right?" it was just so neat to have seen you in real life just a normal person, going shopping and we didnt want to go up to you because we are not star-struck people, but its this memory we will have forever knowing we walked right by you! We love your music! We have seen you several times in Houston at the House of Blues and the Woodlands Pavillion, and seeing you in San Antonio was so much fun! Hope you and your family are doing well! We love your music! :)
Blue October is my favorite band of all time I heard "hate me" on the radio and fell in love I've never been touched by music in the same way that they touched me Justin's lyrics are everything the musical composition combined with it sounds like heaven to me I'm excited to say I get to see them this year in November ive seen them every time they've been here since I was 18yrs old
When I first heard this band I was going through a really bad time and "Dirt Room' spoke to me as I had a rage in me. As I started to recover "Fear" spoke to me. During COVID I would watch Justin to get me through it as my mom passed. What a tremendous song-writer
Oh Justin...can only hope for the best for you. You write from the heart and your raw emotions touched so many of us. Thank you for staying the course and creating this great song.
You got some great interviews man. You're so comfortable on camera and really touch on the small things that people miss. Excellent interview and thanks to Justin for being awesome. Good stuff brother.
I just seen Blue October at Saratoga Springs on 8/19/2022. I instantly became a huge fan. I now can't stop listening to them. He sounded GREAT live. Awesome band. I'm just sorry it took me 49 years to find them but the good news is that now my 15 year old daughter is a fan as well. Now she is rocking a Blue October t-shirt.
Love this song, and the band! I never knew how much this song in particular had helped me 10 years ago, until just recently! Ive always loved it, and listened to it ( and teared up every damn time!) and thought about what I've put my Dad through growing up. Thank you Justin, and Prof!!!!!
I’ve been listening since 2004/2005… I’m only 29, Justin’s words helped me through REALLY hard times. “Hate Me” is my alarm every morning. Justin’s moms voice gives me chills. It reminds me of my moms voicemails. 😕 I’m so proud of you Justin! You’re a super-hero and you don’t even know it!
Yes! This band got me through a brutal divorce in the mid-aughts. My sis and I went to see Blue October in NYC. Phenomenal show! As an extra bonus , we got to go the venue afterparty with the band, and spoke to Justin. So amazing and down to earth. Ran into him again when leaving. He was coming down the stairs, garment bags slung over his shoulder walking to the tour bus. He smiled and said ‘Hey, it’s the ‘Trouble Sisters’ , we shared a laugh and wished him well. Unforgettable.❤️
My mom actually left me messages like that after I moved to Texas from Cali to get clean from Heroin. After I got clean, after I relapsed on some other dumb shit while living here, my mom got sick. A year later we found out it was ALS... For her funeral a Producer friend of mine helped me make a song of her voicemails to "Oh Mother" ( C. Aguilera). A year later I saw Blue October live at the Granada. I cried all the way through the set, I needed that time kinda alone among many to let go some of the pain. So thank you Justin for being so honest in your songs.
Calling You was one of the few songs I heard at the athletic club that I said, hey, I actually enjoyed this. I never really looked into them more but I'm glad you chose to interview them. The 80s stuff will probably always be the main thing on your channel, but it's awesome you have these to remind us that you're looking for stuff from all eras.
An incredible album and song. I’ve recently watched the live version on RUclips and I couldn’t believe that with the raw emotion and crowd participation it made the song even better (even though I thought that would be impossible). Love the content.....keep up the great work !!!
It has always been a favorite of mine. I relate so much to it for same and yet different reasons. Amazing and heart wrenching in the same song. I started getting choked up during interview. Thank you for all your hard work in bringing all these wonderful interviews to the masses.
I’m so excited! I just watched a different video of yours with a Blue October album peeking out on the shelf behind you... (Black Crowes 🥰 a special fav from that year!) maybe? I love your show so much. I was born in 1970, so our popular songs and Dad albums are in common. It was an accident that I happened to hear Blue October...One month before I could see them Live! 😘 And then you guys talked about Joy Division! 🥰😀😉 Thanks, Professor. I’m a huge fan.
I saw them in Austin when I was a teen. Around 2002. I have always loved them and still cry and have a full emotional breakdown listening to their music. I'll never love a group more. They open up about all they have been thru and most of us have been there. It hits home for so many. Thank you for this interview.
I have cried several times to this song. Just thinking about the shit I put my mom through as a child and young adult.
Good man for saying so 🙂🕊💞👍💙.
It seems like everyzeeone I love and/or care about dies, so please Hate Me. Don't be cursed. Hate Me Today
I'm very rude to my mom and grandma and I keep forgetting that one day they won't be here.';;..
well said.
you’re not alone, because i was the same way
Blue October live is like going to church with nothing left to live for and then leaving saved. One of the most under rated bands in rock history.

Justin is an amazing man with a crazy story. His music means so much to me.
Exactly.😊 Great point.
Blue October & Justin Furstenfeld’s music helped save my life - literally, a few years ago. I’m so grateful for their musical gifts of honesty.
Their first couple albums will always be my favorite. Great band who will always hold special place in my heart
I didn't know them. Then by chance I found them. Justin reads my mind. I love how he gets it.
