I think a better way is to install the shock without the spring first and determine the maximum amount of compression travel you can get without interference, this gives you the limitations of ride height. If you arbitrarily pick a ride height first, you could be unnecessarily compromising shock travel and the car will ride like the Honda ricer with cut springs.

I been doingbmy home work on isc after seeing a used set for like 1,200 and i have mever seen that brand for bmw e46.
The more i look into the more i want it . Have a shop close by having the n1 on sale for $ 1,400 cad.
But then tgeir the v2 n1, whixh making it harder since thwir over 2 k cad .
Also besidebthe website , tgeir not enough reviews for v2 and the v1 reviews are all date 5 + years

Hey ISC, bought a G37 recently with your coilovers installed onto them. I was wondering if yall have either a replacement spring perch or tips on how to remove the bolt holding the dial, maybe I’m just not using enough force or if it’s corroded beyond repair but I cannot get it to turn. I’m trying to raise the vehicle to a decent height as my town’s roads aren’t the best. Any help is appreciated, I would hate to have to switch back to oem or even switch to a different set of coil overs. Thank you!
When installing the rears i would like to know if u can make a video on how u set up the shock so at ride hide you are in the middle of the shocks travel. Also how to set up your bumpstop in the rear as well
As others have mentioned, I'm curious about the extension of the rear shock. It seems like the shock was fully extended when you set the height. This doesn't really make sense considering the spring was already preloaded. It would seem to me that you would want to have the suspension at full sag when setting the length of the shock. Maybe I missed something 🤷♂️
If you do that you dont get any preload on the spring. Basically what he did was that he jacked the axle up to the ride height he wanted which set 5mm preload to the spring, he then adjusted the shock so it would be at it's neutral position because that is what keeps the preload. You know it's not rocket science, the shock wants to compress while the spring wants to expand
But what he's saying is when you go over a piece of land where one wheel needs to drop down into a dip let's say, and the wheel/shock assembly wants to drop down, with it set like the guy in the video it seems like the shock won't extend itself down past where it sits at normal ride height level.
@@PreludeDude The shock adjustment is setting the absolute lowest point of extension for the rear suspension. Otherwise known as “full droop”. If you hit a big enough bump to lose tire contact with the road, the shock body is what prevents the suspension components from moving too far away from their ideal operating positions, binding, etc.
This includes the spring. if you don’t preload the spring before locking your shock body into place, the spring could become loose and flop around/fall out of the bucket over a large enough bump.
A 10k spring at 5mm preload is handling probably 110 lbs of force. when you add the weight of that corner of the car, it settles to a lower ride height based on the 800 lbs of car corner weight compressing the spring more.

Thank you for this video. I think it's no the most accurate way to judge the divorced spring preload in millimeters by eyes. I wonder what if you make it unequal on left and ride sides? Will it affect the ride experience?
I have ISC on my e46 and they are pretty bouncy, should I check the preload?
If I wanted maxx low and removed the whole adjustment piece in the rear and just ran spring would that get me lower?
What if the rear doesn’t have a collar and lock and is just a shock and spring?
So i can, without ever attaching my rear damper, roughly set my rear ride correct?!?!? Sitting still, I'm thinking the damper will not affect the ride height at all.... yay or nay???? The damper acts like a limiting strap holding a constant preload on that spring in the event that things go zero weight on that wheel during driving.
Just did everything according to how explained. Though I'm experiencing clanking, how do i eliminate that?
When you are adjusting the height of the shock by screwing it's lower portion - you are not mentioning what is the compression position of the shock it self? Is it mid way? Or fully extended? Or compressed?
Fully extended, that's how the spring is kept pre loaded when the suspension is fully extended in it's travel. I think it's the same as a coilover setup, it's just that the spring is somewhere else.

have another serious issue guys, appreciate if you can shed some light on this,
did exactly like in this video, in order get the lowest position, we removed all the adjusters as well, and put 5mm preload as well but still, the shock length is not enough put the lower bolt? my coilovers are eBay once, but im not sure if that is the case here? since at least 1 inch of thread has to be there on the shock body, we threaded 1inch up and jack the swing arm up until the lower bolt meets the shock, I think the pre load number is way above 5mm now, but there is no other way to do it
Ok so if I don't adjust shock and just jack up bucket until shock meets holes, I'm adding too much preload, thus inadvertently lowering the car overall correct?

