    I am an architect, and the first thing I learned in university is that regular paper cutters are the best sharpeners for all kinds of pencils (given you don't mind putting the shavings in a dustbin afterward). The blades are also easy to break into sections to have a sharper edge or simply to replace the entire blade if needed.

I'm telling ya, having this sharpener is really great for people who wants to sharp a lot of pencils, and is lazy to throw the shades away.. Also, when the pencil is sharpened the right way and not too over sharpened, it stops in its way.. The only con about this masterpiece is that it's big.. so it can't be fit inside your regular pencil boxes or pouches.. Overall an amazing product.. It still works now even after more than 7 years..

    The KUM masterpiece is a must-have for graphite artists and painters. Classical technique tells us to hold the pencil like a lollipop, with the shaft under your palm, not over the crook of your thumb. We're taught to sharpen a long point by exposing an inch or more of the graphite by shaving with a razor blade, then sanding it to a taper. With the Masterpiece, you can expose as much graphite as you like with a simple twist, and no fear of a cut with a dirty razor blade.
    I myself have made sharpeners like this by cutting off part of the blade, but this one from KUM looks so much more professional and probably cuts more consistently. Will buy!

    Warning you ahead of time: I have 2 plastic based KUM two-step automatic pencil sharpeners fail on me from blick (ONE FROM BLACK WING AS WELL). The issue is with the plastic mold tha holds the blades. Due to Germany's energy crisis KUM uses plastic that melts at low temperatures. Thus with medium usage, the plastic the will begin to mold with the pencils preventing the blades from shaving the wood.

    • @pauljs75
      @pauljs75 Год назад +3

      Mine seems to be different. It has a metal block insert molded into the plastic, and the blades attach to that with screws. The only issue is that the plastic casing isn't all that great at containing the shavings as it's too small. Also the flex joint for the clear lid will break at some point over the years. Taping it back on works, but it's kind of meh. The two step sharpening does work great (worth the price in that regard - if not marked up), it's just the enclosure has more style than substance to it's design. Even if it's visually unique and fits the hand well, it has to be emptied after sharpening only one or two pencils which makes it impractical. The bare metal block version (also shown in the video) makes much more sense as it omits the nearly useless outer case.
      Also not saying you're wrong about the design of the plastic case one. It could be they've gotten cheaper over the years and quality crapped out, as mine was purchased some years ago.

    I'm an aeronautical engineer student and I always just used the desk sharpener to sharp my pencils before I was doing any work and then just used a thin blade to sharpen it as it gets dull to keep that same line width along the whole schematic

    Its pretty common for woodworkers to use planes to sharpen pencils, however they generally don't move the plane relative to the pencil, but keep the plane still, which is much easier and is similar to a real planing technique for shaping really small parts. Which i think would be a better design for this pencil sharpener and perhaps how its intended to be used. Generally in woodworking you keep either the workpiece or the plane still, its really hard to plane when neither are stationary. If you were to use this sharpener i would recommend holding the pencil firm with your nondominant hand at the edge of the table at like a 30º angle and sharpen from there. This is similar to the technique that Japanese woodworkers use when sawing wood with the grain without a vise.
    The Plane sharpener bares a striking resemblance to a real type of hand plane used by Luthiers (People who make Guitars and Violins). Luthiers use these small planes more as carving tools than jointery and flattening tools like most planes. Luthier planes can be held in your palm like this sharpener, while almost all other planes are held with two hands.

    I bought a T'GAAL specifically to sharpen little golf pencils. I have a ton of them but you need to sharpen then at a wide angle (short tip) to avoid cutting down the length.

    Im more of a pen guy so idk why this video held my attention for so long lol. When i use a pencil down in my shop for marking wood or whatever I use my dads old 30 year old wall mounted crank sharpener like the ones I used in grade school. Its got a rotating bezel for different pencil sizes and has 2 rotating cutters like a rotary burr or end mill used for metal work. Thing works like a champ still after all these years. I used to have one shaped like a yellow ball with a smiley face on it like the one Walmart used to have in the 90s.

    I have a Kum Long Point, both M+R long point sharpeners (brass, one step, I think they're called Pollux and Castor), recently got an Afmat manual desk sharpener, and have an iPoint electric one being delivered as we speak. Nothing beats the Afmat for long points which is why I ordered the iPoint for my more regular tips. The Afmat makes them so long they're uncomfortable for writing.

    Small size knife sharpening block. The ones used for camping. Strike your pencil at desired angle, try to be consistent, like a match. Do it over a trash can. Works for every kind of pencil and your EDC knife.

    I'm surprised that none of them used subscription system, where if you stopped paying the monthly $3 subscription, the thing just stopped working. And no Wi-fi connection for the company to track your pencil-sharpening activities which would also connect to a phone app which gives you tips on how to perform better pencil-sharpening... which for some reason asked for permission to access your contacts, files, camera, microphone, and permission to reset your phone to factory settings.

    I want someone to invent a sharpener with all the best features - made of metal, ratchets, has adjustable point angles, ergonomic shape, a leather or metal case for storing the sharpener + extra blades + small screwdriver (for changing blades), and uses razor blades (so no need to keep special blades on hand just for a pencil sharpener). It would last generations!

    imo the desk sharpener is the best kind to have at home, office, or as a teacher for the kids to use. it almost never breaks the leads and sharpens neatly no matter how shitty the pencil wood is. it aslo tells u when the pencil has been sharpened when there is no longer any resistance when operating it.
