Just a quick note for anybody complaining that this gentleman isn't doing "real" or "proper" Taekwon-do: The "teacup" technique he refers to, and the stance that he performs it in, are exactly as described in General Choi Hong Hi's 1965 book "Taekwon-do The Art of Self-Defence". The ITF was established in 1966 and made certain changes to the kata/hyung/tul as time went on. The Forearm Guarding Block + Bending Ready Stance of ITF Taekwon-Do is a more recent addition to this pattern. This video is correct, just maybe not for your style (or mine for that matter). There are more types of TKD than the one you have learned. Also, while the use of the term "teacup" might seem silly or strange to those of us who don't use the term, it's no more crazy than phrases like "knifehand" or "footsword" when you really give them a bit of thought.
when i was taught this form i learned it the correct way. i was in the USTA at that time. im quite aware that i used the term kata which is incorrect for Korean forms but i switched to Shotokan karate many years ago. the point i was making is people shouldnt be so fast to judge him. tkd has so many forms and very few systems do them the same way. the way he does them in his dojang may be slightly different but he teaches very well. it is disrespectful to criticize unless its meant as constructive expecially considering the masters rank.
Thank you, finally someone mentioned it. By the way, by the USTA, was that the United States TaeKwonDo Alliance? If so, I was in that same organization later on after they changed their name to the International TaeKwonDo Alliance or ITA.
Why do so many people have negative things to say about people who do things different to the way they've been taught. Yes it's different to the way I perform Tul, however the Sabum is demonstrating clearly and in an articulate way.
+Malc697 I will answer that question for you after two years. The reason there are negative comments is because ITF TKD has evolved and Gen Choi had made so many changes to make the forms more efficient and less stress for the body. In order for everyone to make the forms exactly the same he created a very detailed encyclopedia that everyone should follow. If you step away from that encyclopedia is fine is your choice but you cannot call the forms ITF anymore if you start doing it and teaching them your own way. Someone already created the forms and that someone who is Choi left us with a book on how to to them correctly. That is why all his videos get negative forms because in all of them he use the words ITF and that make himself look bad when people like us that follow ITF legacy do it the right way and we have the right to tell him they are wrong. Of course with respect and without insults.
Mr. Chad, this is an excellent video. Your slow step by step presentation of the traditional Won-Hyo Young form was quite helpful. Granted every dojang has their little "extras" they may add or take away from. Your presentation is accurate and carries the traditional movements required for this form. Unfortunately its sad to read that some students do not get taught this form in their schools. I have noticed that a lot of the newer schools are removing the basic fundamentals such as these forms. However you keep your students in with the traditional ways. Good form sir!
He might not be perfect like Bruce lee , the fact he can take you step by step to have a idea , compare to rushing through the form is refreshing . Thank you.
73clairewillis: We do not practice sine wave, so you are correct. This video was taken strictly for my personal students as a quick instructional. It was done shortly after I injured my ankle and doing this side kick was very painful, so I completely agree with your comment on the quality of the side kick.
im not tkd anymore but i learned this kata many years ago and i rather like the way he explained the kata. keep in mind he is explaining the kata for children and people who just learned or are learning the form. im sure if he does it at full speed he performs much better than during teaching demonstration
+gene cooner That is the problem you didn't learn the right way because first of all that is not a kata (japanese) is Tul (korean). I also teach children and this is a complete wrong way. I won't mind if people decide to do the forms different than Gen Choi but don't call them ITF forms because the way they are teaching them is NOT ITF is more like a karate taekwondo.
He is demonstrating in an articulate way, but the techniques are wrong. Bending ready stance is one technique. this is totally missing. Tea Cup is NOT a taekwon-Do technique.
The "teacup" technique he refers to, and the stance that he performs it in, are exactly as described in General Choi Hong Hi's 1965 book "Taekwon-do The Art of Self-Defence". that is a really bad scooping block you are supposed to bend your back leg I am a black stripe going for black belt and this is really disappointing to see from a 4th degree
Altairino327, This is the form as it was passed on to me from my instructor. I understand that there are many form interpretations in existence. I do agree that my technique in this is bad. I had an ankle injury at the time of this video, but choose to shoot it anyway so that my students could have a reference, rough as this may be, of the basic steps. One might call working through an injury perseverance. We have since reshot it. Did you perhaps mean to say "dilettante?"
You aren't supposed to let your hands touch.. They are supposed to hover closely, but not touch. I guess ITF Taekwondo is different than UTA Taekwondo.
tea cup is proper as per The General. It's chambering. Many instructors do things their own way. You know, it's my school, I'll do it my way. So, not BS.
My two cents...I am pretty sure this is WTF. There are so many different styles of TDK. Each is going to be a little different. The basic pattern is the same. And the phrase tea cup could be a specific term used in his Do Jon. Sometimes kids understand better when using a term like tea cup. I get it, your holding a tea cup. Our Master calls it a double knife hand block; using the example of holding a chalice in your back hand to emphasize position of your palm.
That first sidekick was so lame . It didn't even look like one. What he got wrong: 1.he done it too low 2.his foot wasn't horizontal 3.he done it too slow 4.he faced backwards while doing it 5.he didn't pivot but actually piveted the WRONG WAY
Different styles do things differently, a lot of ignorance in the comments section. Maybe gain some knowledge and education about Martial Arts before ignorantly bashing a 4th Degree Black Belt and Instructor.
check the position of your feet, is getting out of the diagram. you need technical content, I know this is not taekwondo ITF but is acceptable. TAEKWON !
But you can dowel the name of the form everybody puts a little bit of themselves in the forms make a little or minor changes that don't affect it and tea cup probably for his kids to know what he's talking about
+angel melo Sorry Angel but I disagree, if you going to teach a form you teach it the right way from the beginning. Is like teaching a kid to drive a car and tell them "don't worry about the break for now, just hit the gas all the time"

u are supposed to cross your hands on the twin forearm block
His moa junbi sogi is totally wrong...
Not even talking about the whole form :D
if your gonna say a movement please say correctly

CTF does the same thing with the hovering. It bugged me to shit to see this guy give that chinese/kung fu like salute, or whatever.
Ikr? This is TKD, not Karate..
its not a chop its a high inward knife hand strike
ESTO ES UNA OFENSA AL GENERAL CHOI Y SU LEGADO, NO TIENEN LA TECNICA BASICA, NO HAY MOVIMIENTO ONDULANTE.
Not itf of course
you should have learnt how to cross your hands from white belt
this is a different TKD, that kick???
Tea cup?? Been doing TKD years, first time I've heard of this! BS!
tea cup is proper as per The General. It's chambering. Many instructors do things their own way. You know, it's my school, I'll do it my way. So, not BS.
Jorge,
I'm not sure I understand what you're saying. What technical content are you suggesting that is needed?
This isnt a won hyo tul!!!!!! Could be whatever u want but not a won hyo
this is NOT TAEKWONDO ITF...

What the hell kind of sidekick was that? You almost got your leg to hip height but you forgot to do anything with your foot. Teacup....
and cross your hands that is really disappointing
Please join an an oficial de ITF academy if you want to improve your thecniques, instead of imitaiting and faking people with your movings
That first sidekick was so lame . It didn't even look like one.

X que usan dobok negro ?

вотц э хелл?
That's completely wrong the l stance is one move and what the heck is tea cup and u call yourself a black belt u can't even do one yo properly
Is like teaching a kid to drive a car and tell them "don't worry about the break for now, just hit the gas all the time"
Emmanuel Reyes I agree

OMG
