During her Portsmouth concert on Sept 22, a track mistakenly played twice at the start of one of her original songs, which had her voice singing the song. She immediately stopped the band and fixed it. She said something to the effect of "I don't lip sync" (not that exactly, but essentially that). I'm glad that she proudly states that and stays true to real musicianship in her live performances. I believe she'll always perform that way. She's the best.
That brief exchange was eye opening. We all got a look at why Angelina was called “the boss” in many of her earlier recordings. The consummate professional.
I've seen her do that in an indoor concert when she was younger and it was also amazing. So I knew this performance would make you happy. They're both good but you should find the other and see which one you prefer. Sending happiness from NC.
Most Angels seem to like Angelina’s other version of Feelin Good a little better. That’s the one with the big band with horns and strings. I’ve always liked this one more because we can hear her voice more clearly. She was the same age for both. Also, we see how involved the audience is here. It’s Angelina in front of her home crowd-and they’ve known for years already that she is absolutely amazing-a national treasure. She comes in behind the beat, she has already perfected that vocal fry morphing into a clear note, she gives us range and shocking power, and her humility shows all through this performance. I’m addicted to everything Angelina sings, but if I was forced to choose-I’d pick younger Angelina as my favorite incarnation. She might not yet be the best singer in the world, but she was easily the best child singer ever.
This was recorded in June 2016. The big band version was recorded 6 months later in January just before her 11th birthday. This is not as polished, but I consider it one of her breakout performances and is probably my "grandpa" favorite.
Love your comment! To me, the two performances are like bookends… equally spectacular. They both have their offsetting merits. You are absolutely right about the audience engagement to the earlier, outdoor performance. The sustained lead-in into the final belt is incomparable here whereas with the indoor performance, the belt itself seems more energetic. The brass band is amazing, but the talented musicians in the outdoor venue do their best considering their limited instrumentation playing outdoors.

Angelina has performed this song many times now, and it's almost her signature song. I love every one of those performances, and they're all subtle and different. She has an arrangement she likes, but she adds things on the fly, creatively. Subtle is a great word for the things she does. I believe it was Elizabeth Zharov, a reactor, vocal coach and opera singer once said that perfect pitch isnt perfect singing. To more effectively convey emotion sometimes you have to be a little flat or a little sharp.

Thanks for another great Monday Boudy....you are always so intuitive and insightful when it comes to music....and this young music genius... It has been said that Angelina's imperfections are perfect and there is not much better than Angelina Live!! She has 100's of videos simply recorded at home with just a mic and backing track or with just a guitar and a mic that simply proves this young lady needs no bells and whistles, production, mixing etc...to sound like she does...she has dozens and dozens of TikToks or IG's just singing with a cellphone that are spectacular. One of these days you should compile several of her short TikToks into a reaction (has been done by others) to get the full effect of the spectacular Raw vocals. Thank YOU! Angelina has performed this song several times over the years, but this was her first live one that I'm aware of. Even the practice and walking around takes are fantastic. Looking forward to the warm blanket interview, they do a great job, and we always learn new things about what why and how AJ does what she does.
Just in case you're not familiar with earlier recordings, there are at least two live performances that were recorded slightly earlier. The first shows a 9-year-old jazz artist on a famous stage: Angelina Jordan concert, December 21, 2015, at Victoria Scene, Oslo - Norway ruclips.net/video/D9tI-FCslRw/видео.html A historic venue with plenty of culture within its walls, Victoria has been the permanent home of the Norwegian national jazz scene since 2008. It is an intimate concert stage with very good sound and lighting conditions, but only seats 270 spectators, so you can describe it as a kind of jazz club. The second one was released on April 24, 2016 (= 9 weeks before Alsang pa grensen on June 30) - I can't remember the occasion, but it looks like more than 270 people. Very interesting what you say about timing.... I think you see in some of her recent concerts a little bit of imperfection with the musicians trying to follow her - but that's OK ! I think she free-wheels most of her performances and musicians have to follow as best they can... those who have most experience playing with her do fine, with others you can sometimes see a few issues.... but her voice carries all. I love what you say about perfection.. with Angelina any imperfections just add positively ! We see that over and over... Even the bigger ones like last year when she had to say to her band/friends: "I'm not ready yet guys" :)

I don't know if it's true, but with her love of spontaneity in her music & with her live performances being her best, Imo, I wouldn't doubt that Uncle Mike included it when she signed with RR. Excellent point on singing live my friend. It's the unique changes in a delivery that prompt unique composition that takes the song to a new level. Also, the emotion that comes out is even more real, connecting so much more with the listener.

