I wish we could all just appreciate animation in general. I really love anime and it's been a huge part of my life, but I grew up watching Pixar and DreamWorks movies too. Both Western and Eastern animation are amazing in their own way.
Right? I don’t get why it always has to be a fight
i had a kid in my class try to talk about hwy anime movies are better than Western movies and i felt really annoyed because he wasn’t making any good points and also there shouldn’t even be a fight about it because where it comes from doesn’t make a difference.
@@zamnit It's a faze. I'm a old school anime fan that started watching it in the 90's and have since evolved into a general animation fan. In high-school and early college I went through that ANIME is better at everything faze. They just want to feel edgy and special and superior to other people in some small way.
I love all animation in general, if i had to pick a favorite would be stopmotion, no matther were it comes from. However, when its about content, I have to give more point to the japanese one because it dives in way more topics, themes, genres and for all ages. The western ones had opened a lot on those fronts, specially on the internet were you can find a lot of good shit, but on the main stream western animation they are either being pushed down by the Twitter and Tumblr dumbasses only members club, are too dumb, poorly made and rushed to be enjoyed, go the full adult edgy crap with no substance or its another copy cat of Disney or Dreamworks. The only interesing things that the western mainstream animation does comes from companies that are from animators that got sick and tired of Disney crap or got axed from there.

To be honest only drawing in anime style limits you as an artist. Learning classical art techniques and correct anatomy and perspective means you have a good base which you can stylize from
it’s not petty, its just how things are in higher levels of art school. anime isn’t *there* in most artist’s eyes compared to other more realistic styles

I'll try to explain why most profesor and art school despise anime/manga style
Anime and manga as artstyle is not wrong or bad but the very nature that its called a style mean its already a distillation/deconstruction of reality. If you only try to copy the artstyle without learning where it come from (reality), you end up with bad drawing. You only make the distillation of distillation, its like trying to photocopy a photocopy result. It won't retain nor convey the best information. The worst thing that happen is the style will limit you from exploring the different method of expressing what you envision. In the end the artstyle is a choice of solution and expression. Even among manga and anime there is different style and complexity.
So tldr; know the rule before you know when to break it.
This is the mistake that most people make thinking that anime is one art style when it can't be futher from the truth anime has many art styles that are very different from each other but many people are ignorant of that
@@juanmanikings Yeah but the average amateur western anime-drawer does the same old style over and over again
Art style is not the same as motion. I think what they mean is that japan tend to have limited motion.
@@juanmanikings Thats not what he's saying. Anime has different art styles, but the gist is that it almost always breaks the rules of realism and anatomy.
If you're gonna present anime as your style, you need to learn the basic fundamentals of anatomy and perspective first. Your art will suffer otherwise.
Thats why you see so many famous artists who has a popular style occasionally post hyper realistic, or out of place art pieces on their page. For practice.
@@disposablehero1235 Funny you say that, I think this is the first time I've ever heard someone say Japan has limited motion in their animation lmao

@Bvbs wtf is french manga? just call it a comic.
The worst is when they take western shows and appropriate them, don't consider them as part of the western animation landscape. Shows like Avatar, Teen Titans and Castlevania. Its animation equivalent of "these are not like the other girls".
All types animation is beautiful. From Akira, to stop motion animation from Laika to claymation from Aardman, to hand drawn French animation to love Ernest and Celestine, to Dreamwork's and Pixar's CGI films to Disney's classic 2D movies such as their masterpiece Sleeping Beauty.

The same thing happened when I was at college studying art. And I do agree with the tutor, first you must learn to draw real people, then draw cartoons and all that stuff. It's like drawing an apple as opposed to drawing a drawing of an apple.
I actually started getting into animation from 2D disney movies. Theyre sooooooo fluid, its like somethings ALWAYS moving. It was so good, u can tell the team really put effort into them. Then i found anime i was like WOAHH this is sick. I like both alot, both have ups and downs, neither is better
I think westerb cartoon has more fluid animation cuz most characters are simple and easier to animate while anime has more unique character style and more detailed, and probably cuz budget difference
@@code_flxc2231 not its not the design made an animation harder to animate. It is the choreography, in western animation you can't use to much static frame unlike anime. Yeah Western animation is simple in style because it is way harder to animate than in anime. In anime it is much stylize but you can cheat a lot, thats what separates anime style animation.
@@code_flxc2231 its not the budget, try to compare animated movies. Its the style.
the basics is tv animation: 12 frames per sec mayb even dropping down to 8fps or 6fps if bad quality show or used sparingly and strategically, disney/ghibli 2d animation: 24+ frames per second

You already finished making 10 episodes: Kalm
Its One Piece: Panik
It is still the same. I didn't really go to art school per-say but I studied concept art at a university in the UK.
One of the strong points at the uni is art as well as other things.
"Anime style" is still frowned upon to a degree.
Loved the video by the way
As someone who makes animation, I just like both styles for different reasons, If I was going to compare the styles western cartoons are a lot more smooth and elegent, while Japanese animation is a lot more aggressive and energeric, its completley different and their both good for what they do.I also just dont understand the stigma for the anime style you do realize that anime follows human anatomy a lot more closely than in western cartoons so for all I know anime is a lot harder to make than your typical western style, trust me I have an easier time drawing spongebob than naruto, not to diss western styles btw since they have their own way of standing out. Anyway I love both styles and I really want to incorporate a balance of both in my work.
anime characters almost all look the same. I disagree, as someone who also study animation western animation is more difficult to execute from technical standpoint. Western animation choreography is so hard to animate, most characters have their own physics and maximizes animation. Western animation always follow character based animation, where in even small scenes of like dialogue scenes is so rich in movements. Anime is great with force, but anime style animation uses a lot of animation cheating.
I just love how fucking passionate some scenes get when they really need to. Maybe it’s how the expression is conveyed or how the weight is animated. Japanese animation just feels right. Of course I can’t ignore the powerhouses of high art such as Arcane, Spiderverse and of the sorts. Western animation can be just as if not more passionate if the time comes.

