A little crazy to think about, doesn’t feel like 4 years ago at all. This was my first Le Mans as well and the pure emotion in everybody at Toyota’s face had me hooked ever since
I remember watching it. As the Toyota was coming out of the first chicane on the straight I noticed it was only doing 200kph and I couldn't understand why. Only after that the commentators slowly realized it themselves. I think that was the only time I've ever watched a race with my mouth open. I wasn't a Toyota fan but that race really hurt and I have never seen any race this heart braking.
That's Hugues de Chaunac. Boss of Oreca, he's one of the biggest figures in sportscar racing. He's seen it all and then some in racing, just goes to show what a shock this was, if it made him tear up.
I saw it live, i couldn't believe it. Such a deserving team, such a close race, finishing like this. Didn't buy it in the infamous Michel Vaillant movie, couldn't believe my eyes.
This is the most heartbreaking moment I have ever seen in motorsports, before this was Nigel Mansell pushing his Lotus before collapsing out of heat stroke, but this is at another level. Toyota was on course to an easy first win and a second for a Japanese manufacturer only to see it all vanish at the start of the last lap, unbelievable this is the stuff of movies..
For people that did not see this live bavk then and just tuned into endurance... This was a time when porsche and audi were dominating and toyota was kinda the third wheel of LMP1, this was supposed to be their grand win
You have plenty to choose from. 1997 Le Mans 24 hours, the factory Porsche GT1 burst into flames with 2 hours to go. In the 1990 race, a private owned team, the Brun Motorsport Porsche 962 lost oil, and destroyed its engine with 15 minutes to go. The 2002 race saw the Noel Del Nello Reynard 2KQ take the lead of the old LMP 675 class with 1 hour to go, after the leading WR 675 Peugeots rear suspension failed. Let's not forget the 2010 race when ALL THREE REMNADING HDI FAP DIESEL PEUGEOTS suffered engine failures throughout the morning.
And shocking. I remember watching this race and noticed something was amiss when #5 was just cruising down the Mulsanne Straight, barely touching 130mph. I knew something wasn’t right.
Its so intresting that Japanese manufacturers in racing are having problems, Especially Honda in formula 1 and toyota in lemans, just really curious about it
Dumb response from Matthew. Racing is not easy. Companies that pull out for years then come back have issues coming back. For Honda in F1 they had the idiotic token system for engine improvement and not enough time to develop the platform. Racing in any case is a difficult sport.
