I am very grateful for your channel. I want to learn 2D animation so I can do fan anime shorts and concept for an original story I'm working on, and this channel is a huge help. Keep up the good work!
I love these expressions! I think it's one of the things that make manga and anime iconic. And there can be so much nuance to them, too! For a great selection of these gag faces I would recommend reading Onimai manga.
I'm just beginning to learn animation and this is a very timely video. I've subscribed to help me along my journey! Thank you for sharing these animation videos! You are doing us all a great favor by sharing your insider and personal knowledge from the industry.
"Feel free to exaggerate" **Umakoshi intensifies** That said, thank you so much for making a vid on this! I was worried that gag faces always had to be on model but your video saved me lol
Amazing tutorial, love them Dong. Was wondering if it was possible to make a tutorial on what the separation lines in genga mean and what colors are used as well as one for Japanese timing charts and how to use them. Also some more Opentoonz tutorials as well since you are one of the people who got me into the software✨
The angry Manpu is supposed to be a pulsating vein. Originally and in more realistic mangas it was drawn on the temple or the neck of the character, where you actually have a vein that becomes visible under the skin when your blood pressure rises due to a huge effort or getting angry. In gag mangas though, this symbol migrated all over the place, particularly on the top the head as shown here (though evidently you normally can’t see a vein pulsating under your hair). Note that this manpu should normally only be used when the character looks calm. The moment you make the character visually angry, the manpu is redondant and unnecessary. One of my favorite gag variation of this manpu is when the character looks angry at first, take a deep breath to regain calm and then brushes the manpu away from his/her head.
Thanks for taking the time to make these quality videos bro. Been super helpful. Trying to make next year the year I apply somewhere. Yee haw! also, congrats on the channel growth. Its cool to see all the supporters ya got now
"Ghost from a mouth" symbol has a simple meaning. It just shows that a person has a deep sleep. 'cause according to Japanese belief, the soul leaves the body during a sleep through the mouth or the nose. And I wonder why didn't you show the "blood from a nose" symbol. : )))
thank you for all the informative videos! one thing I’ve been wondering about is how animators assimilate to the artstyle of the shows they work on. I wonder if you could explain how to follow and interpret the settei of a show and accurately draw the characters in your animation?
I'm just curious, how an animator can draw something that from not their art style? like every anime got their different art style so the animator is really need to quick adapt to the new art style in the short time?
It's because they have a Model Sheet so they can copy and look at it all the time for the characters so it won't go off model. Besides, it may happen of characters go off model, actually that happens a lot with young and new animators, but senior animators work on that and correct it afterwards
Uhh hi? I’ve got a question if you don’t mind answering please. Do you have to know Japanese to work in the Japanese Anime studio? I’m Japanese, but have no Japanese knowledge because I’ve lived in England my whole life. I’d like to either be a Mangaka, or an animator due to my art skills, so uhh…yeah. Also, Ik this isn’t relevant to this video, but when you’re making poses to animate, do you use a reference or something? What I mean by that, is a video that’s sort of slowed, that shows you the poses and frames and all. Or do you just…freestyle? Also, ANOTHER question. (sorry lol). i haven’t animated before (I mean, I’ve done it once or twice, but never…properly), so I’m sort of confused, but do you shorten the frames? What I mean by that is like..how many frames would you use for a head turn or something simple like that? Do you need to keep the frames simplified? Like…I’m not sure how to say it, but how are you too make a smooth animation if you use like…4 frames or something. Basically, how many frames is typically used to animate something ‘simple’ like a blink, or head turn. Or just how many frames is used in general. If you could answer these, then I’d be very appreciative :). Ofc u don’t have too bcs I know ur busy…probably….considering ur an animator but… Yeah. Ty.
I dont know if this channel has a video talking abt this already. But it would be very good to have one explaining the names keys have. I noticed in anime the keys are named in letters (, A1, A2, A3 or B1 and so on) in western we dont do that. So it confuses me a bit to understand what they this letter represent and how to do it right
I never realized these expressions had a name lol! Always learning from this channel 👍
Right?! When we were younger my brother and I used to call them "cartoon actings" 😅
Same
I didn't know there was a name for this even though it's so common, thank you for the lesson!
i really like making these expressions in my own animations.

Hi Mr Dong Chang, I was wondering if you have tried procreate dreams yet? I would love to know your opinions on it. Love the video btw!
08:06 wouldn't it be better to just draw the eyes and manpu on the B Layer then?
Hi dong, Can you please make a video about anime backgrounds, and thank you.
Great video!

Yoo, just a question. When animating Japanese anime style, do I use constant thickness on my brush or what do I do for smoothest fps.
Basically, draw Nichijou!
