  • Macao is more than just casinos! Listen to simple casual conversation as Eileen visits Macao and describes what she sees, feels and does along the way. Good video for lower intermediates to practice Chinese listening.

Since I was born into a Chinese-Canadian household that spoke primarily Cantonese and English, I did not venture nor practice much mandarin, much less understand it. The disparity in style and tone between Cantonese and Mandarin, two closely-related languages, contributed to the daunting and insurmontable journey to learning the four-tone language. However, this video helped turn the tide around and gave me a boost of confidence. Now I am able to believe that, with the help of you and your videos, I will be able to learn a multitude of things and, eventually, be able to speak Mandarin fluently (which is my goal). I hope you continue to produce more superb videos such as this!

I went yesterday and the temeperature was 90F (32C); but by the water, the temperature drops to 65F (19C) because the water is so cold. I swam for 15 minutes. (water temperature was only 10C or 50F

Also, yes, you are right: Macau and the Wanchai but mainly Tunglowan area of Hong Hong are the most densely populated areas in the world. I first went to Macau in 1970, a very different place then. There were only three casinos, no decorations, everyone smoking, real gamblers, incredible smoke-filled atmosphere and gamblers as if in a 1930’s Chinese movie. Very interesting architecture in Macau. It was so nice seeing the familiar old Portuguese building styles and streets and sidewalks pavements that are familiar to me in Brazil. In all main cities in Brazil you will find similar scenery. It´s curios that you needed to talk in English to the boy at the beach. Was he unable to talk to you in Mandarin? And he is pretty good with English!

The official languages in Macau are Cantonese and Portuguese. But nowadays, very few people can speak Portuguese. On the other hand, Mandarin is getting very popular and widespread in Macau because of the massive number of tourists coming from the mainland.
I was also a little surprised that the boy couldn't speak Mandarin. I guess he just wasn't used to speaking Mandarin.
