    So the previous riders of Meleys and Vhagar were Daemon and Viserys Parents. They would fly around with them together all the time. It makes this even more heartbreaking knowing the two dragons had a peaceful history together before this.

      And more recently too when Laena has Vhagar. They would have roosted together at Driftmark. One of the big tragedies is that the dragons wouldn't fight each other if not for the riders.

    Aegon was lazy to learn valeryian but stubborn enough to teach Sunfyre English. 😅 they have the best bond from all the riders. A king who would ride to battle? He’s courageous I’ll give him that. Sunfyre is such a good boy, he went for the neck, chest got ripped but he kept flying and then also turned to land on said chest to try and spare his rider

    A couple likely reasons why Rhaenys went to face Vhagar:
    1. She was charged with defending the castle and taking out Criston, it would look bad to Rhaenyra's allies if her dragons flee the second Vhagar shows up. Though, strategically, I do think preserving Meleys would have been better in the long run.
    2. She was the more experienced rider with a faster dragon, she stood a chance of taking out Vhagar and effectively ending the war. Even if she died in the process, it would be worth it.
    3. She possibly felt guilty for not burning the greens when she had the chance.
    In the end, she is a Targaryen with that fighting spirit and got her dragon rider's death.

      Also I’d like to end after her fight sceen and she turned away from the forest going towards the water she was flying towards the direction she came from = back to Dragonstone so she likely was leaving at the end.

    • @AdzPower
      @AdzPower 5 месяцев назад +4

      I also think at the point she strapped herself in she knew she wouldn't make it out alive, Meleys was possibly too injured to fly back to Dragonstone so she decided to go out doing as much damage to Aemond as she could.

    I love that Alicent/Aegon scene so much. She'll stand in front of a dragon for him, but she can't bring herself to comfort him when he cries. She'll betray her best friend for him, but she resents him so much because of it that when he asks her advice all she can do is tear into him. She loves him deeply, but she can hardly stand the sight of him because of the horrible person he's become. More so than any of her other children, he's the one whose arrival meant that her life was over: the King's firstborn son, the one the realm would see as the rightful heir in Rhaenyra's stead. All the abuse and expectations that Otto heaped on her, she in turn heaped on Aegon--but where she dutifully executed her father's will, Aegon collapsed under the pressure, and she despises him for it. It's almost like child brides make terrible mothers!

      @ghostofdurruti 4 месяца назад +2

      @@Unlimited78 I disagree that most highborn women were in her situation. Sure, unwanted marriages at a young age were pretty common in Westeros, but having to marry *specifically* her best friend's dad and to give birth to children that will be a threat to her succession and her life because she is the daughter of the king is an unusual level of horrible.
      I also think that if you can excuse Aegon and Aemond's monstrous actions because of their terrible upbringing but can't excuse Alicent's less awful (though still bad) actions because of hers, there seems to be something of a double standard at play.
      Cersei's situation was similar but different in some key ways--notably that her children were not actually fathered by the husband she was forced to marry.

  • @Iamsome61
    @Iamsome61 5 месяцев назад +18

    I was waiting for your reaction above all others, and you did not disappoint. Your insight is always spot on. My heart hurts for Sunfyre who was so devoted to her rider and Aegon never wanted to be king but was trying in his own immature way. He never had guidance and Alicent failed him. Yes, Aegon bullied Aemond, but his faith in Aemond never wavered. “Thank the gods” and in the next minute “no!” as his ‘faithful hound’ attacked him.
    Rhaenys and Maylece loss was heartbreaking. When she saw Aemond betray Aegon, I believe that solidified her determination to bring Vhegar and Aemond down. They went down with honor. 💔

    Anyone can learn Valyrian. I'm pretty sure the Grand Maester would understand, and wouldn't be surprised if Larys did too.
    The concoction that Alys gave Daemon was Weirwood sap, it's what Bran consumes to enhance his Greenseer powers. He drank it because he had just seen her eat some and then add hot water to it.