Angelina has two excellent renditions of this. The outdoor version is a bit slower. The television performance (my fav), is a bit faster, and the band much more aggressive. She is perfectly imperfect. :)

Nina Simone's rendition of this song is considered by most to be 'The Gold Standard' for this song, but Angelina, at 10 years of age, has expertly arranged and performed this song on what I consider 'The Platinum Level' for the song. I don't believe it can be improved on, and hasn't been by all the great singers who sang it before Angelina.
I'm a musician myself and I too respect musicians more who perform live without the need of auto-tune or lip-syncing. I totally agree that it's fine to make mistakes. If someone just used tracks in a concert, why would I visit a concert then? I could just listen to the same thing on spotify and the artist might as well not even appear on stage, it's the same thing. I'm so glad Angelina is one of the artists who performs live at her concerts.

I've said it before and I'll probably say it again, when I see her singing with flowers in her hair, and for anyone that doesn't know it. I feel that she is channeling Euterpe: The Muse of Music in Greek mythology - typically represented with a crown of flowers in her hair and called "Giver of delight" by ancient poets. Also known as "The one with a pleasant genius". I think that description is especially fitting, and the ancient poets could easily be describing Angelina. As she gets older, she herself could become the guiding genius for others to emulate.

When I first digested these two FEELING GOOD videos, I imagine everyone clicks on the slick TV-studio version and this Allsang Pa Grensen show is ?? 6-8 months earlier. AJ looks distracted by the daylight audience - all those signs, faces, waving hands and arms. It can be a VERY distracting environment. But by the end, that live, day-bright audience offers one thing that the slick TV studio can't: the enthusiasm of a much much larger crowd... and now, the audience is boosting her, higher and higher. That's why I think this climactic passiage is even more powerful than the slick TV version.

Thank YOU! Angelina has performed this song several times over the years, but this was her first live one that I'm aware of. Even the practice and walking around takes are fantastic.
Looking forward to the warm blanket interview, they do a great job, and we always learn new things about what why and how AJ does what she does.
Just in case you're not familiar with earlier recordings, there are at least two live performances that were recorded slightly earlier.

A historic venue with plenty of culture within its walls, Victoria has been the permanent home of the Norwegian national jazz scene since 2008. It is an intimate concert stage with very good sound and lighting conditions, but only seats 270 spectators, so you can describe it as a kind of jazz club.

Very interesting what you say about timing.... I think you see in some of her recent concerts a little bit of imperfection with the musicians trying to follow her - but that's OK ! I think she free-wheels most of her performances and musicians have to follow as best they can... those who have most experience playing with her do fine, with others you can sometimes see a few issues.... but her voice carries all. I love what you say about perfection.. with Angelina any imperfections just add positively ! We see that over and over... Even the bigger ones like last year when she had to say to her band/friends: "I'm not ready yet guys" :)
Ivan Mendez, the guitarist who worked with Angelina when she first moved to LA said as much. A paraphrase of his statement about Angelina's approach to the recordings was "This one sounds interesting. Follow me and try to keep up."

Boudy, her fans call those minor mistakes her "Perfect Imperfections." As far as Autotune goes, I've read in the comments that she has in her contract no Autotune allowed. I don't know if it's true, but with her love of spontaneity in her music & with her live performances being her best, Imo, I wouldn't doubt that Uncle Mike included it when she signed with RR. Excellent point on singing live my friend. It's the unique changes in a delivery that prompt unique composition that takes the song to a new level. Also, the emotion that comes out is even more real, connecting so much more with the listener.

this song on what I consider 'The Platinum Level' for the song. I don't believe it can be
improved on, and hasn't been by all the great singers who sang it before Angelina.
I'm a musician myself and I too respect musicians more who perform live without the need of auto-tune or lip-syncing. I totally agree that it's fine to make mistakes. If someone just used tracks in a concert, why would I visit a concert then? I could just listen to the same thing on spotify and the artist might as well not even appear on stage, it's the same thing. I'm so glad Angelina is one of the artists who performs live at her concerts.

I've said it before and I'll probably say it again, when I see her singing with flowers in her hair, and for anyone that doesn't know it. I feel that she is channeling Euterpe: The Muse of Music in Greek mythology - typically represented with a crown of flowers in her hair and called "Giver of delight" by ancient poets. Also known as "The one with a pleasant genius". I think that description is especially fitting, and the ancient poets could easily be describing Angelina. As she gets older, she herself could become the guiding genius for others to emulate.

When I first digested these two FEELING GOOD videos, I imagine everyone clicks on the slick TV-studio version and this Allsang Pa Grensen show is ?? 6-8 months earlier. AJ looks distracted by the daylight audience - all those signs, faces, waving hands and arms. It can be a VERY distracting environment. But by the end, that live, day-bright audience offers one thing that the slick TV studio can't: the enthusiasm of a much much larger crowd... and now, the audience is boosting her, higher and higher. That's why I think this climactic passiage is even more powerful than the slick TV version.