Disney always used to have a mindset that there always has to be movement in every frame. And every frame must be slightly different and custom.
That’s the reason Walt Disney used to empty his personal bank account for every film he made (until he had fuck you money)
Before I’m corrected I know Prince of Egypt Is dreamworks, but the animators mostly were taught by Disney
And atlantis had amazing animation also, especially in body movement. Sooooo fluid. I wish studios would switch it up every know and then. Dont get rid of 3D COMPLETELY, but like make some good 2d movies sometime. Thats what i thought disney was going to do when princess and the frog came out of nowhere, but NOPE, back to 3D lol p
@@EyeZayUhArt that’s actually what they planned to do with princess and the frog, but the problem was that there weren’t many people at Disney who knew how to do 2D animation. When the film realised, The net loss of the film included opening a new modernised 2D animation studio, training multiple people to do 2D animation the Disney way and realising that drawing 60 frames per second for every scene for a film releasing in 4K with lots of detail would require a 7 year production cycle.
Meaning a CG animated film with the same story and a 1 and a half year production cycle could potentially gain more profit with the same box office.
(Tangled)
I am sad to see it go through.
(Fun fact, Moses parting the Dead Sea, was given its own floor and took two years to animate by hand, for a two minute scene!!!)
😂sorry this stuff just interest me
@@nathansteele4358 nah u and me both lol i love talking about this stuff. Lowkey they should take the anime route and animate on 2s at 24 frames a second. But i know disney is allll about the fluid and smoothness. They love animating on 1s lol but i think the industry is slowlyyy coming back to some type of 2d. Spiderverse did amazingly well, there was a 2d movie about wolves on apple tv that was realllyyy good and got nominated, forgot the name tho🤦🏽♂️. I think when they see other companies having success maybe theyll give it another shot, HOPEFULLY itll be really profitable so they can give us what we want🤣
@@EyeZayUhArt plus the rise of 2D cartoons on TV.
There was actually a rumour a while back that Disney were considering buying the Pokémon IP from Nintendo, covid definitely affected that decision ngl, but if they did, I can imagine they were prepared to launch their own version of the pokemon TV show in 2D (or launch a cinematic universe), so they might akready have plans to get on that bus in some way or another
i see that they are diferrent proposal while animes tends to be more serious and more dramatics american animated tends to be more comedy
Comedy and lazily flash animated unless it's a big budget cg movie which is till beholden to comedy even if it's for adults
@@pheunithpsychic-watertype9881 not necessarily
just watch bruce tiim's dcau, the avatar series, gargoyles, spawn are great series and are well idolized that are not comedies
finally,wait for too long
With the state of western animation right now, there are basically 3 types of people
a) People who are abandoning western animation and flocking to anime
b) People who are clinging onto nostalgia and enjoying the "classics" from the 80s to early 2010s
c) People who are rooting for Lackadaisy to trigger a golden era for independant animation
The DCAU, Gargoyles (and Disney in general before it became a corrupt shit-show), Avatar The Last Airbender, Animaniacs, The Iron Giant......Those were the pinnacle of western animation
Who is this guy?
Ken Arto he is a anime keyframer who worked on anime like MHA,food wars, and jujutsu kaisen
I like anime more then western animation but they got some decent shows like kora
Yeah but they are few and far between nowadays.
@@TheMaskman2005 yea
Hello again, quick question, would you get offended if someone calls anime a japanese cartoon?
@@ryanvasquez2914 yes, my love for cartoon has dimmed.
@@ryanvasquez2914 nah I wouldn’t care that much, but u should just call it anime bc some people get mad by it, and that’s what it’s called
The thing with western animation I feel is that it’s never used for anything other than children’s movies and adult comedies. There so much more potential for action series and stuff and I feel that’s why anime is gaining so much popularity in the west too. Westerners are seeing animation used for so much more in anime than what were used to seeing and we love every bit of it
(Never said western animation didn’t have good stuff tho)
There are tho
Like samurai jack and there are more but i dont watch al of them
Bro thats because you not looking right. I could name so many great animated series, the most recent one is soul. A contemplative and beautifully done movie about the meaning of life and the value of a human life.
Ahem...
Coraline
The Pied Piper
The Hunchback of Notre Dame
Im pretty sure those movies have some messed up subject matter.
@@cro-magnum7642 I never said there weren’t good ones with more mature themes but they are still made geared towards kids at the end of the day.
Spongebob Gravityfalls are the superior
I think there's a bit of prejudice against cartoons
many cartoons are not comedy
as
dcau( bruce tiim),gargoyles,exosquard,avatar series,principe dragon,transformers prime,samurai Jack,Young justice and syn biônic titans
many drawings are adults like
mtv animated, adult swim is fox animated sitcoim
It's even more serious adult cartoons like
dc animated movies, spawn, the maxx, eon flux, primal, arcane, invincible, scarverger king,x men 97,Pantheon,castrevania,love robots and death and samurai Jack 5 season
This is why kengan ashura is the best manga ever made.

One doesn't have hentai
There is actually a number of western hentais though, mostly about superheroes. Last one I saw was called "f*ck-ass"
