    I don't think Kurt ever placed emphasis on truly learning chords by the book. That's what made the sound so distinctive.

    • @cakedog2608
      @cakedog2608 3 года назад +6

      The chords will sound the same as long as you're holding the strings.
      This is just (Em) and (G) over and over. Very standard chords that everyone uses. He's not doing anything particularly unorthodox in this song.

    I've heard Kurt mention in interviews that he didn't study things like pentatonic scales, or arpeggios because he believed they stunted musical growth. So, it makes sense that his chords would be less traditional. I never really realized how different his playing style was until this video explained some of it. Good Video

      One thing is because kurt is a left-handed guitarist and most chord charts are for right handed guitarists. My opinion.

      Very astute observation. Believe it or not, I had forgotten that Kurt was left handed. I am naturally left handed as well, but my dad encouraged me to learn guitar right handed when I first started trying to learn as a kid, because he told me it would be easier in the long run, and he wasn't wrong. That was a decades old memory for me, and pretty good advice in hindsight. I guess that stort of stuck with me over the years when I started learning guitar again.

    Thanks for the great tutorial. It is interesting the way individuals actually reveal themselves through their guitar playing. You cannot do John Lennon guitar, for example, unless you aggressively strum the guitar, almost like your angry. Norwegian Wood comes to life when you really attack the strings. Lennon was this angry kind of guy. Here you see Cobain, kinda layed back, a bit "sloppy" but everything with a kind of purpose. It's him, in his guitar. Once you become competent wtih the guitar and you acfually begin to express yourself every guitarist is different and to get thier sound you have to climb into their heads a little. This was good because it revealed the uniqueness of Cobain's guitar playing. Thanks again.

    The first chord is Em (actually Ebm because of the tuning), even if you don´t play the third the harmony is implicit, so the chord is still the same. In the electric versions Kurt used to play Em with all the notes.

    Really great! Have been playing it that way for decades except I did a full E major rather than one finger mute the 4th string. In fact it seemed easier for a beginner to play it the sloppy one finger way. Perhaps that's how it was born for Kurt.
    Really love the pinky finger touch up strum after the F#, didn't know that, sounds perfect though.
    The only thing I've been doing which I thought sounded pretty good or right was after 'I can't see you every night' the 4 strum E then A then C, I would do 2 down strum E, slide up to 7th fret in bar shape of C but on 7th fret, a higher sounding E 3 quick down up down, then down to the A 2nd fret 3 down strums, and then one down on the C bar chord 3 fret!

    Excellent video. Those one or two finger power chords with accidental major thirds or sus4 tonalities were his signature style. Dumb and Teen Spirit are good examples of that as well. However, I would also mention the usage of strumming carelessly open strings on upstrokes while switching chords, that's another thing which makes the riff groove and is also prominent on many Nirvana songs (again, Teen Spirit namely). I was also surprised about that F# chord seventh note on the B string, I was sure it would have been just an open high E but that sounds right as well.

    Great lesson Justin, I've been playing this one for awhile and found a few things in here that will help me get it a little more authentic. One variation that should also be mentioned is that in the Unplugged version after the guitar solo during the instrumental version of the chorus without vocals Kurt will start by playing the low E5 (0-2-2) that you showed and then will move it up an octave during the second half of the bar (7-9-9 starting on the A string) and then play the A5 (5-7-7 starting on the low E string) before moving to the same C5 as what you showed. Watching the unplugged video it appears he only does this after the guitar solo but plays the chorus while singing the way you showed it every other time. Otherwise I think this was spot on, thanks!

    For the G chord his index IS down- but it's not fretting the note. It's rather- muting it. I think. It's either muting the A string or IS fretting the A string but the D string is muted by that finger. Not sure which but play with both.

    Maybe I'm to much of a beginner but I'm having trouble with the barr chords i know you said what they were but I'm not exactly sure what strings my fingers go on cause when I look up charts they don't have the shapes you played

      Its more of a power chord with octave of the root being played on the 3rd finger

    The way its played sounds like a beginner wrote it. But as the song goes on you can tell the writer knew what they were doing.

      Fun fact, Kurt didnt know any chord names or music theory. He just wrote them by ear. So i suppose in a way, a beginner did write it :)
