"Over Engineered" == built better than the minimum, costs a bit more but pleasant to use compared to the 'basic' version
Though I agree the eraser one is a bit...odd. Maybe you have to use it to fully appreciate it (like finding really comfortable shoes).

Without that feature, either you need a cap (which requires a second hand to remove and hold on to and replace) or the eraser is always out, in which case you get oils from your skin on the eraser, and make it less effective.

Edit: JetPens first used a different title for this post which was, "Are Japanese mechanical pencils OVERENGINEERED?" Therefore, this was the context with which my original comment was made.
Japanese pencils and pens are never "over engineered". These features are incredible, and have been wonderfully engineered for many years. I opened my father's desk drawer (he passed in 2012), and discovered so many old Pentel's, Pilot's, UniBall's and Zebra's. I remember my dad being into pens, so it was cool to see all that those familiar brands.

And after thinking about it a little bit, there is 1 mechanical pencil that does something similar in the US, already.
It's those clear, full plastic ones that has the long eraser heads that are manually retractable.

Preventing the lead from breaking obviously reduces waste and prevents the annoying experience of having your lead snap, but I personally am terrified of lead breakage because of a freakish thing that happened to me in 10th grade. I was writing notes in a class and my lead snapped, and a piece about a third of a centimeter flew up off the paper and stuck on my eyeball. I couldn't close my eyelid without it rolling over the lead so the teacher sent me and a friend to the bathroom and I held my eye under the faucet for a while. When I brought my face back up, my friend said the lead was right on the corner of my eye, and she plucked it out with her nails.

i have the Orenznero; it is relatively expensive, but in the one year I had this pencil, I've never needed to add more lead because of how the lead never broke (think it came with 3 leads inside). The black body of the pencil looks and feels amazing, without the usual plasticky feel. The centre of gravity of the pencil is close to the tip, so it feels so easy to control. It requires a bit more force to write with, but after a while I got used to it. It is now one of 2 pencils I use, the other which is just a wooden pencil for shading. 10/10 would recommend

yes when working on a sketch with mechanical pencil I like to control my pencil orientation, but when you need to extend the lead you have to regrip the pencil and loose the orientation, the shaking allows you to extend the tip without regripping which is pretty nice.

The only one of these features I've used personally is the auto-rotating lead, and for technical illustration it's unimaginably useful. For 0.5mm lead you get a much finer point than you ever would otherwise, and you pretty much don't have to think about it. Normally I'd be trying to turn the entire pencil in order to keep the sharp point in a commanding position, but when the lead auto rotates you always have a fine conical point that gives you pretty much the finest line you could reasonable expect from the size of the lead you're using.

I'd like to comment on the rotation as an owner of a uni kuru toga. Before buying it, check how you write- i found that while writing, I was conditioned to automatically rotate the pen itself, rendering the kuru toga useless. If you, however, do clutch your pen and never rotate it for long periods of time, it will no doubt work great. Also, it does require some pressure to activate the mechanism. If you're a light writer, again, useless.
Shame for me because I absolutely love the idea and the engineering.

You can shake it to extend the lead, and the tip also has the retractable sleeve function on it. I've had it for over 15 years now and was surprised at the features since I'd never seen them before.
I think the only drawback is the eraser, but that's ok since i prefer not to use it. I use a Staedtler Mars plastic eraser. Those things are really good.

I used Pentel mechanical pencils (.3, .5 and .7mm) all through engineering school in the early 70's and in work in all the years afterward. I don't remember any "model" designation, but they were simple and straight forward. Rotating the pencil is now a long-established habit for me, but the auto-rotate feature would be nice with my now-aged hands!
The sliding (auto-retracting) lead guard (and eraser) would have been very much appreciated -- as would a clutch that would grip up until the final 0.5 mm of the lead was used.
I'd say these features are NOT over engineered or "gimmicks" but ARE significant assets!

I used to use a Kuru Toga all the time, actually. I find that it’s actually pretty good with both cursive and art despite what this video said, and that it actually works fantastically with colored leads, so if you’re the type of person who likes to play around with things like that for pencil art, it’s actually really good at keeping the line weight consistent. That said, in this modern age using paper alone is sort of dated, and while there might be some quality differences between using it vs a standard mechanical pencil, I often find that the final product isn’t something suited for paper anyway, weather the thing I’m working on is a paper about to be typed, an architectural drawing being translated into AutoCAD or Blender, or a more advanced digital piece.

