Not to Play devil's advocate, but When Adam ate the forbidden fruit, that kinda did "condemn" Jesus to death (He volunteered to Take our place), but i wouldn't compare a cupcake (even tho it's Not the healthiest) to the explicitly forbidden fruit. My very first boyfriend was the 2nd youngest boy in a large JW family. His mother died when he was 5. His siblings were 18 (boy), 15 (girl), 14 (girl), 11 (boy) & 3 (boy). The oldest boy was already out on his own. The two girls were robbed of their adolescence because they had to raise the two youngest boys, who were robbed of their mother, & the middle boy went off the rails & got all into drugs & alcohol & crime. All the children (except the oldest) were cheated out of a normal childhood & adolescence. 5 lives derailed because their mother died, not from cancer or a car accident, but because she refused to have a blood transfusion.

If ancient man were afraid of evil spirits and offered them present.... well, that is true. They also offered the gifts to their gods.
That's what sacrifices is about. You do a peace offering, or you offer a gift to the j god. It is present all over the Bible. It is present in Genesis. It says that the j god loves the smell of cooked meat. I love the smell as well.
The Jesus sacrifice story is based on that except that it doesn't make any sense. It was an execution by the police officers. That is not a sacrifice.
Also, it promotes the execution of a human so that other humans have a better life.

My best friend growing up was a JW. I spent time at his house quite a bit, and his mom would bring up religion a lot. She did give it a rest from time to time, which was nice. They were still fun people to hang out with. What I liked about my friend was that he rarely talked about religion with me. Mainly it was when I asked, which wasn't a lot. I think that's one thing that I liked about him: that he had respect for me, and we both had an unspoken understanding that it's not cool to try to indoctrinate people relentlessly.

@@pineapplepenumbra Not really sure? But if a little kid's lungs aren't even strong enough to blow out a couple of little candles, then they're likely not physically fit or healthy enough to last the upcoming winter. The family, in that case, would likely either try to help the kid get stronger and healthier...or start the grieving process early, to help get it done easier when the child finally kicked it.
I doubt they were left outside for the wolves? But who knows; mediaeval peasants tended to be less than literate, so there's not much in the way of documentation, especially not that would have survived this long.

I started volunteering in a first grade classroom recently teaching kids to read. We go into the enclosed hallway where it is quiet and the kids can focus away from the noise of the classroom. The teacher came out and told me that it was good that I had the boy I was working with out there reading because he couldn't be inside the classroom right at that moment due to his religious beliefs and from his mother making the request, and that normally he would just be sent to the other first grade classroom. I heard a lot of loud, happy kid noises coming from the classroom. I asked if they were doing something. She said yes, that one of the kids' mother brought a birthday cake and they were going to celebrate. There's 15 kids in the classroom. So the teacher told me to keep him out there and that she'd let me know when he could go back instead the classroom. About a minute after she went back inside, I heard them all singing the happy birthday song. I looked at the kid and could tell he looked both sad and a bit concerned. I said, "You're a Jehovah's Witness aren't you?" He kind of perked up and asked, "Are you one?" I said no. He asked how is it that I knew he was one. I told him that I know they don't celebrate birthdays. He nodded in agreement but also looking down at the same time. The kid is six years old. My heart broke for him. He said that his mom always buys cakes and desserts so it's not a big deal, that that's what the kids are doing in there, just eating cake. I told him that they were celebrating someone's birthday, and that a birthday party is the celebration of someone being born. He looked at me like, "Ooooh!" I said that it isn't bad per say and that his religion just doesn't believe in celebrating those kinds of things along with other holidays. I could see the little gears in his head working. He didn't say anything else about it though nor did I.

The mom didnt really fight for him bcuz he was saying she was mean. I was friends with this kid until high school and I remember him not having birthdays which was weird but like as a kid I was like whatever. But then I remember every year after that his dad threw him a huge birthday party and tons of presents and the whole event lasted like a week. Took him to a local theme park we have here and everything. Told him happy birthday like 50 times a day and stuff.
I was probably like 15 when I asked why he had a birthday week as that was weird and he said he asked his dad the same thing and his dad told him it was "to make up for all the missed birthdays he had when he was young.

They were worried that people would not gravitate towards this character, but George Lucas stuck to his guns, insisting that it was important to teach kids that a good person is not always necessarily a good looking person. Many cultures believed that on a person's birthday, they were more susceptible to attacks by evil spirits. To counter this, friends and family would gather to give good wishes and gifts, which were thought to ward off these spirits. The act of giving gifts was seen as a show of love and goodwill, which could attract positive energy and good spirits.

But then the show uses such a gutwrenching choice (which is fantastically animated, with great voice acting) and uses it as an excuse to mentally torment a young child for wanting to eat a cupcake. These two scenarios are not the same, and should not be treated the same.

So the whole they thought gifts and treats would protect them from evil spirts is half true. The way we celebrate birthdays is kind of mix of a variety of traditions. It wasn't that they thought toys and treats would protect them from evil spirts but rather they would use noisemakers to keep them from ruining the fun of the celebration. Gifts were a way of connecting to others of the community & even as a means of checking in on neighbors like back in the day when people would take baked goods to their neighbors & recive them in return instead of going to get candy for Halloween festivities. Another tradition is that the candles on cake were in some cultures used to honor the gods. Maybe this is why JWs are taught to hate birthdays along with the belief that only bad things happen on birthdays

The cake is such a terrible moral evil that it will bring about armageddon the moment you eat it. /s

I guess I'm a bit evil lol. I would always bring cupcakes on my birthday. And while the JW kids were like in the bathroom we would do the birthday song and such as then they would come back and I would make sure they got a cupcake, but because I was nice and I liked them.

LOL, there's a cat over there. I'm stoked for today. I'm going to my sisters. I'm bringing green bean casserole. Hopefully we can cook it at her place. So it's hot by the time we eat it. Merry Christmas Owen.

9:04 Im not sure if this is true or not but I remember hearing somewhere that in hebrew “yhwh” is said like a breath, the “yh” being an inhale and the “wh” being an exhale, meaning that gods name basically means life

“said like a breath” to mean that you’re not really saying anything at all, just breathing loudly

I love the logic of "two people who were a**holes were a**holes on their birthday so now no one gets to celebrate their birthday ever".

My ex husband's grandma was a jehovah's Witness. She said the only birthday we are supposed to celebrate is Jesus' birthday. Not celebrate Christmas...just celebrate it at Jesus' birthday. Don't give gifts to each other. It's not our day, it's Jesus' day. 🤷‍♀️

yes it’s called a commemoration, and quite literally we just sit there for an hour or so and pass wine and some bread to signify his passing or something 😀

@@jknniferI think that’s one of the reasons JW are not so popular in my country in comparison to Hare Krishna movement where every time you go there they feed you lots of food and on their holidays they make sure to serve like 5-6 courses. On Krishna birthday they even make 101 dishes and serve them all and in some temples in India they make 10k different dishes. It’s interesting that these are both cults originally started in 60-70-s but one of them evolved to be more fun friendly and happiness oriented.

What??? The H really does stand for Herbert? Where does that come from?? My husband (who has never had to church ever or was ever a believer) told me that; I thought he was joking! Now I need a video explaining this, please, Owen!
Happy holidays to you and your family 😊

I don't see a problem with not celebrating birthdays, except when it comes to imposing it on kids and social isolation issues.