    I was touched that you saw the scene between Alicent and Aegon more complexly than most. To me it was a depiction of abuse. Alicent treats Aegon like a disease from before an age where he is even capable of wronging her, this instills a bone deep self-hatred in him which leads to self-destructive actions. Blame him for being unprepared after you didn't prepare him, blame him for not asking for input and make him feel worthless when he does, damned if you do and damned if you don't. Abuse. That scene made me realize I despise Alicent btw.
    Aegon =/= Joffrey, even though they seem similar. Joffrey thought he was god's gift to the world but there is no one Aegon hates more than himself. It makes Sunfyre greeting him so heartwarming, the only living thing that loves him.

    I’ve just rewatched the entire show and now I’m rewatching Sophie’s reaction to it and I have to say: The writing for Aegon this season was gorgeously done! He’s character arc from episode 1 where he’s both excited and super anxious about finally being seen (and hopefully loved) by the realm, to episode 2 when Tom gives us a totally new side of Aegon who despite his many, sometimes irredeemable flaw, is still a human being who loved his little son and is in desperate need of human connection to finally arriving at the broken, humbled Aegon, who after being literally and figuratively burned by his own family flees Kingslanding and consequently his now beloved Throne, now having witnessed first hand that this whole thing is not child’s play and that even kings have to reap the spoils of their actions, and as a STUNNING final writing touch arriving at the conclusion that all he ever wanted was basically TO BE Rhaenyra, to be “The Realms delight” as his sister was once called, chef’s kiss for the conclusion of his season 2 character arc. And I thing it goes without saying that Tom’s acting was in a whole other level this season, the writing was great but he brought SO MUCH more about Aegon to the screen, he made me feel all the feels, he made me laugh, he made me angry and frustrated, he made me cry (multiple times in fact), but most of all he made me understand and be compelled by a character that can be disgusting at times, that’s the beauty of art and acting in particular. I didn’t forget all the horrible things he’s done…but still Tom managed to make many of us feel deeply for him. The acting in the show has been all around great from the very beginning, but personally, while in season one my eyes lit up every time Paddy, Milly and Olivia entered a scene, during season 2 Tom, Emma, Phia and Olivia (again) had me completely hooked! The entire cast honey, but this one’s in particular were the standouts for me. And AS ALWAYS Sophie remains my all time favorite RUclips reactor, you can find reaction channels on every corner of this platform (I feel like many creators see it as just a way to gain traction rapidly), but just like anything in life, there is an art to it and there are always those who truly master it, Sophie is definitely on the top tier for me, aside from being technically great (there’s clearly love being put on the lighting, sound, decor etc), she also has the perfect inherent qualities of a great reactor in her personality: she’s extremely observant, truly curious and interested in what’s she’s watching and most important of all, she’s EXTREMELY emotionally intelligent, which is a quality surprisingly lacking in most reactors despite being essential to a good watching experience on our end as subscribers. Sophie has a huge emotional range and is genuinely capable of detecting, understanding and empathizing with a myriad of different feelings, characters and situations despite her own personal feelings about them, great work Shophie!

    Im soooo glad they included Cole's nickname "The Kingmaker"!!! Such a cool name, he gets it in the book because he is actually the one to convince Aegon to take the throne!
    The passage is cool so here it is : "horeover, the prince at first refused to be a part of his mother’s plans. “My sister is the heir, not me,” he says in Eustace’s account. “What sort of brother steals his sister’s birthright?” Only when Ser Criston convinced him that the princess must surely execute him and his brothers should she don the crown did Aegon waver. “Whilst any trueborn Targaryen yet lives, no Strong can ever hope to sit the Iron Throne,” Cole said. “Rhaenyra has no choice but to take your heads if she wishes her bastards to rule after her.” It was this, and only this, that persuaded Aegon to accept the crown that the small council was offering him, insists our gentle septon."

