How To Adjust Coilovers Properly
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 30 окт 2017
- Today I show you how I adjust the ride height on my 07 WRX that has BC BR Coilovers installed. Occasionally, I would get some rub on hard cornering, and I would hit my front lip on just about everything, so I figured it was time to raise the car up a tad. This is how I do it at home in my garage. I hope this helped! Feel free to comment if you have any questions!

Very helpful. Just put coil over on this last week and with the wider wheel setup I run now I'm rubbing hardcore. Gonna raise mine in the morning. Thanks.
"Look at that wheel gap, that just makes me sick"🤣 same here man, same here.
Lmao 😂 it’s gross 🤢
Man ur a life saver no one has a video like this uploaded
Just got a set of these BC coilovers installed in my 83 Civic. Well worth it and now I know how to raise it up to stock height, it looks great and handles well sitting low but I need it just a little bit more up.
To me it just says that the product is good and easy to install and adjust.
I’ve been trying to find the simplest instructional video like this for months. Thank you so much for uploading your video, and for keeping the video clear of obstructions so we can see what is actually being adjusted. Time to raise my 2010 Focus XR5 up by about a half inch….currently way too low for every day driving. Cheers from down under
Thank you sir. I just bought a miata that was too low. Had the same brand Coilovers, so your instructions made it easy for a novice like me to raise it. Except... you have "clockwise" and "counter-clockwise" mixed up in your comments. And... if you don't loosen the lowest collar, it is super easy to see/measure how much you have raised it.
Thanks for the detailed explanation. I just bought a car with coilovers already installed and I realized it's a little too low for being a dd. I was even thinking about paying to have someone adjust them for me, but it looks way easier than I thought. Thanks for the video!
Adam Morris It’s pretty simple! Save yourself the money and give it a shot 👍
Don’t forget to get an alignment!
Quarter Inch is really Yes, ALL it needed! Thank you for sharing how to do it! GREATLY APPRECIATED!
Good man, just installed mine and it's been awhile since I've done so. Forgot how everything works and this video was simple and straight to the point.
Awesome man! A little refresher is all ya need sometimes 👍
Thank you for keeping this easy and straight to the point. Not 20 minutes of how to take the wheel off. This is extremely helpful. So much so that I'm watching it again 6 months later before I readjust
Bro. THANK YOU so much. This is the exact video I was looking for. I bought a used set of coil lovers years ago and just put em in my car as they were. Later I went back to stock and nooooow I got a brand new set of coil overs and I been watching lots of vids on ride adjusting till I found yours.
Awesome I'm glad this helped! If you have any other questions feel free to ask!
I know this is old or whatever but I can't stop laughing at "coil lovers"
oh man thank you so much for this. i need to lower my front a tad and i was way too scared to even attempt this but now i feel confident because of this video
Same!!! Just had a shop install ksports on my Altima but they dint lower them enough so now I gotta go adjust them a bit
I have been doing it wrong for years by adjusting the top two collars only and have merked my coilovers over the last two years riding super low on pretty much nothing but blown shocks. Somebody told me I was doing it wrong and so I looked into it and I just wanted to thank you
1:45 quick start to adjust 👌
I'm thinking of a set of coilovers for my 2014 Chevy Cruze LT. I wanted a set of 17" aftermarket wheels (tentatively the ESR SR11 or the Enkei RPF1) and a set of these will help the wheels fill out the wheel wells, which is the look I'm after. It's great having a straight forward explanation on how to adjust coilovers and It's good to know how easy they are to install and adjust. It may be late in the year to gear my car up for the driving season, but I'm looking forward to next year when I can install the mods I want on my car.
I am new to coil-overs with the car I just purchased. Thanks for the show and tell with a clear and concise explanation!
You have no idea how much you helped me. I have the same coilovers on my STI and Mazdaspeed and the STI rides way stiffer. I was an idiot and was using the top preload adjustment for height and never touched the bottom. Makes since why it rides so stiff because I was jamming the springs so close. I should have caught on when I was struggling to tighten the collars anymore. I feel like an idiot with how easy it is to do. Thanks man!