Since 1998 I have been using mechanical pencils from Japan exclusively.
My favorite brand is Pentel, here the P200 series which is also used by the star architect Sir Norman Foster.
Next to it is a Pentel P225 in use.
I take notes and write a lot every day.
And: Since 1998, the mechanical pencils mentioned are in daily use and work perfectly. Japanese quality, after all.
Since I continue to observe the market, other models have also found their way to me, which I also use with great pleasure. Thus the Pentel Kerry, Uni-Ball Kuru-Toga, Pilot Dr. Shaker, etc.
I think the Japanese mechanical pencils are not overengineered.

For anyone who saw this and felt pencil envy, some happy information. The tactile feel of a pencil is greatly influenced by the lead hardness. All you can buy in most stores is hb hardness. But that's not all they make, and you can find the other harnesses at art stores. Try b or even 2b. Personally I don't like .5 mm. I used to, but now I take a lot more ownership of the page rather than trying to be economical with it. 0.7mm B leaves a bold stroke that feels satisfying to put down. And it doesn't cut the paper fibers hardly at all. I enjoy it.

I like this. I have a number of mechanical pencils, including from Pentel. The problem is that yes, the lead does break, and so you have to think about that when using them. The second annoying thing is that the eraser on most of them is what advances the lead. That is, you push on the end cap to advance the lead. Take the end cap off to use the eraser. But using the eraser often, from the pressure, advances the lead, and you also have to hope you don’t lose the end cap.
The result is that I don’t use these as often as I would like, and instead just use standard H pencils with an electric sharpener at hand. O,d fashioned, but when I’m trying to work quickly, it’s actually better. After all, old time drafting used pencils. I did that in high school back in the 1960s, so it’s not a stretch for me.
But these look interesting. I’m going to have to decide which one or two to try, as there are too many to buy one of each before deciding and buying a mess of them. The only confusing thing is the pricing. Honestly, I don’t want a pen with Japanese cartoons on it. Going to the site, it’s difficult to tell if the higher priced models are just because of licensing fees, or whether they’re also higher end models. I don’t care what they cost, but it’s really confusing.
What I do like about some of the ones I have is that they have a metal ring at the top with a small opening that you can rotate to see a number and letter inside. You can rotate it to show the lead hardness. That’s very useful as I use more than one type lead. It doesn’t look as though any of these have that, but I guess I’ll have to go to the site and spend more time than I’d like checking each feature.

Your comment made me reflect on my high school days (80's). We used mechanical pencils for drafting and were taught which lead thickness to use depending on the line we were drawing . That made me wonder how you controlled line thickness with a normal pencil when you took drafting in high school.

For the record, I exclusively write cursive and hugely prefer the Kuru Toga. It might not rotate to the sharp side during writing, but it beats the heck out of manually rotating after every word, as you have to do with every other pencil on the market. IMO it's the /best/ pencil for people who write cursive because of this. I never don't have one on me. Of course, it still can't hope to beat a good pen, but for quick and dirty notes, imo, no pencil on the market comes close.

No, it doesn't beat the heck out of anything. The Kura Toga is a piece of junk with a horrible grip. Stop being fooled by bad technology and buy a quality pencil. I have never, ever used a worse pencil for cursive than the Kura Toga, and I have seventy-two models of mechanical pencils, not counting all the models I've handed off to my grandkids. No pencil on the market comes close? If so, it's because all the others are so far out in front the Kura Toga is blinded by the dust.
Like most who who use pencil, I suspect you have very little exoperience with mechanical pencils, and don't spend a lot of time writing.

@@jamesaritchie1 I’ve tried a fair few, but definitely not that many. What’s your favorite?

A Japanese pencil is never over-engineered, nor is he under-engineered. He is engineered precisely as he means to.

This made me nostalgic. My teacher will reprimand any student who use pencil to write exam answer. People should be confident when writing using the Pen.

I have 2 Kuro Toga (rotating lead) and love them. I studied engineering.

The Uni Kuru Toga is by far the best mechanical pencil I have ever used. Also, as a lefty, it keeps the lead from breaking as I push across the page.

I would love to own all these pencils. There is no such thing as over engineered pencil. They are always under engineered and can be improved more

I used to use the kuru toga. Amazing eraser, never broke the lead, and it lasted insanely long. I was even using 5mm lead, not 7mm. I no longer go to school (graduated) but still have the pencil. The best pencil I've ever had.

It's junk, and lead does frequently break.