    09:12 Good question! Valyrian is a widely spoken language. All nine Free Cities of Essos speak a different dialect of the language, cuz they were somewhat like Valyrian provinces.
    But all of those are Low Valyrian. High Valyrian was the original version of the language. Thus why the Targaryens, true Valyrians, practice it. But a lot of learned people know it. Such as the Maesters... which brings us to the Grand Maester... 🤔 (sus-side-eye)

That's twice she's taken out another dragon with a sudden climb and chomp from cover, and it seems to work a treat. Unfortunately I've gotten some spoilers from book readers, I think things are about to get insanely messy. Aemond shot his shot tho at least this time it was intent to hit Aegon tho he can say otherwise. I think people forget it's different watching it from the ground at a distance, we saw it straight on cuz that's how it was shot but from different angles way below it may be harder for the people on the ground to view the intent. Cole probably knows tho because he knows Aemond especially after finding Aegon, I certainly think he intended on finishing the job with his sword.

      @@vbb2076 exactly and the way they are framing it is intentional in my opinion. Black Council are made to look like they don't make sense so Rhaenyra not listening to them is a "smart" move. but in green council, there's an entire scene glazing how smart the council is. Thus, Aegon not listening to them is a "dumb" move. They do a lot of parallels between Rhaenyra and Aegon which sometimes I do get and understand.
      But most of the time it so obvious that they are trying really hard to sell to the audience what to feel and who side with on certain situations.

There was no way to break apart the two dragons apart from fire too- now I’m not saying Aemond wasn’t getting payback 👀 But he still considers duty to the Targaryens. So idk if he’d finish him off. Alicent is a bad mother but imagine trying to raise children at age 15 while being married to an old man you don't love. Her motherhood is a reflection of Otto using her as a pawn and Alicent herself not having a living mother to provide an example. She loves her kids deeply (wanted to avenge Aemond by maiming another child and stood in front of a dragon when Rhaenys fucked up Aegon's coronation) but she's struggling to transcend the trauma inflicted upon her by Otto and Viserys. Unlike Rhaenyra, she didn't get to choose who to love or have children with.

    As far as I know, there's no restriction on anyone learning High Valerian. If you remember from Game Of Thrones, several mainstream languages in Essos are basically dialects of common Valerian and are sufficiently close to High Valerian that Dani could understand what the Unsullied's slavemaster was saying about her. In Westeros there's not much practical point in anyone learning it unless they're a scholar/maester who wants to read old Valerian texts. Targaryens use it as a kind of flex: it shows that you're sophisticated, well educated and connected to your ancient heritage. it's a bit like an upper-class Englishman casually slipping into French or Latin on the "assumption" that _of course_ you went to as good and expensive a school as he did, didn't you? 🙄

    The way this fight goes is the only way it COULD go. Rhaenys and Meleys had one job when they set out, rout Cole's army to prevent Rook's Rest from falling to the Blacks. Once Vhagar showed up, parameters changed, they could rout an army 100 times the size Cole currently leads, as long as Vhagar lives, Rook's Rest will fall. Objective changed to kill Aemond and/or Vhagar, at ALL costs, she CAN'T leave without ensuring at least one of them is dead, and once Vhagar injures Meleys, the only safe haven she has within a reasonable flying distance is Dragonstone, meaning she HAS to go over Rook's Rest for the shortest, and consequently fastest, trip; straight into Vhagar's waiting jaws.

