Rotating shots in animations have always looked like black magic to me, especially when the background and the action match perfectly. I never thought to look it up but I'm glad I found this.
I’m an animation major from America and these videos are so helpful. Thank you very much.
what would you recommend me as someone trying to learn animation? something that was helpful to you, like an exercise, a source of information etc
How are you doing? I wanted to ask if you’re open for commissions on a small animation promo?
Are you able to pay rent with this career?
"Whoever will be in-betweening this scene has their work cut out for them"
he just yanked the words right out of my mouth lmao
Me: learning how to animate
Dong: casually pulls out an original anime that looks better than anything I can do in just 8 seconds.
That said I really appreciate all the work done, I had no idea this was how a rotating shot was done.
Wonderful video. That's way simpler than you would think. Thanks
The man who thought me how to use clip studio paint for aniamtion!
Your work blows me away. I love that you include the timing sheet instructions and explain everything so well. The part about shading the character yellow being a "Japanese thing" is also very true haha.
The color yellow has a specific reason. It is to indicate the main character in the sequence (A kind of animated storyboard) by highlighting it separately from the background. The yellow color indicates what is going to be animated in the frame for the sequence. (This is something that comes from cel animation when each frame was traced and colored by hand)
@@Nolroa Tha's fascinating! I never knew that. Thanks for pointing out the reason behind it :). I figured there was probably a method behind it but never heard the reasoning. Appreciate it!
I’ve recently seen your “how to animate a head turn” tutorial and tried it out for myself! These videos are fantastic, I really like how they’re made, every singole one of them is full of clear and useful information! Thank you!
For real, I really love and enjoy your content, pls keep it up!
You could use the Liquify Tool to correct proportions and position of details.
Awesome tuturial !! Thank you so much ! :) I'm from Madagascar by the way , may this useless information makes you realize that you inspire so many people ! keep up the good work ;)
This video is gold, man! There's a whole ton packed in 15 minutes. Awesome work!
Question: in anime, I've seen shots that rotate around buildings in a city (each frame is a different point perspective). I once did a point perspective city drawing and it was the most time consuming drawing project ever. So my question is: when a rotating city shot is shown in anime, do they have any tricks/shortcuts to create those? Or do they draw hundreds of city drawings each with slightly different perspective?
Also, I love your videos!! 💖 They always make me feel like my mind is opening up and understanding new things about animation!
If you know how to draw buildings from memory, you can draw them quicker.
But there are Tricks to do a massive rotating city shot without killing yourself:
1: Simplify the buildings in motion.
*People are biased,* so if you have a static shot of a detailed, painted background of a city followed in the next shot by rotating or panning around cubes with less detailed linework and simplified shading, People's minds will fill in the blank because they already recognize the moving shapes as buildings.
2: Parallax scrolling
This is when you take static images that aren't supposed to rotate and scroll them on different layers in space with different timing depending on their distance from the camera (The further back something is, the slower it moves) . You can actually add this to the first trick to include some more detailed and even painted buildings moving in the foreground of the shot. Not only does it generate depth, but if done with #1 it keeps the illusion of a moving, detailed cityscape.
3: Split the work between people
Lets say have a key animator put in the general shape and even some detail of the buildings but have a person or small team come in and detail them. This is a less common approach.
4: Use 3D, lol.
3d.
depends on the shot. Got any examples? Can explain how it's done if I see that.
U mean like the soul eater intro?
@@CorralSummer I can't remember where I've seen shots like I was describing. But picture if a camera drone circled a skyscraper from a distance while keeping the camera trained on the skyscraper the entire time. You get a spinning skyscraper at the center of the shot, and the rest of the buildings in the shot are all similarly changing perspective and "shape" as they are viewed from different angles.
I couldn't find a good example, but you can see a point perspective changing a little bit at 2:17 of this flying AMV

What does A1 End note mean on the screen next to the character?
is it possible to do the same background pan process in opentoonz?
what does the animation template do is it like a guide?
Bro did you work on any anime movie or series?
What pencil brush are you using?
It's just the default G-Pen from CSP
Fuck school, ima do it at home
She wanted to kill the camera man
😵
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but really curious about the rectangle on the page drawn with dotted and solid lines, how it is used?ヽ(´o`;
Well, actually, it comes with the template, so it's pretty much useless 😭
why do we call those clean line-drawing sheets "tie downs"? because the rough drawing sheets are drawn loosely so the fairly(cleanly) drawn sheets are tighten ones (tie downs) OR because during the traditional times the finalised sheets were tied down ( with a rope inside a file) and given to cleanup department ?
Can you explain what those damn red blue yellow or whatnot colored lines are specifically used for? :S
Red = Highlights or color separation. Blue = Shadow
Yeah
Blue outlines = Shadow
Red outlines = Highlights
And sometimes, animators fill in those line with those basic color codes :
Purple/pink = Hair Shadow
Yellow = Highlights
Green = Inside of the eyeliner
Lighter Blue = Skin/Clothes etc.
But it's very up to you and your fitting.
Honestly, I use pink for the accessories and orange for skin Shadow.
It's up to your choice to fill in with as many colors as you want to your own color and coloring spot choice.
Hi Dong Chang. How are you doing? I’m working on a few characters and wanted to ask if you’re open for commission on a small animation promo?
