  • Captain George shows his Methods to catching more tuna on the chunk bite. Rigging is crucial to catching any fish and it is especially so
When it comes to top predators like
Tuna. Using these rigging techniques you will be able to increase your odds at a bite and land
more tuna. George shows us how he uses 40# seaguar Fluorocarbon leader and a #4 Owner Ringed Gorilla hook when chunking for tuna in New Jersey waters.

How is it reeling the swivel through the guides? I would imagine with a fish on that could be kinda sketchy? Also doesn't that mess up the ring guides? Just curious.

We use the wind on swivels. They aren’t supposed to go through ring guides only wind on roller guides. Many people like the standard ball bearing swivels better and say they have had these break going through guides or crotch break. I personally never have had that issue. I like to rig longer leaders then be able to wind them directly onto the reel to eliminate the need for a extra guy on the leader if you have multiple hookups. Also think the longer leader helps get bites or if you need to grab the leader you have more to grab. If your fishing for giants or something that is really going to tax your equiptment then may want to opt for the standard ball bearing swivels. I believe the 300pound swivels are what the big giant fisherman use something about the wire on the smaller sized swivel cutting through the line.

Not catching a giant on 80lb line or those little reels.
    Still great vid!

Do you recommend doing the copper wire riging set up on a party boat

    • @Gonefishinnj

Personally we ALWAYS rig our chunks like this. It takes a bit more time, but we feel it catches more fish and lasts longer while drifting. You will be trying to catch the same tuna we are after, so I’m certain it will be a benifit for you while chunking. Let us know how you make out! Tight lines

Palomar knot has lower breaking strength and starts to slip after 30lb test; Sd knot for 30lb test and above

Lol all about stealth using 40lb flouro and a heavy duty ringed hooked? Let’s reel swivels through ringed guides. Stupidity. Never a need to use that light of a leader much less paired with a hook like that. And no ringed hooked unless you’re trying to use live bait. And your rod repair guy will love you.

Our way certainly isn’t the only way to do it, but it works for us! Feel free to make your own videos showing your techniques to help others improve their catch ratios. Tight lines

@@CJfishing2024 Haha you still around huh? I remember you swinging and losing codfish because you were a pro. Breaking rods. You’re just as smart as this guy. It’s not even experience, it’s called common sense. Something clearly you two lack

Such harsh words here. To answer the first guys question. It’s a fact that leader size has made a difference. Some nights we can’t even get bites on 40 but you will mark fish then switch to 30 and get bites. It definitely makes a difference. Also the hook is buried in the bait. It makes no difference. You could even cork the bait to counterbalance the weight of the hook if you felt a need. And most of our rods are all wind on roller guides. I caught ton of fish in my lifetime I’m sure you have to. The guy making this video probably caught more then both of us combined. I don’t do everything exactly like he does but anyone can learn a thing or two from someone with more experience then they do.
