  • 10th May, 1994 - Nelson Mandela Is Inaugurated As South Africa's First Black President.
On this day in 1994, Nelson Mandela defied three centuries of white-minority rule and decades of racial strife in South Africa, becoming the country’s first-ever black president.
Mandela’s African National Congress (ANC) party won 252 of 400 seats in the first democratic elections and the first multiracial general elections of South Africa’s history and the newly elected National assembly's first act was to elect Mandela as South Africa first president.
His inauguration took place in Pretoria on 10 May 1994, televised to a billion viewers globally. The event was attended by four thousand guests, including world leaders from a wide range of geographic and ideological backgrounds.
