That's the pencil that former Disney animator Glen Keane has been using, the Mitsubishi Uni. He describes drawing with it as being "like butter". You should consider sharing links to some of these pencils and other supplies, or maybe making a list.
@@aysenururlu7361 Chad animators of Old School "The 9 men of Animation" all used the standard Staedler B and HB pencil ; the one with yellow colour and red eraser in the rear
This pencil is so popular, that the wacom one drawing display's pen has its own version of this pencil as a wacom stylus that can be bought separately. And it looks really cool hahaha.
Nowadays, pencils can be used for animators doing rough animation on paper before scanning the drawings into the computer for digital cleanup & coloring.
Woah I recently went on a trip to Japan with some friends and on our trip I purchased a pack of these maroon Mitsubishi pencils from a novelty store in Osaka. Since then I’ve been using them nonstop as I learn how to draw, little did I know they had such a reputation! 😮 Great video btw!
I'm very familiar with the Mitsubishi design since I came into a whole lot of leftover Uni-Star stubs from the classroom as a kid. Recently rediscovered those and use them every now and then. I've actually have been using the harder grades of Ticonderoga pencils for illustration. The quality control is low so the wood chips away and the cores are off-center, but I like the lighter graphite blend and point retention, and they erase right away on smooth paper. Then to add detail I've been using a Pentel Orentz in 0.2mm, which is very, very tiny but really helps with getting technical detail. It's like adding a laser beam on top of my rough. Something I've been meaning to try is "test scoring" pencils from Musgrave and General's. These are designed for the form bubbles on mechanically scored tests, but pencil collectors sometimes call them "cheap Blackwings".
Great to hear the insight! I have a few go-to tools I use, but I always want to hear about new or different ones to try. It's always a process of elimination for what my kit has for sketching or finished works.
By the way, for those who aren't wandering, Uni competes with Mono and Hi-Uni competes with Mono 100. So if you favor Tombow's products over Mitsubishi's, you can use the Monos. Just note that the modern Monos are made in Vietnam with Japanese graphite. Unis are still made in Japan.
And the Blackwings that the Disney animators have been using were the original Eberhard Faber Blackwing 602. Palomino just put those there for marketing.
Ah that makes sense. I bought a pack of hi-uni and mono 100 in 2b because of this video. I preferred the feel of the mono pencils more but thought it was weird because (at the time) I thought they used materials from Vietnam. I also picked up a few blackwing pencils but they feel exactly the same as the Mitsubishi pencils. I gotta admit that the finishing on the blackwings are way nicer than any of the other pencils and the metal eraser holder is kinda cool. The eraser itself is terrible tho…
My pencil king is a simple Ticonderoga if im not looking for any specific graphite weight. Theyre just so smooth, comfortable and have great built in erasers. I collect older pencils too, i love 70s and 80s mechanical pencils, the Mitsubishi mechanical pencil looks so similar to them in design! I have a few different mitsubishi drawing pencils, the black ones were king in my art room in school.
Thank you for your very generous and informative videos. I've been trying to find an equivalent brush pencil for CSP, may I ask which one do you use, or is it custom.
Great video. I personally don't care about the pencil I use, I just use whatever I happen to have at the moment. By the way, I love the music you put in your videos, I would love to know the name of the artist that makes it.
I haven't properly drawn on paper in an eternity. Once I know the power of ctrl+z I haven't looked back. Lol Cool to see you touch on some the kit traditional animators use.
I love blackwing palomino but I agree with you: too expensive and the fact that at the end there's a rubber it's not that great because it destabilise the pencil. But it draws amazingly. I have a problem with the hardness of the pencil (H+) so if I need a hard pencil I use the blackwing and then for anything else that needs more line heaviness/smoothness/softness I switch to Mitsubishi Uni or B+ Staedler. But I kinda want to try the Tombow Mono now ahah
Would you mind making one of these for paper? I'd except studios to supply paper when you're operating physically but I wonder if you have any recommendations for animation paper.
Hello, do you have more information about the 7700 and the move to digital. "Two years ago" seems to lines up with late 2021, when mitsubishi stopped producing the 7700 for a while alltogether (the since beought back red and blue). 2022 and 2023 were almost exclusively digital (from looks) for most productions. From my perspective, this change seems on the same scale as the transition from Cel to Digital in 1999. From your perspective, how are studios dealing with the move to pentablet animation? Are any productions returning to traditional since with red and blue, they can now go back to standard production? Do animators still trust in mitsubishi? Has any studio found alternative colored pencils? I am aware this is different between individuals, as well as between productions, and that the situation is in development. I have been invested in this topic for a long time, I am curious what somebody in the industry (physically, as opposed to comissioned cuts on twitter) feels about these developments, and how the situation looks like from there.
Hi Dong, I really want to learn to sketch and draw, mainly moe anime characters. But at the moment I have 0 skill with the pencil. I can't even draw a circle or a straight line consistently. What would you recommend as first steps to get more comfortable with the pencil?
Not sure if that’s what you’re looking for, but when learning how to draw is very normal to practice drawing exercises like horizontal lines, vertical lines, etc. It greatly improves the control you have over the pen or pencil. Like this ones: ruclips.net/video/VN8SCDXvMK0/видео.htmlsi=BCL374Jt8h-uEBKP
When starting out what helped me improve was ghosting before I draw a line or circle and follow through without hesitating, avoiding chicken scratch. Try watching this Proko video: How to Draw Confident Lines, also Drawabox Lesson 1: The Principles of Markmaking, I think it'll be helpful to you.
Lots and lots of blind contour drawing as the warmup will do what you need, which is to draw the lines of subjects you actually want to study. The result of a blind contour is a motion, and the more closely your eye and hand worked together, the more the motion you made will look like the shape. So of course you get better with your lines by doing them.
Mitsubishi Uni products are great. The fineliners are the best in the market, with the best price. The general writing pencil is better than those premium Faber-Castells, imo.
It's insane how entertaining these videos are even though I haven't drawn anything in over a decade. And I've never been good at it either lol
Maybe it's a message that you shoud start O.o
Haven't draw anything in over a decade? Never been good? Weak. I Challenge you to draw 1 hour a day for the next 10 years.

Do you by any chance know what other Disney animators - such as Milt Kahl - may have used?

This feels like a 90's infomercial and I love it.

5:59 awe striking to see the color drafts done with a physical color pencil.
He’s back!

Nice work! Thanks for video!
Can you please prepare a video tutorial on off-peg inbetweening? On paper or digital -- no matters.
Thanks in advance!

I have the intrusive feeling of ctrl z switching to drawing on paper awhile after using a tablet, its a pretty funny feeling

What animation paper is typically used? There doesn't seem to be any brands.
I wondering what pencils they use.
How bout staedtler colour pencil are they useful for animation ?
Please make video on how we make anime drawing
Great pencil but I prefer the Tombow Mono 100. Either one are superlative, however.

2:37 my art shop as it and the cost lower than other pencil, the mono cost 1€/1$ and others cost 1,20€/1,20$ on amazon are over price for some reason.
Hi Mr Dong, can u make a tutorial how to animate stagger? Thanks!
I knew it will be Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.
THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH 🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤❤

Any thoughts on the UniStar? Does it have any significant difference?
hey can you give me some advice on how to keep my characters on model for animation

I always thought animators use mechanical pencils for constant thin lines but this surprised me

Hi dong
Hey, I buy my mechanical pencils from those guys
hi
yo I draw with those pencils
🤔 I'm surprised you're using a regular erasor and not a kneaded one.
kneaded is usually used for graphite or charcoal shadings.
anime-style is mostly linework and outlines