    I really loved the contrast with Alicent and Aegon, and Rhaenyra and Jace, in this episode.
    Alicent was only 15/16 when she became a mother, and she only did so out of duty. We have seen how disinterested and trapped she feels in motherhood. Marriage and motherhood destroyed her friendship with Rhaenyra, the only relationship where we didn't see her display signs of anxiety.
    She isn't really allowed to see Aegon as just her child. He's a political decision that would have her go against her father's will, or go against the claim of her former best friend. Aegon is the result of the marital rapes that Alicent suffered out of duty. Alicent's relationship to Aegon is seeped in regrets and conflict and trauma. And Viserys seems to be a largely absent father, more a distant grandfather than an actual parent.
    Aegon grows up emotionally neglected from a very early age, and we see how he struggles with empathy as a result, and with regulating his emotions.
    Even if Alicent was more ready and willing to be a parent later in her life, the damage was already done; and neither her, nor her society, is well-equipped to understand or deal with that damage. I'm sure Alicent feels like a failure as a mother, but I think she also resents Aegon for "resisting" her attempts. She tries to guide him, but it's both too litlle too late, and not at all what he ever needed. Aegon can't listen and learn to make good decisions, because everythimg he does is to fill that gaping hope in his psyche that the neglect left him with. He wants to be consulted as king, because he wants to have worth and to matter, not because he has anything of substance to contribute. All he hears from Alicent's harsh counsel is that he is fundamentally worthless and unloved, as he has always felt; not that he is acting like an entitled brat despite having put in no effort whatsoever, and that he should value and learn from the talents of those around him to become more suited to be king, rather than disregard their counsel for his own impulses.
    Alicent is understandably frustrated with Aegon's lack of humility and wisdom in this situation (and no doubt frustrated that he takes for granted what she had to build up by proving herself despite being a woman), but it's the neglect of Viserys and Alicent that left Aegon too emotionally fragile and fractured to be humble and patient, to grow and learn from listening. Aegon is constantly seeking to either numb himself to the void inside, or to fill it with pleasures or validation. He cannot do what Alicent asks of him, so in desperation, he tries to win glory and prove his worth in a reckless way, to his own doom, and Sunfyre's.

    [34:42] "Why did it have to happen? Seriously!" [The following is a repost of a rant I made on this already.]
    "THIS is the failing of GoT writing. Emotional/relationship issues? Make sense. Political machinations? Make sense. Battle tactics? Cheap plot tricks to fʉkk with the viewer.
    Garbage. We saw it in GoT [spoiler]. Remember at Winterfell when they sent the entire Dothraki horde into the darkness to die for _no tactical reason whatsoever_ ? And you were in your chair yelling, "WHAT ARE YOU DOING THAT'S _STUPID_ !!!"?
    And in fights, ludicrous stuff happens, for plot finagling and to shock the audience. [spoiler] Where did Arya come from when she went for the night king? _WHERE_ ? It made NO sense. [spoiler] Remember when Euron's fleet was just around the corner so it could kill a remaining dragon with a surprise scorpion? Daenerys couldn't see the entire freakin' fleet from her altitude? Their fleet had no scouts? Huh?
    Now, we MUST have a dragon appear from nowhere to end favorite characters. It just has to happen. Why didn't Rhaenys retreat when Aemond went for Aegon instead of her? (Taunting the guy w/ the biggest dragon in the hoarhouse, not such a great idea was it Aegon? See, a LOGICAL emotional/political action.) Let him kill his brother, you ⇒ skedaddle. She's _experienced_ in combat, remember?
    No, inexplicably (stupid plot device), she turns back. So she does some damage to Vhagar (nice), and the fight breaks off when Vhagar hits the ground and knocks out Cole (nicer!). _NOW_ skedaddle. Get the heck out of Dodge. She _knows_ she cannot kill Vhagar. She knows she cannot stop the defeat of the castle. So what is the tactical advantage of turning back, _again_ ? There is none. It's stupid, and Rhaenys is anything but stupid.
    But the writers are.
    This episode was excellence beyond comprehension. Except for two things: sending one dragon, alone, and Rhaenys ending herself on purpose. No excuse for this.
    Did none of these writers see Top Gun? "Never leave your wingman!" ?!? How about, "Never enter combat without a wingman?" How about that? Stupid stupid stupid, an insult to the viewers, like [spoiler] Daenarys going Mad King. Stupid."
    [I only reposted here, because SoFie's analysis is always excellent, and I feel compelled to make this point about the repeated failures of excellent writers in this one area of GoT, for my own intellectual posterity. If you've played _any_ tactical or strategic video games, the dumbassery for cheap plot manipulation is apparent. But if you were trained as a tactical military pilot, it's just infuriating.
    Rhaenys _knew_ it was time to bug out, and report back with vital intel. The writers, not so much.]
