This is actually very good. At work, lots of us do personal email, banking, Skype, google hangout, check for other Jobs. Basically do our personal business. (Hopefully we don't abuse it as this is company time) You do not want to do that on company computer. Usually we have spare monitors, one can use that for this. Awesome option. Now I don't feel iffy when I have to go to my bank website.
Hey, Great video. I use to use my note 2 as a PC, the issue i had was the massive amount of space taken up by the apps for no good reason such as the top bar in youtube and the address bar in chrome as you can see in your video. I got around this by installing the xposed framework and the app settings module. you can change the resolution of the apps and more, so essentially making certain parts of apps load smaller or to load the tablet version, this gave a much more PC like experience. I have not done this for a year or so now, not wanting to void warranty of newer devices in case i need it,

Android O has secondary display features in its code, right? I feel like that should be mentioned here. Once again Samsung doing it’s own property thing JUST before it’s officially released on Android (KNOX, Fingerprint Scanning, Multi-window, etc).

If you have a decent cpu and some internal space to spare (I wouldn't run this from an sd card) then this is kinda cool. Although you might be better off just buying a raspberry pi

it is possible, easiest way is to use a bluetooth keyboard/mouse, or, use a wireless keyboard/mouse combo that runs off a unified receiver.

In order to do this do I have to have an internet connection in addition to my phone connection? I'm wanting the ease of a computer vibe with no internet outside of my phone. I ask bc it doesn't work on a tv. In order to "cast" my smart phone to my smart tv, internet is required. And my phone's hotspot doesn't count evidently.
Any ideas for phones that do not support mhl?

i cracked my screen and cannot use the touch screen feature to access anything on the phone. is there a way to control it from PC to move all pictures, files over to a usb? is there a way to do all that through the "restart bootloader", "recovery mode", or "start" menu from the recovery mode screen?

yonshing lin I hope you figured it out or someone helped but when you connect your phone to PC/Laptop via USB data cable, set your phone as media device and from there on PC you can see the media and grab and drop into documents, photo, music. Whatever it may be.

it is called "Samsung MHL adapter" however there are different versions, you need version 2.0

+benbennit Yes absolutely you could cast, then you could keep the phone in your pocket. But, the advantage of MHL is that there is minimal input lag, and you can charge the phone while you are using it.
I totally miss understood you, I thought you mirrored the pc to android screen, am I still wrong. If I can mirror pc games to android devices would be awesome, since I'm trying to use this device for Virtual reality gogles.
In this video, the phone is the PC. However, there are some apps that allow you to use your android device as a 2nd or 3rd screen for your PC or Mac, but they are buggy and arent suitable for what you want.
would Google Docs and Sheets have worked better than Word and Excel?

Wadye Bel are you using Next launcher or Next 3D launcher? I find it works great with Next 3D, I haven't tried Next.

Wadye Bel Have you got rotation lock on? check in your settings and disable, otherwise try using a rotation locker from the play store

This video is 6 years old, Samsung S4 goes for $14 used on eBay. Seeing this all neatly presented with niche apps to enhance the pc functionalty really throws a big STFU in the face of the idiots who swear by their overpriced by $900 tech. And whats most poetic, is droid phones when not the latest model flagship have a stigma of being someone's 4th or 5th choice when working with the budget they have, so in some people's limited minds they would envision such a phone like this as for someone riding a bus not getting the full smartphone luxury of the times, to me its like a heavyset guy in sweaty grey gym sweatpants and a beanie looking all torn, but once ready with gear like mouse and keyboard and display equipped the phone emerges out of its 4 layers of oversized clothes to be a body by zeus chiseled buff prizefighter boxer in training puposely sweating in low prestiege. Thats the hidden power and complexity of droids truly revealed to the world even BEFORE fancy samsung dex dock standards were made in the past 2 years that was there all along just discreetly with no fanfare or hype to the masses.

+TabalugaDragon With MHL you can charge the phone at the same time - see the video at the 0:30 to see the charging port on my adaptor. The MHL adaptor I'm using in this video is an 11pin 3rd gen Samsung MHL adaptor, it gives me the option to either plug in a charging cable or not. Some MHL adaptors don't give you the option, and you MUST connect a charger to power the connection. Please note: that there are several versions of MHL and they are not all compatible with each other.

+Bugs DX You can. The HDMI connector has a micro-USB slot next to it so you can plug your phone in to charge while it's connected.

+Katzelle3 If the port provided more power than the phone is using, there would be enough energy to charge it. It depends on how many amps the port is able to provide. A 2A port would provide plenty of energy if the phone supports charging at that speed.

I have that same Samsung MHL adapter or w/e. Had it for years. Tried several phones. Galaxy 3 to 5. Nothing. Multiple Monitors. What the hell am I missing? All it does is charge the phone...

