    Aegon feels so much like Anakin Skywalker.
    As a child not meant for greatness, than getting a prophecy linked to himself, not properly trained, makes horrible mistakes, kept on a short leash and can´t overcome his arrogance which causes him to be mutilated for life.

    Criston is being genuine - don't let your hatred for the character overlookn the effort writers are putting into his story. He's seen war before but never war with dragons. Being at Rook's Rest must have been terrifying: the smell of burning flesh, a field covered in black ash and bones. Dude probably has PTSD and like many men in Westeros, he doesn't think women are able to cope with that kind of brutality or make the decisions needed to win a brutal war of dragons.

    No, the thing with Rhaena is that she already tried to claim a dragon and she was rejected. If she tries again, she'll likely get burnt. If you try to claim a dragon and it rejects you, that's it. There is no second chance with that dragon

    You're doing a disservice to Criston Cole: he has genuine PTSD after Rook's Rest. He's seen battle before, but not dragon war, and it shook him for real. Just because you have many perfectly sound reasons to hate the guy doesn't mean his feelings aren't real, indeed his feelings, justified or not, have been the driving force in all his actions so far. Alicent showed zero empathy or understanding for him, just as she does with all the men in her life, including her own sons.
    Rhaenys' decision to fight Vhagar wasn't a "kamikaze mission": Meleys was big enough to have a genuine chance to take down Vhagar. It was a calculated gamble, based on two factors:
    1. It would hurt Rhaenyra's cause if her dragon was seen to flee and leave her allies undefended,
    2. If Meleys could take out Vhagar, then that would take out the single greatest weapon the Greens have, and allow their dragons to operate freely in support of the Blacks' troops.
    Pride at not wanting to run from a fight probably also played a part, but not, I think, a decisive one in Rhaenys' case.
    Unfortunately, Vhagar's "uppwards surprise chomp" tactic worked again. You can see Rhaenys looking _upwards_ for Vhagar immediately before it happens, because conventional wisdom is that dragons prefer to attack from above. This is why Vhagar's tactic catches other dragons out.

      1. is a ridiculous reason... seriously... if you saw on the news right now... a troop of our soldiers walked into an ambush, did serious damage and got the hell out of there, you would be very happy.... instead of ... a troop of our soldiers walked into an ambush and they died.... so they failed.... that is just people trying to rationalize something too stupid to rationalize.

    • @MrHws5mp

      @@randallwilliamson3838 You think it's ridiculous by 21st century western European standards, however those didn't apply over much of the world throughout most of history. "Death before dishonour" was a very real principle for many warfighters until well after the middle ages, which were roughly equivalent to GoT in terms of societal values. We also place a value on our own lives and those of others that is seriously exaggerated by historical standards. A statement like, "nothing is worth dying for" gets nodding agreement these days, but it'd get you disgusted looks of disapproval 200 years ago.

      @@MrHws5mp yet we will not see one single house join Rhaenyra because of Rhaenys sacrifice and the one house she had supporting her she had to bribe with Hand of the King to keep because of the death of Rhaenys. It is ok to say the show made it stupid, because it did.

    • @MrHws5mp
      @MrHws5mp Месяц назад

      @@randallwilliamson3838 She has more than one house supporting her, and the point is that none of them _left_ her cause because Rhaenys _didn't_ fight for Rook's Rest. Rhaenys had no way of knowing at the time that she was going to lose: we can say with hindsight that it was a sacrifice not worth making, but she didn't have the luxury of that in the 30 seconds she had to make her decision. Don't forget, there's only been one (accidental, with no witnesses) dragon vs dragon fight in living memory so nobody, neither Rhaenys nor Aemond, had the personal experience to judge how it would go.

    Trixie, regarding Rhaenys, I think it is even more simple. She did not "sacrifice" herself, as she was a CONFIDENT WOMAN who firmly believed in her skills as a warrior! She saw an opportunity to end the war by taking out both Aemond and Aegon. She also had her granddaughter to worry about, who could one day face Aemond in battle. When you describe Rhaenys as "sacrificing" herself (as if she believed death was certain), you are turning her into a victim, rather than a brave person who took a risk, fought with every ounce of experience and skill she had, but lost.

    18:37 Alicent just seething in frustration and regret, breathing heavily but not a word spoken - a brilliantly executed scene! If she had hoped to control Aegon (or even Aegon's future) by leading the council as regent, all of that has just slipped away. And there's hardly a thing she can do about it. As a mother however, as you rightly say Blue, she has failed entirely - though perhaps for entirely understandable reasons. If she was deceived in the past, she is being deceived even more so than ever.