I went to get tattooed at my friend's tattoo shop in state college PA a couple years ago and this guy was just in there chilling. super nice guy.
I first encounter this band obviously a bit late in the 2010's with a song called "Bleed Out". What a gut wrenching heart pulling song. This guy just seems to be on the cutting edge of pain rock and can take your emotions and just rip them every which way.
A great underrated band
He hugged me once! An amazing heartfelt guy!
Oh my gosh. I love that you love Blue October. And Any Man in America is incredible.
Having dealt with mental health issues off & on for many years, Blue October put out songs that I could relate to on a very personal level. Their music was and remains cathartic for me.
Elliot Smith is another musician whose music got me through some hard times and still does.
RIP Elliot, gone but not forgotten.
I cried watching this
As a mom, this story hit me from a different perspective. That little baby that grew inside your body will always be your little boy. No matter what.
Dad's can also say that the baby was once a sperm cell in daddy's body.
@@ColtraneTaylor not exactly
This was and still is one of my most favorite songs. It deeply affects me. I’m glad Justin made it through that terrible time in his life. I hope everyone who sees this fights through their pain and keeps going.
Finally. My favorite band. Great job.
I'm with you
Thank you so much for featuring this AMAZING BAND! All their songs are so amazingly life altering for so many people for so many different reasons. All their songs in my opinion are platinum hits but to this day I have to say “DEBIS” is my go to song!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE this song!!! Justin is so real and raw.... the acoustic version is even more powerful. Thank you, Professor!! ❤
My favorite favorite band. They put everything into their music. So much talent! and Justin is a genius with lyrics. If you dont know the band.. start from their first album and listen all the way thru. It is a beautiful story of recovery and redemption. 💙💙💙
Best interview you’ve done yet. Powerful
Blue October keeps me going to this day. They are my saving grace!
3:10 Man, thank you for shouting out for Stay, glad it resonated with you too, my friend!
Great band.
Hands down I love this band. Their music has lifted me out of dark places. They just continue to just put out great music. Thank you Justin
best Love Song Ever!
This song brought Blue October to me. And have never left!
I had no idea who Justin or Blue October were until I saw him featured in your "There is a Light That Never Goes Out" video and now I'm a HUGE fan. Thank you for introducing me to him!!
This song’s certified gold and tugs at my heart when I hear it. 🙏🏻🤘🏻
Blue october is my favorite band. Their songs are so emotional and amazing. I love them
Outstanding Justin pure and simple 😊
I'll never forget the way this song affected me. Fantastic lyrics, 6
Love this song so much. It’s very powerful even if you can’t directly relate. There’s so much emotion.
I love Blue October!
Been listening to these fellers since day one. They are still on my top 3.
I absolutely love Blue October. Many blessings to you Justin. I'm so proud of you. Keep up the great job 👍💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙
this song to me speak a thousand words in emotionalness. it's my mom's and i song to send love from miles away.
The live version of Hate Me.... truely amazing
The honesty of his lyrics are second to none
Absolutely love Justin…this was amazing 💙
I've love this song. It's what made me fall in love with Blue October . Love them to this day. 💙💙💙💙
Love this song, and the band! I never knew how much this song in particular had helped me 10 years ago, until just recently! Ive always loved it, and listened to it ( and teared up every damn time!) and thought about what I've put my Dad through growing up. Thank you Justin, and Prof!!!!!
They are my absolute favorite band and have been since highschool.
That was an absolutely wonderful interview. "Hate Me" is a real tear jerking song and the video really gets to me also.
Check out Stay,. Fear
That’s my boy! Justin is the real deal. Very talented yet humble.
Foiled was the album that got me into Blue October and I have been a fan ever since.
I’ve been listening since 2004/2005… I’m only 29, Justin’s words helped me through REALLY hard times.
“Hate Me” is my alarm every morning. Justin’s moms voice gives me chills. It reminds me of my moms voicemails. 😕
I’m so proud of you Justin! You’re a super-hero and you don’t even know it!
This song just hits different. I cried to it so many times in my youth, it's just so beautiful and raw!
Omg,love this band!Thanks Justin.
Jus is amazing.what he did for me…. Unforgettable!!!!!!❤
I hope you're happy is a great song from blue october .
Love this Band I sas them in Las vegas when i lived there and in 2 wks going to see them again...
Professor love💛 the anticipation on what your going to talk about next, yes, this was some smooth music then!!⚘✌
It has always been a favorite of mine. I relate so much to it for same and yet different reasons. Amazing and heart wrenching in the same song. I started getting choked up during interview. Thank you for all your hard work in bringing all these wonderful interviews to the masses.
I so love this song. It relates to many including myself but for different reasons.
And then you guys talked about Joy Division! 🥰😀😉
Thanks, Professor. I’m a huge fan.
Thanks for the interview/ I am Blessed by Justin and his honesty.
Beautiful song. Wonderful video. Thanks again Professor of Rock!
I saw them in Austin when I was a teen. Around 2002. I have always loved them and still cry and have a full emotional breakdown listening to their music. I'll never love a group more. They open up about all they have been thru and most of us have been there. It hits home for so many. Thank you for this interview.