Harry Crisp haha that must have been a real rough ride! Glad to help dude, it’s way easier than most people think. Fix that preload and go out and enjoy! 👍
Helped so much! Thanks for the full walkthrough
Tip: If the motion ratio of the damper is not 1:1 with the movement of the suspension, then the amount of length change required to raise/lower the height is not 1:1, either.
Very helpful, my current car is my only
Atm and I’m moving to another state soon and the car was lowered when I got it, to carry my head and other parts I want to use in the future I would need to raise it a little bit to get rid of my wheel rubbing the fenders with the extra weight thanks so much brother 🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵
Outstanding video. Definitely have a better understanding about the adjustments. I am about to put them on my 1970 Camaro Z28 and needed a little more information. Thx..
Happy to help!
3:50am In the morning trying to figure it out . Thank you man for this video !!!
I just fitted HSD coilovers to my S14 and the ride is now awful. I was going to give it to a garage to set up correctly but after watching this simple yet concise video I know I can do it myself. Thanks.
Nice! Glad I was able to save you some money 😎
Broseph THANK YOU 🙏 I just received my GodSpeed Coilovers w/ adjustable Damper, ride height and Camber. I thought I would just slap 👋 em on adjust ride height and be done. I did not know about setting the “Preload” so I was a little confused about what exactly I’ve been tightening. You showed using the top perch w/ “jam nut” to lock preload and loosing bottom perch and turning the top jam nut so that you don’t compress or change preload only ride height.
THANK YOU! ✨
How were the godspeed coilovers?
Kentucky Blugrass mannn the damn Godspeed momo SS had me pissed off so confusing lol this video helped me too lol
Thanks for the video, very helpful for the DIY warriors, thanks for the professional editing too.
Happy to help! Thanks for watching and commenting!
I needed this thank you most videos ran me around this was very helpful I subscribed thanks
Thedevilsreject thanks for the support and glad I could help! 👍
This was the first video I actually understood...great
I have to adjust mine and this was very useful. Thanks!
That's what I like to hear! No problem!
I have a Subaru BRZ and followed the "use the bottom bracket to adjust the ride height" recipe before. I then found myself in a situation where my ride was very harsh on bumps, and yet the height was still too high. I'm talking "almost OEM height" too high, and I'm not a stance boy.
I was lucky to stumble upon a video that recommended the opposite: use the adjustments at the bottom bracket to set the "comfort" (more specifically, to set the correct amount of compression travel) and from there set the ride height using the top lock ring. After some trial-and-error and then analyzing all the before and after measurements, I found out that the preload was set too low. By *adding* preload and screwing the damper into the bottom bracket by the same amount, I was able to significantly *improve* the ride comfort without changing the ride height. I've made a few iterations until I noticed minor rubbing, and then I've undone the adjustments a couple of mm.
After that experience, I came to a conclusion in certain situations (such as cars on the FT86 platform with big tires, such as 245/40R17 in my case), once the correct damper length (adjustment at the bottom bracket) is set, the only correct way to adjust the ride height is by changing the preload. Many say that "too much preload can negatively affect the ride comfort" which is true, but my point is that in a certain range of preload, it's in fact a better tool for adjusting the ride height than the bottom bracket.
I just did it like you showed us. It worked thank you so much my friend.😃
Thanks for the help, dude!!
Thank you 1 million times, I had done it wrong while trying to lower my car and was really confused😂 I understand now, great video
One of those things that's so simple and confusing at the same time. BC coilovers, great piece of kit.
This video helped me out with adjustments on my is250, a measure tape is a must
Best video for bc coilovers. Very informative. Thanks man .
I will be installing my brand new bc br series this weekend on my srt4. Won't lower it though. Not much wheel gap so will be fine .
Why even get coilovers if you’re not altering the height?
@@seanwilks7712
Its not all about height. What about damping , ride comfort and handling.