    Alicent's been so dumb recently, the whole reason for the war is the argument that Viserys changed his mind (she thought) because he knew the realm wouldn't accept a queen. So your fighting a war for this reason and she actually poses the at the Council make her Queen regent..... It literally destroys her whole case for her side. Also, she takes no responsibility for raising Aemond terribly and in no way stopping one of her sons from bullying the other and she is shocked now that Aemond has power that he's a menace smh.

    • @andilezulu292
      @andilezulu292 Месяц назад +1

      Alicent didn't start the war or the usurpation of Rhaenyra. - Otto and the council had been planning it for YEARS. Whether or not she agreed, they would have continued the green coup anyways. The real reason for this war is that Aegon's claim stands in direct challenge to Rhaenyra. It's the word of the sovereign king vs thousands of years of succession tradition. The Dance was inevitable as soon as Viserys had a first-born son. If it wasn't gonna be Rhaenyra vs Aegon, it would have been Aegon's kids vs Rhaenyra's kids OR even Jace vs his half brothers through Daemon. Ya'll just like blaming Alicent for anything and everything smh

      @@andilezulu292 I'm well aware of Otto and his role and I agree he had been planning to do this for years, but as much as on paper Otto should have more power than Alicent in reality at the time, I'm not sure that it would play out that way, Otto might have tried but without Alicents support and convincing Aegon to actually believe his father wanted him to rule, I think Otto tries fails and looses his head and that's the end of it. There is no way of saying for sure, but to say Alicent didn't play a huge role is ignorant and on top of that, regardless for her to think that when their whole claim is Aegon is the first male and that is why Rhaenyra has no claim, to then make her regent would be an absolute farce and shows how oblivious she is.

    • @andilezulu292
      @andilezulu292 Месяц назад

      @@deardeer5215 I disargee - Otto as Hand controlled the Small Council and his voice had more influence with the Maester Orwyle, and the Lords Tyland and Jasper (who had already taken gold out of kings landing and begun sending terms to great houses across the realm). With or without Alicent, Rhaenyra was going to get usurped or at least have her ascension contested. The misinterpretation of Vizzy T's dream was simply a justification, not a cause.
      The cause of this war is competing claims that are propelled by a deep family feud. In fact, if Viserys married any noble lady and had a first born son (whether Baratheon, Lannister or Tully) there would have been a succession crisis.
      And no Alicent is not oblivious, she's experienced the horror of patriarchy her entire life - she lost her best friend and childhood to it, was maritally raped for years because of it. The small council scene isn't her discovering sexism for the first time - it's her reeling at feeling betrayed, losing power and fearing what Aemond has become. That scene is meant to be a parallel to what Rhaenyra is going through: both are capable leaders (Alicent actually has experience ruling as regent) and both want to mitigate the destruction this war will cause BUT men in Westeros are not conditioned to respect the authority of women when it comes to war.

    • @deardeer5215
      @deardeer5215 Месяц назад

      @@andilezulu292 for one this is something that we'll never have the answer to because we can't ever see the alternative reality. Two to act like it makes sense for Alicent to be regent and that it doesn't go completely counter to the entire green claim to the throne is just straight up blindness

    • @andilezulu292
      @andilezulu292 Месяц назад

      @@deardeer5215 We don't need an alternative reality, the text itself (GOT, HOTD, F&B and ASOIAF) show clearly that male primogeniture is the guiding rule of succession. Sons before daughters, uncles before nieces and brothers before sisters - Catelyn, Olenna, Margery etc and many other noble woman would feel cheated if there first born son was skipped over for a daughter and they would likely do something to push their son's claim. And HOTD presents this as a real political dilemma with no easy answers.
      Again, Alicent isn't blind or oblivious as to how succession works, she's literally the queen. What has her shook is that all of her service, her loyalty to the crown, her submission to duty and her experience is undermined by the sexism of Westeros. She's thinking to herself "what was the point of it all?" and Rhaenyra is a parallel, she's realising the true weight and burden of ruling, particularly as a woman breaking thousands of years of tradition

    Aemond had to do nothing but wait after taking out Aegon lol Alicent had no chance or case for the throne at all, and her realizing that in real time is hilarious. They were never gonna let a woman on that throne again the only reason she was there the first time was because her husband was the king. Aemond had every reason to be the next king logically, he is one of the last king sons, an excellent warrior/dragon rider plus has shown to be a good tactician, and has won a battle in this war already. But we really know why he shouldn't be sitting on that throne lol he's a damn pysocpath and part of that is kinda her faullt too😅

At the start of this series, if someone had been walking away from Daemon and Caraxes the way the Brackens did they would have been toasted with a side of turnips and some gravy (You can't give up on the gravy! - Hot Pie). Despite what happens here, he is really starting to mellow out and I think that's what this witch wants.