How far can you take that rear spring perch down to raise the car before it becomes unsafe? They don't mark or state anything in instructions about maximum raising. I know the shocks must have 25mm remaining thread.
Probably a good rule of thumb here too, about an inch of threads into the spring seems ok. It locates and sits on the adjuster so it's not going anywhere but you don't want it to be too extreme.
this video completely changed everything i thought i knew, so you adjust the ride height by that small spring? so why we adjust the shock length? just to match the bolt point yes?
The ride height is adjusted by threading the perch on that spring up or down. The shock length is adjusted to maintain the preload on the spring.

@@pjeipacheco069 Happy new year to you too! Increasing the length of the shock won't affect the ride height unless it's compressing the spring to much. The shock should be set a few mm shorter than the spring too set a pre-load. Did you adjust the shock when you adjusted the perch?
Depending on your vehicle there may be a rubber isolator at the other end of the spring. Perhaps there is a thicker one available. What is the year make and model?
I just bottom out the shock absorber jack up the control arm to line up with the shock and call it a day lol

How do u adjust the height for the rears. I still don’t understand, I messed with the spring perch and nothing happened. I also messed with the shocks. Unbolted and twisted the shock all the way up and it wouldn’t go up any farther. So idk what else to do. Bc racing coilovers br series

you adjust the ride height with the collars on the perch....then adjust the preload by compressing the spring 5-10mm and attaching the shock to hold the adjustment you just made

have a question about setting the rear pre load, what happens if you put a softer spring and the it compresses more, the 5mm preload is not same anymore, whats the rule of thumb for amount of shock body

I just installed the rear springs out of the box and jacked up the hell out of it for the bolt to meet up with the shock! haha not fun at all. the car felt stiff as a mf.

Can you give more idea about what you looking at when you say 3mm of preload?
take a measuring tape and the spring WITHOUT compression on it and measure the length of the spring...lets say it's 200mm...which means if you put 5mm of preload...it should end up measuring 195mm afterwards.

My preloaded spring length in the rear is the same on each side but the shocks became different lengths. How does that happen? Is that normal or should the shock lengths be the same as well?
What if i did not adjust the rear shock to shorter after i adjust the spring shorter?

when I want my e46 m3 to ride not so stiff that need to downshift to 1st gear before any hole in order not to crack my windshield in the city do I need to put more or less preload or is there maybe a different preload for that car let me know
What brand are they? If they are ours I would suggest 5mm. What is the dampening set at, and what valving/spring rate are you running?
They are isc n1 street from BimmerWorld spring rates are 8kg/mm front and 10kg/mm rear dampers are set to all the way to letter S on that adjusting removable allen with nut shape on top
I love how they handle that car on track but I like to take it for a ride in the city sometimes and I’m trying to figure it out how to set them to be more flexible with potholes

Which rear spring perches did you use? I noticed you dont sell them on the ISC site, and it's not very clear if the rear springs come with perches (it kinda looks like it but you don't specifically say so). I'd just like to know if I need to buy any perches, and if so I want them to fit the coilovers ISC sells (E46 M3). Thanks!

It sure helps to add some white lithium spray to the threaded bodies when you're screwing them in and out.

Pre load on the spring has nothing to do with the ride quality.
The spring rate is fixed, compressing it with a bit of pre load will do bugger all, considering the weight of the car will take up at least 20-25mm of the spring when on the ground.
This is very basic physics, and i have only ever seen one company get this right in the 30 years i have been playing with cars.

What affects ride quality? I am pretty low stanced with no wheel gap on 2007 mustang divorced set up, but it doesnt ride all that great. Any suggestions? They are raceland coilovers. Thanks
Cheap coilovers will really affect ride quality. Getting good coilovers will be super beneficial.
I've heard nothing but bad things about racelands. I'm with Justin, you need better quality coils. Buy once and you'll never have to buy again. If you pay $400 for a crappy set of coils, they fail, and you buy another crappy set for $400, you've basically almost paid for a decent set of coils