Like I said i don't have much wheel gap in my car. Got bigger wheels
@@azimaslam6375 good luck getting ride comfort with BC coilovers...lol.
And nothing you do will make your Neon worth driving, especially in the handling department.
Straight to the point and easy, good video bro 🤙
Thanks man!
Good video, clear, easy, not too wordy, thanks!
Thank you! This is when I first started RUclips and didn’t think for a second that this video would catch on but I guess I did something right 🤷♂️
Great video short simple and to the point thumbs up
Christopher Fierro thank you!!
Simple, Straight to the point, and very helpful!!!! Thank you!
You are very welcome! I’m happy it helped 🙂
Highly appreciated. 🤘
Super helpful video. Just purchased a car with the bc br’s and i need to raise it a tad.
Best video for raising ride height!
I've never used coilers before but after watching this video I have more of an understanding. In my opinion, maybe 7" would have been more suitable since the weight of the car is substantial. I feel that full 1" increments would make for a more visible lowering and raising effect.
Thanks alot! Really helpful!
And I like your choice of height. In not a fan of stance/slammed cars. I consider you should be able to drive your car without any risks of damaging it, or hurt yourself ( see shocks from roadholes etc)
But to lower it a little bit for the looks its just ok!
Warm regards from Sweden !
Anders Johansson I agree! I was hitting the bumpstops and scraping my front lip far too often before. The ride height now is just right! Glad you liked the video 👍
DriveItRyan do you know what the maximum ride height is in millimeters for the br-series?
Anders Johansson I’m not sure what the exact measurement is offhand.
Very helpful! Thank you
Really helpful nice quick video👍🏾thanks
Matthew Wilson Jr You got it!
This is the right way adjusting height unlike other videos telling you their way which doesn’t work… thank you
i know everyone thanks you but honestly thank you, this helped alot
.25 inch made a huge difference. Definitely looked better before but if you're happier like this thats nice. Thanks for the helpful tutorial.
Dr. Dylan glad to help! Yeah it’s all it really needed to make daily driving more tolerable 😂
Great vid helped me alot to adjust the coilovers my self 👍😀
Great video !! Short and clear!
Thank you!!
Great vid. Straight to the point no bs
Thanks man!
THANK YOU FOR THIS!
Hey man, I have a set of k-tuned coilovers and they seem pretty similar to the ones in the video.
How do you adjust the rear ones?
Simple and easy thanks for the video sir
Great, thanks for posting this.
No problem!
Good video bub. Right to the point. Simple.
Thanks buddy! I've been getting a lot of backlash for this video lately. This comment was refreshing :)
Thanks for this video!
Thanks for this video, doing gods work🙏🏻
Haha idk about all that but I appreciate it! Happy to help 🤙
Sorry for what is probably a dumb question: does this change any of the other characteristics like preload? I'm having a hard time imagining how this affects the coil portion of the coilover.
My car has independent rear bc springs and struts, do I just leave the spring preload where it is and adjust ride height on the strut portion?
Explained well - thx
I just installed mine and I thought I had to take them out again to adjust them thank God!!
haha nope! You're good 👍
Thanks for being the person to teach me
Happy to help 😊
Is it bad to adjust just by the coil. My coils didnt spin just the spring and the top silver piece that spins
Great video. Can you give some advice what if the whole thing is stuck and turning that top ring won’t move it. How do you get it to move without taking apart the whole bottom
.25" at the coilover probably equals almost .5" at the wheel, because the coilover isn't connected at the hub; it's inboard, so the length of the lower control arm multiplies any height added at the coilover. The multiplier is different for each car.
How would I figure out what the ratio is? Or is it simply just trial and error?
@@diddlemeister7210 measure LCA inner bushing to shock mount and inner bushing to hub. Divide shock over total to see the ratio.
thanks man! i’m thinking of getting coilovers but i don’t want to slam the car. maybe 1-2 inches below factory ride height. can coils adjust that high?
Great Vietnam very helpful… Just installed some new PCs today… There's a little baggie that comes with two black washers… Any idea what these are for… There's nothing in the manuals that I can find… Thanks
Wow thanks man this really helped, its way easier than i thought
Ol' NoName happy to help!
