The world news over the past few years has been filled with coverage of the Syrian civil war. Caught in the crossfire of Syrian dictator Bashar Al-Assad and various rebel and terror groups, millions of Syrians have fled by sea hoping to reach Greece or other places to take refuge.
The toll of the brutal civil war and dangerous journey across the Mediterranean on the mental health of Syrian children is so extreme that it has been coined “Human Devastation Syndrome.” Israeli Arab doctor Essam Daod was so moved by their plight that he went to the Greek island of Lesvos in order to help treat their mental health as a form of first aid. He is using an innovative technique in order to help stop post-traumatic stress disorder in kids: helping them process trauma by creating a new internal narrative of what happened to them. He’s also recruited lots of other volunteers and is training child therapists for his group Humanity Crew, which has provided 26,000 hours of mental health support to over 10,000 refugees through 194 delegations of qualified, trained volunteers and therapists. Could this technique be used to prevent PTSD in children in other scenarios?

whatever your opinions about refugees may be. Can we at least agree that children shouldn't have to become severely traumatised for the rest of their life because of it?
What’s disheartening is the fact that people in this comment section are seeing these individuals not as people, children, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, etc. No matter what you believe politically, it’s still important to have a heart about it and recognize that the government and actual country aspect of the country you hate most is 110% separate from the innocent individuals fleeing war and horrible situations, in a life or death situation. It feels so wrong to hate people for the fact that they were born into a country other than the U.S. I’m not here to attack anyone or change anyone’s mind, I’m just here to spread my own opinion, and my opinion is that this world should see these people as people and not “savages” as many are children. The U.S undeniably has its own issues such as poverty in many places within our borders, but it doesn’t mean that we have to blind ourselves to the fact that innocent people are innocent people and are all equally deserving of love, care and opportunities, despite their country of origin. If you care enough about my comment to reply with something hateful, don’t bother. But, if you want to state your own opinion, I’m not here to stop you from it. I would just respect it more if you present it in a respectful or kind manner.

It's really interesting to hear him talk about a traumatic experience like a physical injury that can be a triaged and treated (if gotten to in time) to minimize the damage done. It's both simple and novel. Love it!

It's not long term when I was a child my mother killed herself by lighting our house on fire my twin sisters and their friend climbed down our garage to get to safety my oldest sister ran down the stairs that were on fire and I jumped out of my two story window, context we were all on second floor. But I thought I was a BA at 10 years old and while it hasn't been all bad I've grown up being extremely self reliant especially in times I probably shouldn't have been. While I agree 100% with the idea dont let them ever forget they aren't alone and people can help if they let them...

The trauma doesn't stop. It happened/happens every day. You can say that they are survivors vs victims and that helps, but it doesn't stop the trauma. It's still there.
Only immigrants that promise to come legally, conform to their new country, and learn the new language should be allowed in.

Not all refugees tho! I'll admit some refugees coming to places that offer a better place for them to live take that as an advantage and reek havoc on the country, but a majority of them have fled their country from an outbreak of war and just want a better future for themselves and their kids! And he isn't a child molester, and I don't worship child molesters in the first place, he's helping traumatic children fleeing from their home! So please don't use your freedom speech to hurt other parties, I'm sure Sweden already had rapists, killings in their country in the first place, it's terrible, but it's the way the world is right now unfortunately. Give them food and water. Then turn their boat around and send them back.
They are refugees, the whole point is for them to come back. Also, there is a reason why they came back, they didn't just come back to have a better life. They came because their homes are being destroyed during the civil war. Imagine if our country was in the civil war again, and the other half of your part of the U.S.A was bombing your side. If they were bombing your homes. Even the hospitals were destroyed while the people were still inside it. It sends a message, so people leave for their safety. Imagine if you left during a hypothetical civil war, and a naive asshole told you to leave safety and go back to the dangerous country of origin.

Great work, really sick of my fellow countrymen and women in the US who are so spoiled that they don't realize that refugees aren't coming to take their livelihood they are coming so they can provide enough for themselves and their family to survive. Add to that the hoarding of economic funds from the 1% that has removed the middle class and you have poor Americans who sympathize with refugees but are too poor to do anything about it and you have wealthy upper class Americans who are so spoiled and privileged that all they care about is how they can continue to hoard money and pay their employees less. Anyways my only point is that to the outside America looks like a nation of selfish spoiled people who have no compassion for the plight of other nations people (a perfect example is President Dump, I mean Chump). It's not that we don't care it's just that most of us who care and are intelligent enough to live in an unselfish way don't have the money or power/influence to make much of a change. Through lobbying The wealthy companies an individual's have hi jacked the US and now we aren't even able to do anything about monopolies etc. I hate to think i live in a country with people that are so spoiled and selfish that they care about nothing but themselves. Only a nation such as this would have elected the con man Trump to lead us into further problems. I know the Syrian refuges have a much different story an reason for asylum them mexican immigrants. But whether it's lack of money, jobs, welfare or freedom everyone should have a chance to provide for themselves and their family. I truly believe we need to think about how to lessen the future population. There's no shame in being a great Aunt or Uncle instead of mom or dad. With as many problems as we have and with the ones on the rise like climate change we need to change the thinking about having a family being the ultimate goal. We need to learn to provide for the billions of people that are already here. Letting our global population continue to climb is only causing stress an leading up to an epic disaster.