I couldn't locate any such option on Android 6 or 7 (w/e I may have). Turns out, after looking a bit more into it, You need the 5 pin to 11 pin (or vise versa maybe) adapter to actually get anything from the Samsung...Even with the Samsung branded MHL apparently. *Stupid AF.* Ordered one for $2 just to see it work and likely never touch it again. lol

I am trying with my Logitec combo that i use with laptop..it doesn't show on the phone blue tooth list..it work normaly when connected to OTG multi box (same as your)

The K220 is uses RF wireless, it doesn't have bluetooth, that is why it won't show on the bluetooth list.

+NIKOLAOS ZOYMPANEAS yes it is possible, but as the phone only has one connection port, you would either need to get something like a Samsung Smart Dock (which has now been discontinued) which would allow you to plug in up to 3x USB devices and still have HDMI connection, or you would need to cast your screen to a monitor, or not use an external monitor at all. But if you are really keen on doing something like this, search for Microsoft Continuum.

***** yes, you can. MHL can provide power to the connected device. AFAIK for 5 pin MHL devices it is a requirement. Here on the Galaxy S4 though, it is using Samsung's 11 pin MHL cable and isn't required but does support it if you need it. The MHL adapter itself has a microUSB port for power. Hope that answers your question.

You pair it just like you would connect any other bluetooth device. Make sure the keyboard is on, select it in the phone's bluetooth menu, you may be prompted to type in a connection code on the keyboard, and that is pretty much it.
+X2KO the wireless mouse mouse i have is composed of two parts : a mouse and a small usb chip . So the small usb chip must be connected to the Android as i guess . Or it might be connect to any power source ?

hamdi f Sounds like you have an RF wireless mouse not a bluetooth mouse, you will need to use a USB OTG (USB on the go) cable to connect it to your android phone

so I'm thinking that HDMI connection kit is the thing I need. It looks like I should be able to plug it into my phone, hook up a mouse and an HDMI cable to a monitor. Is that all I need to do to get my phone to display to the monitor? the screen is broken(totally unresponsive and blank) and I would like to access my text messages and be able to save my pictures from the phone to move to my new one.
+rattymcrat99 What phone do you have? Not all phones support MHL or HDMI, some use another alternative known as Slimport, while some phones don't offer any video out functionality at all. If your phone does have MHL, then you also need to be aware which version, there is 5pin and 11pin MHL.

Is it Droid RAZR MAXX or just Droid MAXX?Because, the Droid MAXX doesn't support TV out via cable, the only choice for that device is to wirelessly cast to another screen with either Miracast or Chromecast. If it's the Droid RAZR MAXX then it does support TVout, for that device you'd need a micro HDMI Type D 1.4 cable.

Sorry, Droid RAZR MAXX has HDMI support. Droid MAXX doesn't. If the phone doesn't support TV out then there is no microUSB cable you can get that will work. To connect wirelessly you will need a miracast compatible device or a Google Chromecast.

One of my friend's note 3 is broken ( i mean the lcd ) and he gave to recover the data, so my question is that does it need any permission of setting before it show the display to external source? Bcz his cellphone is password protected and usb debugging is also not enabled which i why i'm unable to get excess to anything from anywhere around but if this will work by just plug n play then it will be a great life saviour..

It may work but it will largely depend on what phone he has - not all phones support video out.
as i mentioned in my comment that he also has note 3, so is there still some doubts about whether it will work or not??
sorry missed you mentioning Note 3. Look for a Samsung 11pin MHL 2.0 adapter. Just plug it in and it should work fine (unless there is something else broken on the device) with out the need to change any settings

Yeah. It's the same principle. Monitor, TV, projector - they're all displays. The mouse and keyboard are connected to the phone, not the monitor. So, it really doesn't matter what kind of display you use.

No you don't because there is nothing that needs to be "changed back", once you unplug it it is still just an ordinary Android phone, it's not a new operating system and nothing about the UI has been changed. And yes you can print, I mention this around the 7:40 mark.

Yair Even Or the onscreen keyboard comes back automatically once the physical keyboard connection is lost/disconnected so nothing needs to be put back. You also don't have to use a new launcher, all the apps featured run natively in landscape mode. I do prefer the 3rd party launcher seen in the video (especially compared to touchwiz) it has the added benefit of being able to display the homescreen in landscape but it isn't a requirement. Some phones also natively allow the homescreen to run in landscape (but these are generally the larger phones, like the Xperia Z Ultra for example), there are also apps that will force the homescreen in to landscape if your launcher doesn't natively support this feature, but again this isn't a requirement. If you don't want to run a new launcher then don't, it doesnt affect the ability to use the phone in this way. Hope that makes sense :)