@@DriveItRyan You still need to align it, right?
@@vlenhoff it’s not absolutely necessary for this small of a change in ride height. You probably should, yes, but I personally did not after this adjustment.
I did not know this I took the whole coil over off 🙁 this definitely helped bro thank you
GOD bless you bro I love how you made this vid!!! Perfect ! Thank you
Happy to help brother!
Thanks bro, really informative
Happy to help man!
How about your roll center? Is the moment arm too far from lowering it low?
Great video. Thanks bro. I’ve got BCBR’s too.
Thanks buddy!
is this the same for all bc br series coils? I just got mine and the rear is perfect but the front needs like .25 inch lower
So helpful
Thanks bro! This is useful!
Happy it helped!
Very simple, thanks bro
Happy to help!
Thank you got the Megan racing coilovers on m45s and it is way to low bottoms out with the slightest angle scrapping my stainless steel muffler setup. Your vid has shed some lite on the adjustments
i want to raise my ride height to the tallest. im scared if i go to high and pop out the coilover from its holder?
How do you adjust the rear ride height with these bcs? There seems to be so much pressure that when I try to turn it, it also moves the threaded column too.
Hi was it 6 half inches at the rear coilovers to?
Thanks for posting bro and looks way better and actually livable lol
Anytime man! Yeah it's nice being able to actually take it places now 😂
How high can you raise it? on the BC web site www.bcec.com.tw they say that the shock must be in the lower portion by at least 80mm.
Thats great information except that I didn't see where they tell you the total length of the shock.
Curious as to what the ground to top of wheel well height changes to. Looks like 1/4" translated to 1 or more over all lift.
Correct .. the measurement on the coil is multiplied in actual lift
Would you say you have a 2" gap from tire to wheel well? Thanks
Can it be any kind of spanned wrench? No certain size ?
Thank I was struggling to figure out how to adjust those things
Str8 to the point and very easy thanks
Happy to help!
If i want to lift my car back up about a inch all the way around do i have yo do preload setting again
Thanks man!
Happy to help!
Good vid. Thanks 4 da tutorial
Happy to help 👍
ty this helped me out!!!
Happy to help!
Nice looking good I like it i want to get mine high to see how it would look
Great vid thanks man.
Happy to help!
Have them on my Lotus Elise. It sits lower at the front than my first Elise but now it hits the driveway even with the steel chequerplate I have installed - hopefully I can adjust the ride height.
You should be able to. Lmk how it works out! P.S. I love the Lotus Elise. It’s next on my list of cars to own 😎
@@DriveItRyan Yes I fixed it, two turns clockwise lifted it up half a centimetre. Thats all it needed.
Excellent video, 1 question what the tallest it can go, I want to raise my car about 2 to 3 inches, can't drive anywhere keeps scraping the ground, or I need loose weight, lol😂, can I raise that high ??
does it matter if u can't get the bottom coller loose but need to higher your car as its rubbing there's like 2 centermeter gap between the strut and bottom coller ?
Like the detailed explanation. I have one question. I measured both sides in the front the same measurements. But one side is 1/2 inch to high. Any suggestions? Just wanted too point out that my tires are new and have the same pressure.
could be unequal weight on each side, my rear suspension had different heights even though the coilovers were set to the same height. it happens, and if absolutely everything seems the way it should be, you’ll just have to chalk it up to more weight being on one side of the car than the other and you’ll have to adjust as needed
I finally figured it out and its like you said it happens some are the same and some are not. Thank you.
Thanks mucho! Very clear and straight to the point. I was ready to drop $400 to a shop because I didn't want to attempt it myself. Hopefully it'll go as easy as it looks. Is there a torque spec on re-seating the lower perch nut (hope that's what it's called), or just get it snug with the wrench?
Here i thought I was going to have to uninstall BR's to adjust the height. Thank you so much.
FireKnight43 nope! Saved a bunch of time 🙂
